Start with the controller powered off and disconnected, then gently wipe the thumbsticks and grips with a clean, soft cloth. If dry wiping is not enough, use only the cleaning method approved for your exact controller: manufacturers differ on whether damp cloths, disinfectant, or chemical cleaners are allowed. Keep liquid away from the stick bases, seams, buttons, and ports.
What you need before cleaning
- A clean, soft, lint-free cloth; microfiber is a practical choice for surface wiping.
- For stubborn dirt, the cleaning product and cloth method allowed by the controller’s own manual or support page.
Do not assume every thumbstick or grip uses the same plastic, rubber, or coating. The manufacturer guidance below is model-specific, and it does not establish that one cleaner is safe for every controller.

How to clean thumbsticks and grips
- Power down and disconnect. Turn the controller off and unplug its cable or disconnect it from power. Remove detachable accessories only if the instructions for that controller allow it.
- Wipe gently while dry. Use a clean, soft cloth on the thumbstick cap and grip surfaces. Avoid pressing hard or grinding grit into textured areas.
- Check the exact model’s cleaning instructions. If a dry wipe does not remove the grime, use only the cloth moisture or cleaner that the manufacturer permits. Dampen the cloth rather than applying liquid to the controller.
- Keep moisture away from openings. Use as little liquid as the instructions allow, and do not let it pool around the stick base, buttons, seams, or ports.
- Let it dry fully. If you used a damp cloth or an approved disinfectant, wait until the controller is completely dry before reconnecting or playing.

Should you use alcohol on controller grips?
Not unless the instructions for your exact controller expressly allow it for the task. Nintendo permits a specified approximately 70% alcohol disinfectant on a lightly dampened cloth for its listed products; Sony’s DualSense manual says not to use alcohol or other chemicals. Microsoft’s cited alcohol use is for removing adhesive residue during a particular Elite Series 2 repair, not routine thumbstick cleaning. These differences are why “alcohol is safe for controllers” is too broad a rule.

How to handle sticky or heavily soiled surfaces
First try a gentle dry wipe, then consult the model-specific instructions before introducing moisture or cleaner. Do not scrub aggressively or use an unapproved solvent to make a sticky surface feel clean. If stickiness remains, or the surface appears tacky, cracked, or worn, cleaning may not address the underlying condition; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that cleaning can restore worn or discolored material.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Spraying or pouring cleaner directly onto the controller. Microsoft explicitly says not to apply liquids directly, and Nintendo warns against pouring liquid onto or submerging its products. Microsoft · Nintendo.
- Using alcohol, solvents, or chemically treated wipes on every controller as if the materials were identical.
- Letting moisture gather around the stick base, buttons, seams, or ports.
- Using a repair-specific instruction—such as alcohol for adhesive removal—as a general cleaning recipe.
- Reconnecting or playing before the controller is fully dry after a damp cleaning method.
