QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling library for the standard PS5; PSSR is the upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. They are related approaches to improving image detail, but they are not the same feature offered identically on both consoles. Sony describes QSSR as a faster, streamlined tier, while calling PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. Its public announcements do not provide a controlled numerical comparison showing which produces better results in a matched game.

Sony introduced QSSR as a performance-oriented library stemming from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Its stated design choices—a streamlined neural network and hand-tuning—are intended to make AI-guided upscaling fit the standard PS5. Those descriptions explain the design goal, not measured performance gains.

What each upscaler does
QSSR on standard PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony says it analyzes game images to improve image detail and stability on standard PS5. The company and developers describe benefits such as pixel-level clarity and temporal stability, but those are qualitative descriptions, not a published resolution increase, frame-rate gain or percentage improvement. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement gives the rationale and initial game support.
PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as the PS5 Pro’s upscaling technology and says it uses AI to analyze images pixel by pixel, with the aim of producing more detail and stability than conventional approaches. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro overview describes enhanced clarity in fine details such as hair and cloth and lists games supporting Enhanced PSSR.

Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version in February 2026. Its announcement named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using that version and reported that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles by that date. That adoption figure is not a benchmark and does not compare PSSR with QSSR.
Which games support QSSR or upgraded PSSR?
QSSR games
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles in its October 2026 announcement, saying both were being patched to add QSSR as an additional graphics option. The option may depend on the game’s patch state, so check the specific title’s current notes or graphics menu rather than assuming support is present in every installation.
Enhanced PSSR games
The upgraded PSSR version debuted in Resident Evil Requiem. In March 2026, Sony also described an optional PS5 Pro system setting, “Enhance PSSR Image Quality,” for applying the newer PSSR to games that already supported PSSR. Sony cautioned that the result can vary by title and that players can switch the setting off if visual effects are unexpected. Details of that rollout are in Sony’s March 2026 announcement.

For a current supported-game list, consult the live PS5 Pro page; Sony’s list can change as games and updates are added. Support for PSSR or its newer version is title-specific, not a promise that every PS5 Pro game will use it.

The available official material does not establish a universal winner. Sony’s statement that PSSR remains the “gold standard” and that QSSR brings notable improvements to standard PS5 describes the company’s positioning; it is not a matched head-to-head test. A meaningful comparison would need the same game, comparable output settings and display conditions, and measurements of image quality and performance. The cited announcements do not provide that comparison.
It also matters which PSSR version and game are being discussed: Sony announced an upgraded version in 2026, and the newer system setting applies only to eligible PSSR-supported games. Treat claims about visual differences as game- and implementation-specific unless they are backed by a direct test.
Quick Recap
What to check on your console
- On standard PS5: Check the game’s patch notes and graphics options for QSSR; it is a title-level option, not a universal system feature.
- On PS5 Pro: Check whether the game supports PSSR, then consult the game’s settings and current PlayStation guidance for availability of the newer PSSR option.
- If a visual effect looks wrong: For the optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting, Sony says results vary by title and the setting can be switched off.
