A public blockchain records a crypto transfer according to its network’s rules; an exchange separately watches for that transfer and decides when to credit it to your account. A transaction can therefore be visible on-chain while your exchange deposit still says pending—or before the funds are available to trade or withdraw.
Two systems handle an exchange deposit
A public blockchain is a shared database maintained across network nodes. Its blocks refer to earlier blocks, and accepted transactions update the state recorded by the network. As Ethereum.org explains, “A blockchain is a public database that is updated and shared across many computers in a network.”

An exchange account is a separate system. The blockchain records activity for an address under the network’s rules; the exchange monitors supported networks and applies its own policy to associate a deposit with a customer account. The exchange’s balance, deposit status, and trading or withdrawal controls are not themselves entries in the public chain.

- A wallet creates and signs it. A wallet—or a platform acting for the sender—constructs a transaction. The relevant private key signs it to authorize the action. The signature does not make an exchange credit the funds.
- The signed transaction is broadcast. On Ethereum, a signed transaction is broadcast to the network and can wait in a transaction pool before inclusion. Other networks have their own transaction formats and handling.
- Validators or other consensus participants process it. A block producer may include the transaction in a block. Network nodes check the proposed changes against that blockchain’s rules and determine which chain to follow under its consensus mechanism.
- The network’s recorded state changes. Once accepted into the chain, the transaction is visible through the network and can be checked using its transaction hash. The exchange still has to detect it and apply its own deposit policy.
A transaction’s signature, its appearance in a block, and an exchange credit are different events. A transaction may be signed but not yet included; it may appear on-chain while the exchange waits for more confirmations or internal processing.

How to send crypto to an exchange
The destination exchange must support the exact asset and network combination you intend to use. A ticker symbol alone is not enough to identify the right network. Some deposits also require a memo, tag, or other destination information so the exchange can assign the funds to your account.
- Open the exchange’s deposit flow. Select the asset, then choose a network that the exchange currently lists as available for that asset and in your region.
- Copy the deposit details. Use the address shown for the selected network. Include any required memo or tag exactly as displayed.
- Start the transfer from the sending wallet or platform. Match the asset, network, address, and any extra destination field to the exchange’s instructions.
- Check the transaction status. After sending, use the transaction hash on the relevant network explorer and compare its status with the exchange’s deposit page.
Coinbase’s deposit guidance and Kraken’s deposit instructions illustrate platform-specific procedures, not universal ones. Coinbase warns that sending an unsupported asset or using an unsupported network can result in permanent loss. Check the exchange’s current deposit page immediately before sending; supported networks and regional availability can change.

Why a deposit can be on-chain but still pending
Exchanges commonly wait for a specified number of network confirmations before crediting a deposit. The threshold depends on the exchange and asset, and may change. Coinbase Exchange gives Bitcoin with two confirmations as an example in its “Deposit ‘Pending’ – Unconfirmed Transaction” help page; that example is not a general rule for Bitcoin deposits elsewhere or for other assets.

Kraken describes a deposit state in which funds have enough confirmations to be credited for trading but remain unavailable for withdrawal, followed by a later successful state when withdrawals are available. Its deposit-processing guidance is an example of Kraken’s procedure, not a standard shared by every exchange.

| Status or event | What it means |
|---|---|
| Broadcast or pending on the network | The transaction has been sent, but may not yet be included in a block. |
| Visible on-chain | The transaction appears in the network’s records; the exchange may still be waiting for confirmations or processing it. |
| Credited or available to trade | The exchange has applied its account policy and made the balance usable for trading, subject to its rules. |
| Available to withdraw | The exchange permits an outgoing withdrawal; this can occur later than trading availability. |
For a specific deposit, check the transaction on the correct network and the exchange’s status page. Also check that asset’s current confirmation threshold and minimum deposit before sending; neither should be assumed from a different asset or an old transfer.
Ethereum proof-of-stake: one specific consensus example
Ethereum shows why it is important not to treat every blockchain as if it works the same way. In Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system, validators propose blocks and attest to blocks they consider valid. The protocol uses checkpoint votes for finality: Ethereum’s documentation describes a checkpoint link as finalized when at least two-thirds of staked ETH votes for it. These are Ethereum-specific mechanics, not universal requirements for Bitcoin, other proof-of-stake chains, layer-2 networks, or exchange ledgers.

Ethereum documentation also describes 12-second slots and a 32 ETH validator deposit. These are protocol parameters in Ethereum’s documented design, not a promise that an exchange deposit will confirm, credit, or become withdrawable on that schedule.
Before you send: a deposit checklist
- Verify the destination exchange supports the exact asset and network, including availability in your region.
- Copy the deposit address directly from the exchange and include every required memo or tag.
- Check the current minimum deposit and confirmation requirements for that asset and network.
- After sending, locate the transaction hash on the relevant network explorer and compare it with the exchange’s deposit status.
- For an initial transfer, consider a small test deposit where appropriate. Coinbase recommends this in one of its support articles; a test does not guarantee recovery or make an unsupported route safe.
A hardware wallet can be useful if you self-custody crypto and sign your own transactions, but it is not required to use an exchange. It does not control confirmation thresholds or determine when an exchange credits a deposit.

What to compare when choosing a deposit route
When comparing exchange deposit instructions for an asset, compare the details that determine whether a transfer can be correctly received and when you can use it:
- Supported network for the specific asset
- Required memo or tag
- Confirmation threshold
- When the funds become available for trading versus withdrawal
- Regional availability and any minimum deposit
- How the platform describes delayed or unsupported deposits
Support pages explain workflows; they do not establish which exchange is faster or better overall. Check each platform’s current instructions rather than assuming that the same asset name means the same network or deposit rules.
