A PS5 Slim fan that briefly speeds up during a demanding game or app may be behaving normally: Sony says the fan can temporarily run faster to cool the system. If the console shows a high-temperature notification, however, turn it off and let it cool before using it again. Start with ventilation and dust checks; contact PlayStation Support if the warning or unusual noise persists.
First, distinguish a temporary fan surge from an overheating warning
A short increase in fan noise during some games and applications is not, by itself, proof of a fault. Sony describes temporary faster fan operation in those conditions as normal, because the system is cooling itself. That explanation applies to a temporary increase—not persistent or escalating noise, or noise accompanied by a temperature warning. Sony’s ventilation and noise guidance does not establish a diagnosis from sound alone.

If a high-temperature notification appears, treat it as a stop signal rather than continuing to play while you troubleshoot. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 Slim manual warns that continued use while the message is displayed may make the console non-operational. Read the CFI-21XX instruction manual.

Check the PS5 Slim’s placement and airflow
- Turn the console off before inspecting or cleaning it. Do not handle cables or remove a cover while it is running.
- Clear the side and rear vents. Make sure objects, walls, or other equipment are not blocking airflow.
- Give the console room to breathe. Sony recommends at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Move it out of a cramped space or closed cabinet, and away from locations where heat builds up.
- Avoid long-fibre carpet or rugs. Place the console on a firm surface rather than a long-fibre floor covering.
These are ventilation checks, not a guarantee that a persistent overheating problem will be fixed. Sony’s ventilation guidance covers placement and airflow recommendations.

Remove dust safely
If you can see dust accumulating around the vents, shut down the console and disconnect its AC power cable from the console before cleaning. Sony recommends using a low-powered vacuum to remove dust in and around the vents. A low-powered vacuum is optional; the guidance does not call for a PS5-specific cleaning device.
Do not use the console without its covers as a troubleshooting measure. The Slim manual cautions against operating it without the cover. If cover removal is needed, follow the manual’s instructions to power off, unplug cables, and let the console cool first. The external vent-cleaning step does not establish that an internal fault has been repaired.

If a high-temperature notification appeared
- Turn off the PS5 Slim and wait for it to cool. Do not continue using it while the notification is displayed.
- Move it to a cooler, well-ventilated location. Check that the side and rear vents are clear and that the console is not in a cramped or heat-retaining spot.
- If you installed an M.2 SSD, check its heat-dissipation parts. The Slim manual advises checking that these parts have not detached.
- Try again only after the console has cooled and the obstruction or placement issue is addressed. If the warning returns, stop using it and seek PlayStation support.
The manual’s warning applies to the CFI-21XX PS5 Slim. Do not infer a PS5 Slim overheating state from a red pulsing indicator described for PS4: Sony’s indicator page places that description under its PS4 section. See Sony’s power-indicator guidance.
