PS5 Pro offers more graphics headroom than the standard PS5, but it does not make every game sharper or faster in the same way. The difference depends on each game’s Pro enhancements and the modes it offers. In the U.S., Sony’s suggested price for PS5 Pro is $899.99, compared with $649.99 for PS5 and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, effective April 2, 2026. Whether the premium is worthwhile comes down to the games you play, the image or frame-rate tradeoffs you prefer, your display, and whether you need a separate disc drive.
What PS5 Pro changes
Sony announced PS5 Pro with 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster rendering than the then-current PS5. These are Sony’s specifications and performance claims from its September 10, 2024 announcement, not independent benchmark results. “Up to 45% faster rendering” is not a promise of a 45% increase in frame rate in every game.

The hardware changes are intended to give supported games more room for visual detail, ray tracing, and higher or steadier image quality. Sony describes Pro’s ray tracing as more powerful for effects such as dynamic reflections and refractions. Its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses machine learning to upscale game images. The practical benefit depends on whether a game implements these features and how its graphics modes are configured. Sony explicitly says that “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes the hardware and its game-dependent features.

There is no single Pro-versus-standard result that applies to every title. A game’s resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and upscaling can differ by mode, and a Pro enhancement may improve one aspect without changing another. Sony’s official game examples illustrate those tradeoffs; they are descriptions of specific games, not independent tests.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: similar listed frame rate, different ray tracing
Sony lists Performance mode on both consoles at upscaled 2160p and 60 FPS. The standard PS5 version uses selective ray tracing, while PS5 Pro uses standard ray tracing. On Pro, the listed Fidelity mode is upscaled 2160p at 30 FPS with extended ray tracing. Sony also lists Balanced modes at 40 FPS; those modes require a 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1. These figures apply to the modes Sony lists for this game, not to PS5 games generally. See the Assassin’s Creed Shadows PS5 Pro feature breakdown.
Other examples show different kinds of enhancement
- Saros: PlayStation.Blog describes a sharper image from scene to scene on Pro while dynamic resolution helps maintain frame rate. Sony’s Saros feature post.
- Black Flag Resynced: PlayStation.Blog describes extended ray tracing, strand-based hair, and updated PSSR on Pro. Sony’s Black Flag Resynced feature post.
- DOOM: The Dark Ages: PlayStation.Blog describes support for updated PSSR exclusive to PS5 Pro for that title. Sony’s DOOM: The Dark Ages feature post.
These examples show why the game and mode matter more than a console-wide promise: an enhancement might target ray tracing, image clarity, or the way the game maintains performance.
PSSR support: what the title count and update mean
PSSR analyzes a game’s image as it upscales it. On February 27, 2026, Sony said it had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles, and named Resident Evil Requiem as the first title to use a newer version. That is Sony’s dated figure, not an independently audited count; the supported catalogue can change as games are updated.
In a March 16, 2026 post, Sony described an updated PSSR rollout to selected existing games and an optional system setting for games that support PSSR. Sony also cautions that results vary by game. The setting or a Pro label therefore does not guarantee a particular native resolution, frame rate, or visual result. Check the specific games you play and the modes they offer. Sony’s February 27 PSSR announcement and March 16 rollout update explain the rollout and its game-dependent nature.
U.S. suggested prices and what comes in the box
Sony’s U.S. suggested retail prices below are effective April 2, 2026. Retailer prices may differ, and prices outside the U.S. are not represented here.
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
| Console | U.S. suggested price |
|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 |
At those U.S. suggested prices, PS5 Pro costs $250 more than PS5 and $300 more than PS5 Digital Edition. Those differences are calculated from Sony’s announced prices; your actual comparison should use the prices available from retailers where you live. Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement gives the U.S. figures and effective date.
Sony’s 2024 announcement says PS5 Pro has a 2TB SSD and includes one DualSense controller. The console is disc-less; Sony says its Disc Drive for PS5 is sold separately. If you use physical game discs or want UHD Blu-ray playback, include the drive’s current local price and availability in your comparison, and confirm compatibility before buying. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes the included configuration and separate drive.

How to decide whether PS5 Pro is worth the upgrade
Use your own games and setup as the test. A broad claim about improved graphics cannot tell you whether the specific mode you want is available in a game you play.
- Check support for your regular games. Look for each game’s PS5 Pro-specific features and PSSR support. Do not assume that support in one title carries over to another.
- Compare the actual modes. Decide whether you value image quality, ray tracing, or frame rate, then check what the game’s Pro and standard PS5 modes offer. A Pro mode can improve visual effects while retaining the same listed frame rate, as in Sony’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows example.
- Check your display against the mode you want. Some modes have display requirements. In the Assassin’s Creed Shadows example, Balanced mode requires a 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1; that requirement should not be generalized to every game or mode.
- Include your disc needs and total price. Compare the current prices of both consoles where you shop, and add the separate Disc Drive if you need disc playback.
PS5 Pro is a stronger fit if…
- You prioritize visual fidelity or ray tracing and the games you play have Pro modes that improve those aspects.
- Your display can use the specific modes you want.
- The additional cost, including any separate disc drive you need, fits your budget.
Standard PS5 may make more sense if…
- You are satisfied with how your games look and perform on your current PS5.
- The Pro enhancements in your regular games are limited or do not improve what you care about.
- You would rather avoid the price premium, or need a disc drive and want to account for its separate cost.
The evidence available here is primarily Sony’s specifications, announced prices, and selected game feature descriptions. It does not establish independent console benchmarks, retailer-by-retailer prices or stock, or a complete current catalogue of enhanced games. For a purchase decision, rely on the current price and the specific games and modes you intend to use.
