GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and PS5 Pro, not PS4. You do not need a disc drive specifically for GTA VI: Rockstar says the boxed physical edition contains a download code and no game disc. Choose the drive based on your wider game and movie collection, not on GTA VI performance.

The short answer
If you are buying new, choose the PS5 Slim 1TB disc edition when the price difference from a digital model is small. It offers the current compact chassis, more listed internal storage than the original PS5 baseline and the flexibility to play physical PS5 and PS4 games, as well as Blu-ray and DVD media.
Choose the PS5 Slim Digital Edition if you buy everything from the PlayStation Store and want the lowest entry price. Sony lists that configuration with 825GB, and its optional removable drive can be added later. Buy an original standard PS5 only when a used or clearance unit is substantially cheaper; the official material available for GTA VI does not show a performance advantage for the original chassis.

Every version leaves a practical question unanswered: Rockstar has not announced GTA VI’s installation size or a Slim-versus-original frame-rate comparison. Do not choose a console on the assumption that one of these models will receive a special GTA VI performance mode.
GTA VI platform, date and compatibility
PS5 is the supported PlayStation generation
PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. The announcement does not list PS4. That means an original PS5, a PS5 Slim and a PS5 Pro are all in the current PlayStation family targeted for the game, while a PS4 cannot be used as a substitute.
Sony’s marketing for the game says the close partnership with Rockstar is intended to use PS5 features for an immersive single-player experience. It does not identify separate graphics settings, frame-rate targets or loading behavior for the Slim and the original PS5.

In listings, “standard PS5” may describe either the original large launch design or simply a console with a disc drive. For this comparison, the original model means the earlier, larger PS5 represented by Sony’s CFI-12XX disc manual. The Slim is the later, reduced-size redesign. Both remain PS5 consoles rather than different performance tiers.

What the PS5 Slim changes—and what it does not
Smaller chassis, same PS5 role
Sony describes the Slim as packing “the same features that make PS5 the best place to play” into a smaller form factor. Its product information reports a volume reduction of more than 30% and weight reductions of 18% and 24% versus prior models. The exact percentage depends on which earlier model and configuration is used as the comparison, so it should be read as Sony’s design-positioning claim rather than a promise about GTA VI frame rates.

The smaller enclosure is useful if your entertainment unit is crowded, if you move the console often or if you prefer the current design. It does not turn GTA VI into a higher-performance version of the game. Sony has not stated that the Slim receives a faster GPU, a higher frame-rate mode or exclusive visual effects for this title.
1TB Slim disc edition
Sony’s current disc-capable Slim listing specifies a 1TB SSD. Capacity shown on the box is not the amount available to games after system software reserves space, but the 1TB tier gives you more starting room than the 825GB figures published for the original CFI-12XX disc model and the listed Slim Digital Edition.
The built-in drive accepts PS5 and PS4 game discs and supports the console’s physical-media functions. You can still download GTA VI if you buy it digitally; choosing the disc model simply keeps more purchase and resale options open for other games.
825GB Slim Digital Edition
Sony also lists an 825GB Slim Digital Edition. It is designed for games purchased and downloaded through the PlayStation Store, so every title occupies internal or expanded storage and your ability to install depends on download bandwidth and available space.
The Slim Digital chassis can accept a compatible removable disc drive later. Sony’s accessory information says the drive requires an internet connection for pairing. That makes the Digital Edition a reasonable budget choice if you are committed to digital purchases today, but the eventual cost of the drive should be included if you think your physical-media needs may change.

What the original standard PS5 offers
Published hardware baseline
Sony’s CFI-12XXA disc manual lists 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a 10-TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU and an 825GB custom SSD. It gives approximate external dimensions of 390 × 104 × 260 millimetres. Those figures describe the earlier disc model and provide a useful reference for why it is physically larger than the Slim.

When an original PS5 is sensible
An original PS5 can be a good purchase when a reputable seller offers a clearly lower price, the console is in good condition and the warranty or return period is acceptable. Check that the controller, power cable and disc drive are included if the listing claims to be a complete disc bundle. Also verify the exact model number, because “standard PS5” listings can mix disc and digital versions.
Paying nearly the same price for an older, larger 825GB console makes less sense when a new Slim is available. The original’s only meaningful buying advantage in this comparison is a lower acquisition cost; no cited official source assigns it a GTA VI performance benefit.
Do you need a disc drive for GTA VI?
Rockstar’s boxed release uses a download code
Rockstar says the physical version of GTA VI will contain a download code inside the box and that a disc will not be included. The physical package is scheduled to be available from November 12 to support pre-loading, ahead of the game’s November 19 release. Because the code is redeemed online, a PS5 disc drive is not required specifically to play that boxed version.

