QSSR is an upscaling option, not native-resolution rendering. Sony says its new PS5 feature improves image detail and stability, and early observations report visible gains in two games—but the results vary by title. The available evidence does not establish that QSSR matches native resolution in every scene or quantify a general frame-rate cost.
What QSSR is—and what “native resolution” means
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling library for PS5. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, describing it as a streamlined neural-network performance tier derived from its PSSR work and hand-tuned for PS5. Sony also links its development to Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s announcement says the intended benefits are improved image detail and image stability.

Native resolution means a game renders at the output resolution rather than reconstructing an image from a lower-resolution internal render. QSSR reconstructs or upscales the image, so a sharp-looking QSSR output is not, by itself, evidence of native rendering. To compare the two fairly, you need to know the game’s internal render resolution, output resolution, mode and test conditions—not just inspect a still image.
QSSR is related to, but should not be treated as identical to, PSSR. Sony’s separate PSSR technical explanation describes reconstruction inputs including motion, depth, exposure and sub-pixel sampling. That provides context for Sony’s reconstruction technology, but it is not a complete technical specification for QSSR on PS5.

What the first game-specific comparisons show
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR, as an additional graphics option in each. Sony says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that is not a promise that every game will implement it.
Early coverage of Digital Foundry’s hands-on analysis described better temporal stability, finer detail and sub-pixel integrity, and fewer artifacts in moving foliage. It reported a more pronounced improvement in Marvel’s Wolverine and a less dramatic one in Ghost of Yōtei. These are qualitative, game-specific observations—not a controlled numerical benchmark or a guarantee for other games. TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report relays those findings.

QSSR vs. native resolution: what can be concluded
| Question | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Can QSSR improve perceived image quality? | Early observations report better detail and temporal stability in the two named games, with a stronger visible change in Marvel’s Wolverine. The report is qualitative, not a numerical image-quality measurement. |
| Does QSSR equal native resolution? | Not established. QSSR is an upscaling path, and the cited sources do not demonstrate universal equivalence to native rendering. |
| Does QSSR reduce frame rate? | No general cost is established. The cited sources do not provide matched QSSR-on/off frame-rate or frame-time results. |
| What resolutions does it use? | The cited sources do not give a complete matched set of internal and output resolutions for QSSR and native modes in both games. |
So, “Does QSSR look as good as native 4K?” has no universal yes-or-no answer in the available evidence. QSSR may make a game look clearer or more stable, but that does not establish native 4K rendering or prove equal results in every scene. A meaningful comparison must identify the game, patch, graphics mode, console, display/output resolution and test scene.

How to judge QSSR in a particular game
If a game offers QSSR alongside other graphics options, compare the same scene and mode, ideally with the same console, patch and display settings. Look beyond a stationary screenshot:

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
- Resolution: Check independently measured internal render resolution and output resolution, if available.
- Fine detail: Inspect edges and small features, including hair, foliage, thin geometry and particles.
- Stability in motion: Watch for shimmer, ghosting or sub-pixel detail that changes as the camera moves.
- Performance: Compare frame rate and frame-time behavior against the game’s stated target, using a source that reports its methods.
Without those details, a visual impression can still be useful, but it should be described as a result for that game and scene—not as proof that QSSR always beats, matches or costs performance against native rendering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why PSSR results are useful context, not a QSSR benchmark
Sony’s March 2026 PSSR update for PS5 Pro says results can vary by title and that users can turn PSSR off if unexpected visual effects occur. That is useful context for understanding that reconstruction quality can depend on implementation. It does not measure QSSR’s performance on PS5. Sony’s update concerns PSSR on PS5 Pro, so it should not be used to infer a QSSR frame-rate penalty or a base-PS5 result.
