How to Fix a Gaming PC That Runs Hot or Loud

A step-by-step way to tell normal fan noise under game load from a real cooling problem, with separate laptop, OEM and DIY desktop paths.

Loud fans during a demanding game are often the cooling system doing its job: CPU and GPU load rise, temperatures follow, and fans speed up to move more air. Noise alone doesn’t prove a fault. What does point to a problem is noise paired with stutter, falling performance, shutdowns, a fan that is stopped when it should be spinning, or grinding and rattling sounds. This guide goes from free, reversible checks to repairs, with separate paths for laptops and prebuilt PCs versus self-built desktops.

Don’t diagnose from a single temperature number

There is no universal “normal” gaming temperature. Intel states that a single normal operating temperature can’t be quantified across processors, chassis, cooling designs and workloads. Ambient room temperature and fan-control settings matter too. A reading that is fine for one CPU or GPU in one chassis can be a concern in another. If you want to judge a number, look up the limit published by the maker of your exact CPU or graphics card. Don’t rely on a figure from a forum post.

Use these signals instead of a magic number:

  • Fans ramp up under load and settle back down after you quit the game: usually expected.
  • Fans run loudly at idle or with no demanding app open: investigate background load or airflow.
  • Frame rates drop or stutter after the first few minutes of play: possible thermal throttling.
  • The system shuts down or restarts on its own: stop and diagnose before playing more.
  • A fan is visibly damaged, not spinning when it should be, or makes abnormal mechanical noise: needs inspection or service.

Intel lists automatic shutdown, lower-than-expected CPU frequency, evidence of throttling, general slowness and excessive fan noise as overheating symptoms.

What thermal throttling is

Intel describes it this way: “Throttling is a mechanism in Intel® Processors to reduce the clock speed when the temperature in the system reaches above TJ Max (or Tcase).” It is a protective feature, not a fault in itself. If you see it regularly, though, the cooling system is not keeping up with your workload. Don’t try to disable thermal protection. Intel also cautions that changing clock frequency or voltage (overclocking or undervolting) can affect warranty, stability, security, performance and component life, so it isn’t a first-line fix.

Step 1: Check for unexpected load

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, then GPU and Memory.
  3. With the game closed, look for anything using far more than you expect. ASUS advises closing an abnormal process if it is safe to do so.

If the machine is loud and busy with nothing running, you have found something worth fixing before touching hardware. If load looks normal, continue.

Step 2: Restore airflow

Laptops

  • Use the laptop on a firm, flat surface. Beds, pillows and sofas can block the intake and exhaust openings.
  • Check where your model’s vents are (bottom, sides or rear differ by design) and keep them clear.
  • Mind the room. ASUS gives an operating ambient range of 5°C–35°C (41°F–95°F) for the products covered by its support guidance. Check your own manual, since other makers and models may state different limits.

Desktops

  • Keep the case out of enclosed cabinets and off soft surfaces, with space around the vents.
  • Look for cables or components blocking airflow.
  • Check that intake and exhaust fans are all spinning and pushing air in a coherent direction (typically front/bottom in, rear/top out).
  • As a diagnostic clue only, ASUS suggests that if removing the side panel noticeably changes temperatures, case or room heat may be involved. It points to an airflow problem but doesn’t prove one or serve as a permanent fix.

Step 3: Clean dust safely

Dust, hair and debris can clog vents and fans, reducing cooling and adding noise. Follow ASUS’s cautions:

ARCTIC P12 Pro PST - Powerful Premium Fan, 120 mm PWM Fan, 600-3000 RPM
  • HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
  • PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
  • PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
  • SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
  • NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds
  1. Shut down and unplug the device (and remove the battery only if your manufacturer’s instructions allow it).
  2. Use a commercially available compressed-air can, held upright and at a distance from the vent, not inverted.
  3. Do not use a powerful air compressor. Excessive pressure can damage fan blades.
  4. If there is heavy internal dust buildup, ASUS recommends contacting a service center rather than opening a laptop yourself.

Compressed air is a cleaning aid. It can’t repair a damaged fan or a failed cooling component.

Step 4: Check the fans and device software

  • Look and listen. Are fans blocked, visibly damaged or not turning? Graphics cards often have a zero-RPM mode at low temperatures, so a stopped GPU fan at idle is not automatically a failure. If it should be spinning under load and isn’t, ASUS advises service inspection.
  • Fan modes. Some ASUS models expose fan profiles through MyASUS or Armoury Crate. Other brands have their own utilities, and options vary by model. A quieter profile typically trades noise for heat.
  • Updates. ASUS says updating BIOS, Windows and drivers can improve stability and performance. Treat it as one diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cooling fix. Use the manufacturer’s official instructions, and avoid flashing firmware casually on a system that is already unstable or shutting down.

Step 5: Desktop DIY checks (self-built systems)

Intel’s boxed-processor guidance applies to self-built PCs using Intel boxed processors. For a prebuilt OEM desktop, contact the OEM instead. For a self-built machine, verify:

  • Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
  • Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
  • CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
  • The cooler supports your CPU socket and the processor’s cooling requirements.
  • It is mounted correctly: protective film removed from the base, fasteners secured evenly, appropriate thermal-interface material applied.
  • The CPU fan or the liquid-cooler pump and radiator fan leads are connected to the correct headers.
  • Fan inlets, chassis vents and cables aren’t obstructing airflow, and intake and exhaust are balanced.
  • If the problem started after a change (new part, new cooler, rerouted cables, settings), review or undo that change.

Replacing a CPU cooler only makes sense once these checks point to the cooler. Confirm socket support, case clearance, and fan or pump header compatibility first.

Laptops and OEM desktops

Laptops and prebuilt systems should follow the maker’s model-specific service guidance. Opening one can affect warranty, and the cooling assemblies vary widely. A laptop cooling pad is an optional accessory that ASUS ROG mentions among cooling tips. The sources reviewed give no comparative test results showing how much a pad or any particular cooler helps, so treat a pad as a modest extra, not a cure.

When to stop and get service

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if any of these apply after the checks above:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Shutdowns, throttling or noise persist once load and airflow are sorted.
  • A fan is damaged, not operating when it should be, or makes abnormal mechanical noises.
  • There is heavy internal dust you can’t safely clear.
  • The system is under warranty and the fix would involve opening it.

Start with the free checks (load, placement, vents, cautious dust removal, fan operation), then move to the desktop-specific cooler review or a service request. That order keeps you from spending money or voiding a warranty on a problem a clear vent would have solved.