You will still need an internet connection to redeem the code and download the game. Rockstar has not published the final download size in the cited official material, so do not buy a particular SSD capacity on the assumption that GTA VI will fit within a known number of gigabytes.
Reasons to choose a drive anyway
- Physical PS5 and PS4 games: A disc model lets you buy used games, borrow titles and resell them. A digital-only console cannot read those discs unless you add the compatible Slim drive.
- Movies: The drive supports Blu-ray and DVD media, which can matter if your console replaces a separate player.
- Household flexibility: A disc model accommodates both downloaded games and physical purchases, so another family member’s buying preference does not force a console change.
- Future uncertainty: If you are unsure whether your library will remain digital-only, paying for the drive up front avoids an accessory purchase and online pairing later.
If none of those cases applies, the Digital Edition is functionally sufficient for GTA VI. The game’s code-based physical package does not create a disc-only requirement.

What is known
The current Slim disc model is listed with 1TB, while Sony’s listed Slim Digital Edition and the original CFI-12XX manual use 825GB figures. The operating system reserves part of any drive, so the free space shown after setup will be lower than the advertised capacity.
What is not known
Neither Rockstar nor PlayStation has published GTA VI’s install-size requirement in the cited announcements. That missing figure affects how many other games you can keep installed, but it does not justify a made-up capacity recommendation. Wait for Rockstar’s system requirements or the PlayStation Store listing before treating a particular expansion size as necessary.

PS5 consoles support compatible M.2 NVMe SSD expansion. An added drive is a sensible follow-on for a multi-game library, especially if you buy the 825GB Digital Edition, but compatibility matters: the drive must meet Sony’s PS5 interface, size, heatsink and performance requirements at the time you purchase it.

Expansion is a library-management decision, not a GTA VI requirement established today. Do not pay for a specific capacity solely because a retailer or forum guesses the game’s size. Recheck Sony’s current compatibility guidance and Rockstar’s final installation information before ordering.

How to prepare whichever PS5 you buy
- Confirm the model: Check whether the listing is a Slim disc model, Slim Digital Edition or original CFI-12XX-style console. Do not rely on a seller’s use of “standard” alone.
- Check the included hardware: For a disc console, verify that the drive is present and functional. For a Slim Digital Edition, confirm whether the optional drive is included or sold separately.
- Plan network access: GTA VI’s announced physical package uses a download code, so allow for account redemption and a full game download. A disc drive will not remove that requirement.
- Leave storage headroom: Keep free space for the game, updates and temporary installation data. Rockstar has not yet supplied a final size, so avoid filling the SSD completely with older games.
- Update system software: Install the latest PS5 system update and game updates when GTA VI becomes available. This is standard preparation and does not imply a special Slim patch.
- Use an appropriate display: Sony documents PS5 support for 4K, HDR and high-frame-rate capabilities. A compatible 4K HDR display and suitable HDMI connection can help you use those console features, but no GTA VI-specific output mode has been announced.
Questions that remain unanswered
Will GTA VI run better on the original PS5?
There is no official evidence of that. The original and Slim are treated as the same PS5 target in the available PlayStation material, and neither Rockstar nor Sony has published a model-by-model frame-rate test. The original’s larger shell does not, by itself, establish faster rendering.
Will the Slim have a lower frame rate?
No official source cited for this comparison says that it will. The Slim is positioned as the same core PS5 experience in a smaller form factor. Until Rockstar publishes technical details, claims of a Slim penalty are speculation.
How large will GTA VI be?
The final install size is not stated in the cited official material. Treat retailer estimates and unofficial screenshots as unconfirmed until Rockstar or PlayStation publishes the requirement.
Can a PS4 run GTA VI?
PlayStation’s announced platforms are PS5 and PS5 Pro. PS4 is not listed.
Is the original PS5 discontinued or unsupported?
The available information does not say that the original PS5 is unsupported. It remains a PS5 console, and the GTA VI announcement targets PS5. The practical difference for a buyer is age, size, storage tier and condition—not a documented exclusion from the game.
