1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your DDR4 or DDR5 memory is running below the speed printed on its package, its advertised setting may be stored as an XMP or EXPO profile that has not been enabled. Select the compatible profile in your motherboard’s BIOS/UEFI, save, and reboot. The exact menu and whether the profile works depend on your memory kit, processor, motherboard and BIOS; applying it is memory overclocking, not a guaranteed setting.
What XMP and EXPO do
Memory normally starts at a standard setting supported by the platform. MSI notes that its default is the JEDEC speed supported by the chipset and processor until a factory-programmed profile is enabled (MSI’s XMP guidance). A kit’s advertised higher speed may therefore not be active after installation.

Intel XMP loads predefined memory profiles through BIOS or a supported tuning application; AMD EXPO means Extended Profiles for Overclocking. A profile can set memory speed, timings and voltage. It may exceed standard specifications, and the result is not guaranteed stable on every processor, board and memory combination. Intel classifies XMP as overclocking (Intel XMP overview).
Before enabling a profile
- Identify the motherboard or prebuilt PC model, processor, RAM generation, and exact memory-kit model. Check the system maker’s support information for memory-profile support.
- Check the motherboard’s memory compatibility list (often called the QVL) for your kit. ASUS recommends using memory on its QVL and advises checking supported DRAM compatibility (ASUS memory compatibility and frequency FAQ).
- Confirm which profile the kit actually provides and what your BIOS calls it. XMP and EXPO are profile technologies, not a promise that any kit will work at its rated profile on any platform. Board vendors may expose options under names such as DOCP or A-XMP; labels and cross-platform handling vary.
- Consider warranty terms for your exact processor and system. Intel warns that changing frequency or voltage beyond Intel specifications can affect processor warranty coverage, and its XMP documentation includes enabling XMP among overclocking examples (Intel XMP overview).
Enable XMP or EXPO in BIOS/UEFI
- Find the correct way into firmware. Restart the computer and use the key or procedure documented by the motherboard maker or PC manufacturer. Delete is one ASUS example, not a universal key; other manufacturers may use a different key or recovery/startup route (ASUS FAQ; MSI guidance).
- Open the memory or overclocking controls. Locate the profile selector. Depending on the system, it may be labelled XMP, EXPO, DOCP, A-XMP, or another vendor-specific name. ASUS documents an Ai Tweaker example; MSI’s AM5 manual lists an A-XMP/EXPO control. These examples are not a universal menu path (ASUS FAQ; MSI AM5 BIOS manual).
- Select the compatible profile. If more than one is offered, use the profile supported by your kit and platform. For the basic setup, do not change voltage or timings manually; follow the motherboard or OEM manual for the exact options.
- Save and reboot. Use the firmware’s save-and-exit control. The system may take longer than usual to start while it applies memory settings; allow the process to finish. The exact behavior varies by platform.
Confirm the memory is running at the expected rate
After restarting, check the memory speed in BIOS/UEFI or a suitable system-information utility. Compare the displayed value with the profile’s rated data rate, and check whether the utility reports clock frequency or effective transfer rate. DDR memory transfers data twice per clock cycle, so a physical clock reading can be about half the effective DDR data rate. Compare like units rather than treating those two readings as a mismatch. ASUS provides a separate post-enable frequency-check guide (ASUS memory frequency FAQ).

If the PC will not boot or becomes unstable
A profile can fail to train or cause errors when a particular CPU, motherboard, BIOS and memory kit combination cannot run it reliably. Do not assume every board will recover automatically.
- Use the motherboard or system maker’s documented BIOS-reset or CMOS-clear procedure. Follow the manual for your exact model; reset procedures differ.
- Return to default memory settings, then check the kit and platform compatibility information again.
- If the system boots at defaults but not with the profile, leave the profile disabled unless the manufacturer’s guidance gives you a safe, supported next step. ASUS lists troubleshooting guidance for failed memory-profile settings (ASUS memory FAQ).
Choosing between XMP and EXPO
Choose based on the profile stored on the memory kit and the support documented for your specific CPU, motherboard and BIOS—not on a blanket assumption that one label works only with one processor brand. Consult the board’s QVL and manual for the option exposed by your firmware. ASUS and MSI document their own naming and controls, while G.SKILL gives DOCP and A-XMP as vendor-specific examples (G.SKILL profile terminology; MSI AM5 BIOS manual). ASUS also cautions that its EXPO/optimized memory feature can configure elevated memory voltages and may not suit every kit or configuration (ASUS ROG X870E BIOS manual). A profile can enable the rated setting, but neither universal compatibility nor a particular performance gain is established for an individual system.
