Dengue is assessed with a clinical evaluation and, when appropriate, laboratory testing; symptoms alone cannot reliably confirm it. Treatment is supportive because there is no specific dengue cure. Severe warning signs require immediate medical attention.
When to seek urgent care
Get medical care immediately if someone with possible dengue develops any of these warning signs identified by the World Health Organization (WHO):

- Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
- Rapid breathing
- Bleeding from the gums or nose, or blood in vomit or stool

How is dengue diagnosed?
A health professional considers the person’s symptoms, illness timeline, clinical findings, and local disease patterns, and may order laboratory tests. Clinical diagnosis alone is insufficient: dengue’s febrile phase can resemble malaria, chikungunya, Zika, and other illnesses. Testing can help distinguish these causes and guide care.

WHO’s interim laboratory guidance, published on 28 April 2025, says there is no single diagnostic algorithm that applies everywhere. Test selection depends on factors such as how long the person has been ill, the sample available, local laboratory capacity and disease prevalence, possible co-infections, prior dengue or other orthoflavivirus exposure, and vaccination status.
What test can detect dengue?
WHO identifies nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) among the available test categories. The approach depends in part on the stage of illness; no one test should be treated as universally best.

During the first week of illness
Direct detection methods may include molecular tests that detect viral nucleic acid, antigen tests, or virus isolation. Which method is suitable depends on the clinical and laboratory context. A health professional should interpret the result alongside the person’s symptoms and timing.
Later in the acute phase
Antibody testing, including some ELISAs, may be useful toward the end of the acute phase. The timing of antibody development and a person’s prior exposure can affect how results are interpreted, so testing decisions belong with a clinician.

How is dengue treated?
WHO says there is no specific treatment for dengue. Care is supportive and guided by clinical assessment and monitoring. A clinician decides what care is appropriate for the person’s condition and whether outpatient or hospital care is needed; WHO’s 2025 clinical guideline covers both settings for suspected or confirmed arboviral disease.
Pain relief and medicines to avoid
WHO says paracetamol (also called acetaminophen) may be used to manage pain. It advises against aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen because they can increase bleeding risk. These medicines do not treat the dengue infection itself. Ask a health professional or pharmacist what is appropriate, especially for a child, someone who is pregnant, or a person with other medical conditions or medicines.
