Before you turn on your Galaxy Z Fold
If you plan to transfer data, have your old device nearby, powered on, and unlocked. Samsung recommends keeping the devices close during the transfer. Charging both phones first is a sensible precaution because a transfer can take time.
- Know the Wi-Fi network name and password in case the Fold does not carry over the old phone’s network during quick setup.
- If you may use a cable, check that it is compatible with both devices; a cable is optional, not a requirement.
- For SIM or eSIM activation, follow the instructions for your carrier, model, plan, and market. There is no single activation sequence that applies to every Fold.
Start the setup wizard
- Turn on the Galaxy Z Fold and choose your preferred language on the welcome screen.
- Tap Start, then review and accept the terms shown on the device.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. If quick setup transfers the old phone’s network, follow the prompts; otherwise, select your network and enter its password.
- When asked whether to restore or transfer data, decide whether to use Smart Switch now or continue without transferring.
- Follow the remaining on-screen prompts for Google and Samsung accounts, screen lock, and other setup options displayed on your device.
Samsung’s Fold7-family setup guide includes language, Wi-Fi, account sign-in, terms, and lock-screen setup. The exact order and labels can differ by carrier and software.

Transfer data during setup with Smart Switch
Samsung’s US Galaxy Z Fold8 setup guide offers a QR-guided Smart Switch flow for transferring supported content from a Galaxy or other Android device, or from an iPhone or iPad. Keep the old device on and unlocked while you follow the connection prompts on both phones.
- On the new Fold, choose the previous device type when prompted: Galaxy/Android or iPhone/iPad.
- Use the new phone to scan the QR code shown during setup, if prompted, and follow the instructions on both devices.
- Choose a transfer method: wireless or USB cable. Samsung describes wireless as the easiest option. A compatible cable is an alternative; its use is not required.
- Select the data scope offered on screen and begin the transfer. Keep both devices close and follow any prompts that appear.

Choose wireless or cable transfer

You can transfer supported content later with Smart Switch; Samsung documents a route that does not require resetting the Galaxy Z Fold8.

- On the Fold, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup.
- Choose Receive on this phone.
- Select the old device type, connect the devices using the offered prompts, and choose what to transfer.
Samsung recommends transferring during initial setup for what it describes as the fastest and easiest experience. That is Samsung’s guidance, not a published speed comparison.
Check the new phone before retiring the old one
Once setup and any transfer are complete, check that the items you rely on are available on the Fold: contacts, messages, photos, and apps, for example. Confirm that you can sign in to important services and access your authenticator method before erasing or trading in the old phone. Transfer support varies by content and platform, so verify anything important rather than assuming it moved.
