PS5 Pro vs. PS5: What Changes and Who Should Upgrade?

PS5 Pro adds game-specific graphics and performance enhancements, Wi-Fi 7 and 2 TB storage. Here’s what changes—and when keeping your PS5 makes sense.

PS5 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade mainly for players who want better graphics or smoother performance in games that specifically support its enhancements, especially on a 4K display. It adds a more powerful GPU, PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing, Wi-Fi 7 and 2 TB of built-in storage. Those upgrades are not universal: the benefit depends on each game, and the Pro’s disc drive is sold separately. If your standard PS5 already gives you the image quality and performance you want, keeping it is a reasonable choice.

What changes between PS5 Pro and PS5?

Sony’s published specifications show the hardware differences, but they do not predict how much better a particular game will look or run. The GPU figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison of the same game, patch and settings.

Area PS5 Pro Standard PS5 What it means
Graphics hardware 16.7 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU, according to Sony’s PS5 Pro manual. 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU, according to Sony’s PS5 manual. The Pro has the stronger graphics processor on paper. TFLOPS alone do not establish a game’s frame rate or image quality.
Game rendering PSSR AI upscaling and advanced ray tracing are among the Pro features. Supported games may combine enhanced 4K output with higher frame rates. Runs the standard PS5 game experience. Improvements depend on the game’s Pro implementation; they are not applied equally to every title.
Built-in storage 2 TB SSD. Sony’s US product listing gives 1 TB for the disc console and 825 GB for the digital console. Both consoles have an M.2 expansion connector. System software reserves some built-in capacity, so usable space is lower than the headline figure.
Wireless networking Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, with support for Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 routers. Wi-Fi 6-class support (802.11ax), according to Sony’s current manual. Wi-Fi 7 requires a compatible router and suitable network conditions. It is unlikely to be a compelling upgrade reason on its own for most wired or Wi-Fi 6 users.
Disc playback Disc drive sold separately. The standard disc console includes a drive; digital editions do not. Pro owners who use physical games or movie discs need the compatible detachable drive. Initial pairing requires an internet connection.
PS4 compatibility Plays over 8,500 PS4 games, according to Sony; Game Boost can improve some PS4 and PS5 titles. Supports the PS5 and PS4 game ecosystem. Sony notes that a small number of PS4 titles are incompatible. Check a particular legacy game if it matters to your library.

How much better do PS5 Pro games look and run?

The Pro’s most important difference is its support for game-specific graphics and performance modes. PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is an AI-enhanced upscaling feature; its presence does not mean every game renders natively at 4K. Sony says compatible games can support 60 frames per second or up to 120 frames per second with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution, but those capabilities apply only to compatible titles. Select games can support output up to 8K; that is not a general promise for every game or setup.

Sony also says Pro feature support varies by game. Check the specific titles you play most, rather than assuming the console will improve every game in your library. A 4K display is a better fit for noticing image-quality changes, while the value of a performance boost depends on the game’s supported modes and your own preference for visual detail or responsiveness.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

A game-specific example

On Sony’s PS5 Pro product page, Insomniac Games Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald describes a new default Performance Pro mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with 60 frames per second. That is a developer statement about one game’s mode, not an independent test or a promise that other titles will offer the same combination.

Should you upgrade to PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro is a stronger fit if…

  • You regularly play games that have meaningful PS5 Pro enhancements and want the better image quality or smoother performance those titles offer.
  • You use a 4K display and care about the supported games’ graphics improvements.
  • You want more built-in storage than your current standard PS5 configuration offers.
  • You are comfortable buying a separate disc drive if you use physical games or movie discs.

Keeping your PS5 makes sense if…

  • You are satisfied with your current games’ image quality and performance.
  • Your most-played titles lack meaningful Pro enhancements.
  • Your display or viewing setup would not let you appreciate the changes.
  • The local price difference matters more to you than the improvements in supported games.

Sony’s official pages do not establish a stable price comparison across retailers. Compare checkout prices and any trade-in offer where you live at the time you are considering an upgrade; the recommendation above is buyer guidance based on Sony’s product claims, not an independent comparative benchmark.

What to know about the Pro’s disc drive and compatibility

The PS5 Pro has a port for Sony’s detachable disc drive but does not include the drive. Sony confirms that the compatible accessory supports PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD formats. Initial console-and-drive pairing requires an internet connection. If you own physical games or watch discs, include the drive in your decision rather than comparing console-only configurations.

For a particular PS4 title, check compatibility before upgrading if it is important to you: Sony says the Pro plays over 8,500 PS4 games but also notes that a small number are incompatible. Both console families also have an M.2 expansion connector; check Sony’s requirements before choosing an expansion drive.
