Some updates add features that can change gameplay performance or image quality, but only on supported console models and games. For example, Sony’s Power Saver feature can reduce performance in supported games, while upgraded PSSR targets image quality in supported PS5 Pro titles. Sony’s release notes are the best way to see what a particular update claims to change, but general notes about stability are not game-performance benchmarks.
What PS5 system software updates change
System software is the software that runs the console itself. Sony’s update notes have covered several kinds of changes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Security and maintenance: Sony may report security fixes or general improvements to system software performance and stability without describing a visible change in a particular game.
- Console features: Updates can add or adjust interface and communication features. Sony’s 26.06-14.00.00 notes, for example, mention a voice-chat speaker indicator and a Community Activity widget.
- Controller device software: Controller updates can be delivered with system software updates; Sony also provides a manual controller update path in console settings.
- Game-facing features: Features such as Power Saver or upgraded PSSR can affect supported games, subject to the game, console model and settings.
When checked, Sony’s US PS5 system software release notes listed version 26.06-14.10.00. Sony says that release made security fixes and improved system software performance and stability. Those are Sony’s qualitative notes, not independent measurements of frame rate, loading time or game performance. The live page may change, so check it for the current version and release details.
How a system update can affect a game
The effect depends on the PS5 model, the game’s support for the feature, the relevant setting and, sometimes, a separate game patch. These examples illustrate why an update does not have one universal performance effect.

Power Saver: lower performance in supported games
Sony’s Power Saver feature lets supported games scale back performance to reduce power consumption. Sony says this scaling does not apply when Power Saver is disabled or when a game does not support it; the option can be enabled or disabled for each supported game. Check the game’s settings and its support information rather than assuming the feature applies to every title. See Sony’s Power Saver instructions.
Upgraded PSSR: image-quality changes on PS5 Pro
Sony’s upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a rendering feature for supported PS5 Pro games, not a general upgrade for every PS5 or every game. Sony describes improvements to image stability and fine-detail clarity, with more consistent performance across supported titles. Support is title-specific; Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement names games including Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds and Crimson Desert.

Developers have also described their experience with the feature. Dom Matthews, studio head at Ninja Theory, said improved PSSR helped preserve the studio’s creative vision for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and singled out particle effects. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at Square Enix, said fine details such as character hair looked more naturally restored and image processing felt more stable. These are developers’ assessments of their games, not independent cross-game tests.
What a system update does not guarantee
A system software update does not automatically patch a particular game. Sony documents separate update paths for console software and games or apps. A game may need its own patch to support a new system feature, and a system update alone does not mean every title receives that support.

To update a game or app, start it to receive the newest available version, or highlight it, press the options button and select Check for Update. Sony’s game and app update instructions cover the separate process.
Likewise, Sony’s phrase “improved system software performance and stability” should not be read as a promise that every game will run faster or more smoothly. The release notes cited above provide no quantified game-performance result, such as a frame-rate or loading-time measurement. A specific feature may have documented effects, but that is different from a general benchmark.

Check the installed version and update normally
- To check the console version, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony says Up to date means the latest version is installed.
- To check for an update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The console displays Update Available when a newer version is available. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Menu labels and the latest available version can change with later releases. Sony’s system software page has current update information and instructions.
If a network update keeps failing
Sony provides an optional manual update route using a computer and a USB drive. Sony specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive and approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. A USB drive is needed only for this manual procedure, not for an ordinary online update.

- Turn off the PS5, then start it in Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the USB drive and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
If the console does not detect the file, check the folder names, filename, drive format and that you used Sony’s official update file. Do not use an unofficial file or method.
Safe Mode options and data consequences
Safe Mode includes different troubleshooting choices; they are not interchangeable. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes them as follows:
- Repair Console Storage: repairs storage without erasing data.
- Clear System Software Cache: may help with system feature issues or performance drops.
- Rebuild Database: scans the drive.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): deletes user data and removes the system software. Back up data and follow Sony’s instructions before using it.
Protect the console during an update
Use only Sony’s official update file and documented update methods. Do not turn off the console while installation is in progress, and avoid installing immediately before or after a power outage. Sony warns that unofficial files or methods may prevent normal operation and can affect warranty or repair service. See Sony’s update safety guidance.
