There is no single desk height or chair that fits every gamer. The right setup lets you sit with your back supported and feet resting on the floor or a footrest, while your shoulders stay relaxed, elbows remain close to your sides, and wrists stay straight at the keyboard. Adjust the chair and work surface together, then place the monitor directly ahead. For long sessions, make room to change posture and move around.
Set up your chair, keyboard, and desk in that order
Use your seated position—not a standard desk-height number—as the starting point. A desk that works for one person may leave another reaching up or hunching down, depending on body proportions, chair adjustment, keyboard placement, and desk design.

- Set the chair height. Sit with your back supported and adjust the seat so your feet rest on the floor. If they cannot reach comfortably, use a footrest. Avoid a position that puts pressure under your thighs.
- Move close to the keyboard and mouse. Keep your shoulders relaxed and elbows near your body. Aim for your elbows to be about level with the keyboard, with wrists straight rather than bent up, down, or sideways.
- Bring the work surface to your arms. Adjust the desk or keyboard tray so you can maintain that relaxed arm position. If a fixed desk is high, raising the chair may help—but support your feet with a footrest if necessary. A keyboard tray can help when the desk or chair cannot otherwise be adjusted to fit.
- Fine-tune seat depth and back support. Adjust the seat so your back is supported without pressure behind your knees. Set the backrest to support your lower back without creating pressure points. Adjust or remove armrests if they prevent you from sitting close enough to the desk.
- Position the monitor. Put it directly in front of you, at least 20 inches (50 cm) away, and arrange it so you can look ahead without tilting your head. Make sure the desk is deep enough to maintain that distance.
- Change position during long sessions. Take practical opportunities to stand, walk, or do another activity. The cited office-ergonomics guidance does not specify a gaming-specific break interval.
How to choose a chair that fits
Judge a chair by whether it fits your body and workstation, not by a gaming or ergonomic label. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety puts it this way: “A chair becomes ergonomic only when it specifically suits a worker’s size (body dimensions), their particular workstation, and the tasks that must be performed there.” Its guidance was last revised January 7, 2021, and confirmed current June 1, 2026.
- Seat height: The adjustment range should let you sit with your feet supported and without pressure under your thighs.
- Seat depth: Look for a setting that supports your thighs without pressing behind your knees.
- Backrest: Check that you can adjust it to support your lower back without uncomfortable pressure points.
- Width and cushioning: The seat should suit your body and feel comfortable for the task. Breathable material may help reduce heat and moisture buildup.
- Armrests: Adjustable or removable armrests are useful if fixed ones stop you from sitting close to the desk.
- Stability and fit: Confirm the chair suits your size and intended use. Try it for comfort over an extended period when practical; OSHA cautions that its example criteria may not suit every body type.
OSHA’s purchasing checklist gives example dimensions, not universal fit rules: a seat-height adjustment range of 15–22 inches and a seat-pan length of 15–17 inches. Treat these as reference values, not a target every chair or user must match.

What to check when choosing a desk
- Keyboard position: Can you place the keyboard around elbow height while keeping your shoulders relaxed and wrists straight?
- Depth: Is there space to put the monitor directly ahead at least 20 inches away?
- Legroom: Can your knees, feet, and legs fit without obstruction, with enough room to change posture? OSHA says under-desk leg clearance should generally be 20–28 inches (50–72 cm).
- Adjustability: A height-adjustable desk can accommodate different body positions, including seated and standing use. OSHA recommends height-adjustable desks, but the useful setting depends on the person and workstation.
- Fixed-height workarounds: If you cannot bring the surface to a comfortable keyboard position, consider whether a keyboard tray would help. If you raise the chair to match a high desk, check whether you also need a footrest.
OSHA’s purchasing guide includes keyboard-height ranges for seated and standing tasks; those figures are guidance, not a substitute for checking your own arm and wrist position. A product specification can illustrate how much adjustment one desk offers: CORSAIR lists the Platform:6 Elevate at 29–48 inches (74–122 cm). That is one model’s stated range, not evidence that it will fit every user; confirm current specifications before buying.

Desk height, chair height, seat depth, armrests, keyboard position, and monitor placement affect one another. For example, raising a chair to reach a high desk can leave feet unsupported; moving a keyboard farther away can prompt reaching; and an armrest that hits the desk can keep you from sitting close enough. Check the full seated position after every adjustment rather than choosing a desk or chair by its advertised category alone.

Adjustable furniture can make it easier to fit different people or postures, but it does not make a setup automatically comfortable. Fixed-height desks can still work when a keyboard tray, chair adjustment, or footrest resolves the mismatch. The aim is a supported, relaxed position with clear legroom—not a particular product label or universal height.
