You can use some web apps and cloud files offline on a Chromebook, but installing a website as an app does not make it work without internet. While connected, enable offline access or download the content you need, then test it before you leave coverage. What works depends on the app, whether its data has synced, and sometimes your Chromebook or administrator settings.
Prepare before you disconnect
- Identify what you need. Check whether each app supports offline use and whether its files must be synced or downloaded first.
- Set up offline access while online. Enable the service’s offline setting, allow time for sync, or download the files you will need.
- Check local storage and device access. Confirm the content is available on the Chromebook, and that the app can be installed on your device if required.
- Test without a connection. Disconnect from Wi-Fi and open the app and files you plan to use. This is the best way to catch missing downloads or app-specific restrictions before they matter.
Google cautions that “some [web apps] may not work completely without an Internet connection.” Installing a site adds it to the Chromebook Launcher; it is not a guarantee of offline support. Google’s guide to using web apps explains how to install them.

Which Chromebook tasks can work offline?
| Task | What to set up online | What happens offline |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | Enable Gmail offline and select how many days of messages to sync. | Read, search, and reply to synced mail. Replies wait in Outbox and send when the connection returns. |
| Google Drive documents, spreadsheets, and slides | Prepare offline access for the files you need and verify they are available before disconnecting. | Google documents viewing, creating, and editing these file types offline; this does not mean every Drive file is stored locally. |
| Google Keep | Open Keep while connected and allow existing notes time to save. | View and edit saved notes or create notes. Changes appear in Keep after reconnecting. |
| Saved web pages | Save the page as an HTML file. | Read the saved page locally; this does not preserve a live connection to the website. |
| Photos and offline apps | Use a local photo editor or find compatible apps in the Chrome Web Store’s Apps category with the “Runs Offline” filter. | Only the supported local editing or app features are available; app behavior varies. |
These are specific offline uses documented by Google, not a promise that an entire online service will function without a connection. Google’s Chromebook offline guide lists these tasks and their setup requirements.

Set up Gmail offline
- While connected, open Gmail’s offline settings.
- Turn on offline mail and choose the number of days of messages to sync.
- Save the setting and allow Gmail to finish syncing before you go offline.
- When disconnected, open Gmail in a regular Chrome window. Offline Gmail does not work in Incognito mode.
You can read, search, and reply to messages that were synced. Replies composed offline are held in a new Outbox and sent automatically after the connection returns. Gmail uses browser storage, which may be much smaller than the Chromebook’s total storage capacity. Attachments can be downloaded and opened with local apps, but Google says they cannot be previewed offline. See Gmail’s offline setup and usage guidance for the account and storage details.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Offline mail can be disrupted if browser storage runs out, you use Guest mode, site data is cleared when Chrome closes, or Chrome is closed before syncing is complete. For a work or school account, an administrator may need to allow the offline setting.
Prepare Drive files and Keep notes
Drive documents, spreadsheets, and slides
Google says Chromebook users can view, create, and edit documents, spreadsheets, and slides offline through Drive. Before leaving coverage, enable or prepare offline access while connected and confirm that the particular files you need are available. Do not assume that every item in Drive has been downloaded or synced.

Keep notes
Open Keep while online and give existing notes time to save. Once offline, you can view or edit saved notes and create new ones. Offline changes appear in Keep after you reconnect.

Save a web page
To keep a page for offline reading, right-click it and select Save as, then save it as an HTML file. This gives you a local copy to open later, not the interactive website or its live content.

Find apps that advertise offline support
In the Chrome Web Store, open the Apps category and filter for “Runs Offline.” Treat that label as a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every feature or piece of content will be available offline; prepare and test the app you intend to use.
Android apps and entertainment
Some Chromebooks support Android apps from Google Play, but availability depends on the device and may be restricted on managed work or school Chromebooks. Google specifically says YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback. Its offline music-download instructions use the YouTube Music Android app and require a YouTube Premium subscription; Android-app availability still depends on the Chromebook and any administrator restrictions.

What a USB drive can—and cannot—do
A compatible USB thumb drive or external hard drive can carry documents and other files for local access. Check that the drive’s connector and file format work with your particular Chromebook, then copy the files you need onto it or the Chromebook’s local storage. Google lists these drives as compatible storage options in its Chromebook transition guide.

Why an app may still fail offline
- The app needs a live connection. Installing a website as a web app creates Launcher access, not an offline mode.
- Content was not synced or downloaded. Offline access applies only to data the app has made available locally.
- Browser mode or storage blocks access. Gmail offline requires a regular Chrome window and sufficient browser storage.
- The Chromebook does not support the app. Chrome Web Store app availability is Chromebook-specific in Google’s current guidance; Android apps are available only on some Chromebooks.
- A work or school policy prevents setup. Managed-device or account administrators can restrict installation or offline settings.
To avoid surprises, prepare each app and its content while connected, check that syncing has finished, and test the exact task offline. Google’s web-app guidance and Android-app compatibility guidance describe the relevant device and installation limits.
