PS5 QSSR Upscaling Problems: Fixing Visual Artifacts and Performance Issues

QSSR’s visual gains and performance effects vary by game and graphics mode. Learn how to compare settings and separate rendering artifacts from HDMI output problems.

If QSSR makes a PS5 game look unstable or run differently, first check whether the symptom is a rendering artifact or a problem with the HDMI signal. QSSR is an optional, game-specific graphics setting—not a universal PS5 switch—and its visual and performance effects vary by title and graphics mode.

What QSSR is—and which PS5 games support it

Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026. It is an AI-guided upscaling option designed for PS5, using a streamlined neural network and a hand-tuned implementation. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first supported games; both received patches that day, and QSSR was added as a graphics option in each.

Support depends on the game and its patch. Sony has not published a complete future compatibility list or rollout schedule, so check the current patch notes and graphics options for the specific title. If a game does not offer QSSR, its visual artifacts should not be attributed to QSSR.

QSSR is not the same control as PS5 Pro PSSR. Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier in its upscaling work while retaining PSSR as the Pro’s higher-end option. The PlayStation support setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” is available only on CFI-7000 model-group consoles; it is not a base-PS5 QSSR switch.

How to tell a QSSR artifact from a display problem

Rendering artifacts are part of the game image: for example, fine details that shimmer, flicker, or change as the camera moves. Screen-wide flicker, brief blanking, or an incorrect resolution or refresh-rate signal points instead toward the console-to-display connection or output settings. These symptoms can look similar, but the distinction matters: Sony’s HDMI guidance addresses output problems, not QSSR reconstruction artifacts.

  • Look for a scene-specific effect: note whether the shimmer or instability follows fine details or moving objects, such as foliage, and whether it changes when the game’s QSSR option changes.
  • Look for a signal-wide effect: if the whole screen flickers, blanks, or reports an unexpected signal format, investigate HDMI and display compatibility first.
  • Compare like with like: when the game allows it, compare QSSR on and off in the same scene, with the same camera movement, graphics mode, and display settings. Check fine-detail clarity, stability during motion, frame pacing, and output resolution separately.

What reported QSSR comparisons show

Early independent observations are limited to particular games, modes, and scenes. TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report of Digital Foundry’s comparisons described substantially improved temporal stability and fine detail in Marvel’s Wolverine, with moving-foliage artifacts much reduced. The report characterized the improvement in Ghost of Yōtei as less dramatic because its image was already strong. These observations do not establish that QSSR removes every artifact in every game.

Performance also depends on the graphics mode and workload. In an uncapped Wolverine Performance Mode cutscene, Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter reported an approximately 8–10 frames-per-second drop with QSSR enabled and estimated a frame-time cost of 1.5–1.8 ms. Those figures apply to that reported comparison, not to all QSSR games or modes. Leadbetter said performance was practically identical in 60 fps modes using dynamic resolution scaling, where the game could lower internal resolution while maintaining frame rate. The same report described only slight dips in one Ghost of Yōtei uncapped VRR/120 Hz Performance Mode test.

Sony and the developers describe QSSR’s intended image benefits, but those statements are not independent measurements. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine detail with greater temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. Treat these as developer perspectives alongside the limited, scene-specific comparisons.

Troubleshoot QSSR visual artifacts or performance changes

  1. Confirm the title and patch. Check that the game is one of the supported titles and has the relevant update installed. Open its graphics options and confirm whether QSSR is available and enabled.
  2. Make a controlled comparison. If the game exposes a QSSR on/off choice, revisit the same scene and camera movement with the same mode and display settings. Watch for changes in fine-detail stability, moving foliage, frame pacing, and resolution rather than relying on a different scene or mode.
  3. Check which performance mode is active. An uncapped mode may show a processing cost; a dynamic-resolution 60 fps mode may preserve its target by rendering at a lower internal resolution. A change in one mode does not predict behavior in another.
  4. Use the game’s option if you prefer the alternative image. Sony’s announcement establishes QSSR as an additional graphics option in the first two games, but does not establish one system-wide QSSR toggle or a standard menu location. The exact control, if present, is therefore title-specific.
  5. Record details if the issue persists. Note the game and patch, PS5 model, graphics mode, display and output settings, affected scene, and whether changing the game’s QSSR option changes the symptom. This information helps distinguish a title-specific rendering problem from an output issue.

Troubleshoot screen flicker or an incorrect 4K/120 Hz signal

If the problem affects the whole screen or the display does not receive the expected signal, follow Sony’s PS5 resolution and HDMI guidance rather than treating a cable change as a QSSR fix. Sony says lowering Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may improve screen flicker. Changing that setting can limit some output formats, so check Sony’s listed limitations before leaving it changed.

  • Confirm that the display supports the signal you are trying to use and has current firmware.
  • Use the PS5-included HDMI cable or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz, and connect the console directly to the display.
  • Use the display’s appropriate HDMI 2.1 port and check the console’s resolution and transfer-rate settings.
  • Change RGB Range only if the HDMI device is sending incorrect RGB range information; Sony does not identify it as a QSSR remedy.
  • If unexpected gameplay behavior occurs with VRR, Sony’s guidance says results vary by TV and recommends turning off “Apply to Unsupported Games.” That may help isolate a general compatibility issue, but is not an established QSSR fix.

If resolution problems persist after checking the signal path and settings, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. The available Sony guidance does not describe a QSSR-specific repair procedure.

Choose between QSSR and another graphics option

There is no universally better setting. Compare options in the same scene and mode, then decide which trade-off matters most for that game.

What to compare What to look for
Fine-detail clarity Whether small details are easier to resolve or appear less stable.
Temporal stability Whether detail shimmers or changes during camera movement, especially on fine or moving objects.
Frame pacing and frame rate Whether motion feels consistent and whether the mode’s performance changes with QSSR.
Resolution Whether the game’s internal or output resolution changes; dynamic resolution may trade internal resolution for steadier performance.

QSSR’s reported image gains were stronger in the tested Wolverine scenes than in Ghost of Yōtei, and the reported performance outcomes differed by mode. Use those findings as context, not as a guarantee for your own scene or setup.
