If Wi-Fi, the display, or suspend stopped working after an Ubuntu release upgrade, first identify your Ubuntu release, hardware model, and kernel, then check whether the computer still needs a restart. Work through the affected symptom rather than reinstalling drivers across the board: radio, driver, network, graphics, and resume failures have different causes. The timing may be a clue, but it does not by itself prove the upgrade caused a particular driver fault.
First, identify your Ubuntu release and upgrade state
Record the Ubuntu release from the system’s About page, your computer or adapter model, and the kernel version. Open Terminal and run:

uname -rAlso check whether Ubuntu is asking you to restart. A restart after an upgrade can matter, particularly when diagnosing suspend or resume behavior. Ubuntu’s upgrade guidance covers supported upgrade paths, preparation, restarting, and checking the upgraded system. It notes that third-party repositories and PPAs may be disabled during a release upgrade.

If the upgrade was interrupted
If power loss interrupted the upgrade, Ubuntu’s upgrade guidance says to try booting again. If packages were left unpacked or dependencies need repair, it documents these commands:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken installThese are recovery steps for an interrupted or incomplete package upgrade, not general fixes for a Wi-Fi, graphics, or suspend problem on a system whose upgrade completed.
Wi-Fi stopped working after the upgrade
Diagnose wireless in layers: confirm the radio is enabled, see whether Ubuntu detects the adapter and has a driver bound to it, check the connection to the access point, and only then investigate internet access. Ubuntu’s Wireless network troubleshooter provides desktop-oriented checks.

1. Check the radio and adapter state
- Make sure Wi-Fi is switched on in Ubuntu and airplane mode is off.
- Check for a physical wireless switch or function-key control, if your computer has one.
- If the adapter is removable, reseat it.
- In Terminal, run
nmcli deviceto inspect the network-device state.
If a community troubleshooting check reports Hard blocked: yes in rfkill list, look for a physical switch or a wireless setting in firmware/BIOS. Treat that older community guidance as a secondary check; prefer the current desktop help and documentation for your Ubuntu release.
2. Check whether Ubuntu detects the adapter and its driver
If the radio is on but there is no usable Wi-Fi interface, establish whether Ubuntu recognizes the adapter and which driver is loaded. Ubuntu’s wireless hardware troubleshooting guidance explains how to identify the adapter and check its driver. Some hardware requires a restricted or binary driver that may not be installed by default; use the driver guidance for the exact hardware and release rather than assuming all adapters use the same driver.
A Windows driver is not natively interchangeable with a Linux driver. Avoid installing one as if it were a standard Ubuntu wireless fix.

3. Separate a Wi-Fi connection from internet access
If Ubuntu says the computer is connected to the router but websites and other internet services do not work, the wireless link may be functioning. Check the router and internet service provider rather than treating this symptom as proof that the wireless driver is missing.

If the built-in adapter remains unusable after checking the radio, detection, and driver, a different Wi-Fi adapter may be an option. Before buying, verify the exact chipset, a confirmed Linux driver, and compatibility with your Ubuntu release and kernel. A product listing that does not identify its chipset is not enough to establish compatibility; no particular adapter model can be recommended without that evidence.
Graphics problems after an Ubuntu upgrade
Pin down what “graphics problem” means before changing drivers: is the screen black, distorted, stuck at low resolution, or affected only after the computer resumes from suspend? These symptoms do not necessarily share a cause or fix.

Check the release notes for your exact Ubuntu version and gather the GPU model, driver source, Ubuntu release and kernel, and desktop session details before changing graphics software. Ubuntu’s Screen problems help page covers display troubleshooting.
For example, Ubuntu 24.04 release notes document issues involving Intel Wi-Fi firmware, suspend with a particular MediaTek driver family, and graphics behavior under particular virtual-machine or display configurations. Those examples apply to the stated release and configurations; they are not evidence that another machine or Ubuntu release has the same problem.

First identify the GPU, the installed driver and where it came from, the Ubuntu release, and the session or display configuration involved. A broad driver change can obscure the original symptom without addressing its cause.

Ubuntu will not wake from suspend, or will not suspend
First check whether Ubuntu is still asking for a restart after the update. If the computer enters suspend but fails to wake, Ubuntu’s kernel debugging guidance points to a common diagnostic direction: “Usually problems occur when resuming, and normally the culprit is a device driver that does not recover from a powered down state.” — Ubuntu Wiki, DebuggingKernelSuspend. This describes a common failure pattern, not proof of which device is responsible on your computer.
Collect useful system details and follow the current Ubuntu kernel suspend debugging guide, including its advice on gathering dmesg output. The relevant device and failure remain specific to the machine. Avoid advanced tracing unless you understand the risks and have a way to recover the system.
If the computer will not enter suspend at all, note that separately from a machine that suspends but will not resume. Record when the failure occurs and any visible message; a failure to enter a low-power state is not the same symptom as a driver failing to recover afterward. - Ubuntu release and kernel version.
- Computer model, Wi-Fi adapter model or chipset, and GPU model.
- Whether Ubuntu detects the Wi-Fi adapter and which driver is loaded.
- Whether Wi-Fi is disconnected from the router or connected to the router without internet access.
- For display problems, whether the screen is black, distorted, low-resolution, or affected only after resume.
- For power problems, whether the computer fails to suspend or suspends but does not wake.
- Whether the upgrade completed and whether a restart is pending.
These details help distinguish a release-specific issue from a device, driver, connection, or resume problem and make it less likely that a speculative reinstall will make diagnosis harder.
