Its stronger graphics hardware and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) give developers more room to improve image quality, ray tracing, or frame rates in supported games. It makes the most sense if the games you play have substantial Pro enhancements, your display can show the gains, and the current total cost feels worthwhile.
What changes in games on PS5 Pro?
The main difference is extra graphics headroom. Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s hardware and capability claims, not independent measurements of a particular game. Sony’s September 2024 announcement describes three central technologies:

- A more powerful GPU: Gives developers additional capacity for graphics work.
- Advanced ray tracing: Can support more detailed lighting, reflections, and shadows in games that use it.
- PSSR: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses machine learning to reconstruct or upscale an image, helping a game present a sharper result without rendering every pixel at full resolution.
Developers decide how to use that capacity. A Pro mode might prioritize a cleaner reconstructed image, ray-traced effects, a higher or steadier frame rate, or some combination. The trade-offs and available modes differ by game; a Pro logo or feature listing does not tell you how large the improvement will be.

Sony announced an upgraded version of PSSR in February 2026, describing goals of more precise reconstruction and greater stability in motion. Sony identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using the upgraded technique. The PlayStation product page also describes an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting and lists supported games such as Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Alan Wake 2, Control, and Cyberpunk 2077. Availability and results vary by title. Check PlayStation’s current feature notes for the games you play.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
What “up to 4K and 120 fps” means
PlayStation says compatible games can offer 60 fps or up to 120 fps alongside ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. That is a capability, not a promise that one game—or every Pro-enhanced game—will deliver all those features at once. Actual resolution, frame rate, stability, and graphics options depend on the title and the mode its developer provides. A display must also support the resolution or refresh rate you want to benefit from it.
Which games look or run better on PS5 Pro?
Only selected PS5 games have Pro-specific features, and the improvements vary. Sony said more than 50 enhanced games were available at launch in November 2024; its product page, accessed October 7, 2026, advertises more than 100. Those are counts of games in the catalogue, not measures of how much any individual game improves. Sony’s launch catalogue announcement and the current product page are useful starting points.
Before upgrading, look up the feature notes for the games you actually play and compare their available modes. Consider:
Recommended Free Tools
- Whether the game has a dedicated PS5 Pro mode or PSSR support.
- Whether the mode improves image reconstruction, detail, or effects you will notice.
- Whether it offers a higher or steadier frame rate, and what visual settings may be traded off.
- Whether your TV or monitor supports the resolution or refresh rate the mode targets.
Sony also says PS5 Pro plays more than 8,500 PS4 titles and that Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. “Some” matters: this does not establish that every backwards-compatible game improves. Sony’s product page explains the feature and its scope.

PS5 Pro vs. standard PS5: the practical differences
| What to compare | PS5 Pro | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics hardware | Sony claims 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5; up to 45% faster rendering is a Sony capability claim, not a per-game benchmark. Source | The baseline system for the comparison in Sony’s announcement. |
| Pro-specific features | Selected games can use Pro enhancements such as PSSR, advanced ray tracing, or modes designed for image quality and performance. Results vary by game. | Does not use PS5 Pro-specific enhancements; the experience depends on the game’s standard PS5 implementation. |
| Game catalogue | More than 100 enhanced PS5 games are advertised on PlayStation’s product page, accessed October 7, 2026. This is a catalogue count, not a performance rating. Source | Plays PS5 games without Pro-only enhancements; the standard PS5 experience remains the baseline being enhanced. |
| Storage | 2TB SSD, according to PlayStation’s product page. Source | Storage capacity depends on the standard PS5 model; the cited product page does not specify it. |
| Disc drive | The announced configuration is disc-less; the PS5 Disc Drive is sold separately. Source | Standard PS5 configurations differ; check the model you are comparing. |
| Price | Sony’s US launch MSRP was $699.99 in September 2024. This is historical, not a current price; check local prices and include a separately purchased Disc Drive if needed. Source | Current price varies by region, model, and retailer; compare against the Pro’s current local price. |
Is PS5 Pro worth it if you already own a PS5?
There is no universal yes or no: the value depends on the games you play, your display, and the price you would pay after accounting for accessories and your existing console.
Consider upgrading if
- Your most-played games have Pro modes that improve image quality, frame rate, or effects you care about.
- You use a 4K or high-refresh display suited to the improvements those modes offer.
- You value those changes enough to justify the current local price, including a Disc Drive if you need one.
Keep your standard PS5 if
- You are happy with its performance and image quality.
- Your regular games have few Pro-specific changes, or the listed differences do not matter much to you.
- Your display cannot show the particular resolution or refresh-rate gains you want, or the total cost is not worthwhile for your setup.
What should a new console buyer compare?
If you do not already own a PS5, compare the current local prices of both models alongside the games and display you intend to use. A Pro premium is most relevant when your chosen games support enhancements you want; otherwise, the standard PS5 may meet your needs without paying for capability you will not use.
Also consider practical setup details. PS5 Pro includes a 2TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, according to PlayStation. Extra storage may be useful depending on your library; Wi-Fi 7 matters only if your network supports it. Neither feature by itself improves game graphics or frame rates. Check the product page for current specifications and feature details.
