Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, test the included controller, try a known-good PS5 game disc if a detachable drive is included, and run a game while watching for temperature warnings or instability. These checks can reveal faults during a seller-supervised inspection, but a brief demonstration cannot guarantee the console’s long-term reliability.
Prepare the console for a fair test
- Confirm what is included. Check that the unit is a PS5 Pro and ask whether its detachable disc drive is included. Without the drive, you cannot verify disc reading. Sony’s manuals index lists an instruction manual for the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive; confirm the exact drive and console compatibility before buying a missing or replacement unit. Sony’s manuals and guides may vary by region.
- Inspect without opening the case. Look over the covers, ports, cables, controller, and exterior for cracks, damage, liquid residue, missing parts, or signs of tampering. Do not open the enclosure: Sony warns, “To avoid electrical shock, do not open the enclosure. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.”
- Arrange airflow. Place the console on a stable surface with its rear and bottom airflow areas unobstructed. Sony says the PS5 Pro takes in and exhausts air from those surfaces. Do not test it inside a closed cabinet or with vents blocked.
- Ask to power it on. Have the seller demonstrate that it reaches the home screen and permits the checks below. If it cannot be powered on or tested, treat its working condition as unverified rather than relying on appearance.
Check the DualSense controller
Test the controller in a game or system menus, not just by looking at it. If pairing is unclear, connect it by USB first, then check its wireless response.

- Move both analog sticks slowly through their full range, then release them. Look for cursor or character movement that continues without input, jitter, dead zones, or a stick that catches.
- Try L3 and R3 clicks; every face button and D-pad direction; the shoulder buttons; and the full travel of L2 and R2. Also check the touch pad, PS button, mute button, vibration, and speaker or headset behavior if those features matter to you.
- Check that the controller charges over USB and remains connected wirelessly during the available inspection. This does not measure battery capacity or establish how long the battery will last.
A controller that is merely uncharged or having trouble pairing is not necessarily proof of a hardware fault. Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting guidance gives a reset procedure: turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, hold its reset button for at least five seconds, then reconnect it with the official USB cable and press PS. A reset may help with pairing, but it does not prove that the sticks, buttons, or battery are healthy. If input problems persist, Sony advises updating system software where possible and using its repair diagnostic.

Use a known-good PS5 game disc. Check that the drive accepts it, the console recognizes it, the game launches, reading continues normally, and the disc ejects. If possible, repeat with a second known-good PS5 disc.

- For a vertical console on its stand, Sony says the labeled side of the disc faces left when inserting it.
- Do not use burned discs or audio CDs to judge the drive: Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play them. The PS5 Pro guide lists supported PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and other disc formats; territorial restrictions may apply to media.
- If a disc has fingerprints or dirt, clean it with a soft, clean cloth and retry. Sony also recommends trying another game, Blu-ray disc, or DVD when troubleshooting a disc that will not play.
If one disc fails but another supported disc works, the first disc may be the problem. If multiple known-good supported discs fail, or the drive repeatedly makes abnormal loading or ejection attempts, regard the drive as suspect. A system reset is not a sensible first response to a likely mechanical fault. Do not remove covers or play the console with covers off; Sony’s stuck-disc guidance warns against turning on or playing the console with the cover off. A stuck-disc recovery is not a buyer test—leave it to the owner or qualified service.
Check for overheating warnings and instability
Run a demanding game during the inspection and observe the console as it operates. Look for an on-screen high-temperature warning, an unexpected shutdown, freezes, or repeated instability. Do not block vents or intentionally heat the console.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide specifies an operating temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C. That is the documented ambient operating range, not an internal-component temperature reading or a DIY pass/fail threshold. Sony does not publish a timed consumer stress-test standard in the cited guidance, so there is no official number of minutes that proves a used console is safe.

In a 2024 PlayStation.Blog engineering article, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said the console needs more air for cooling and described its rear and bottom intake and exhaust surfaces. Use warnings and instability—not a hand-held temperature guess—as the practical signs to watch for.

If a high-temperature message appears, stop the game and power down the console. Let it cool, then check that it is in a ventilated position with airflow areas clear. Persistent warnings or shutdowns are a reason to walk away or arrange qualified service; Sony lists overheating in its PS5 Pro overheating troubleshooting.

Consider the checks together rather than treating one uncertain symptom as a diagnosis. A single failure on a questionable disc or an uncharged controller may have a simple explanation; a problem that recurs across more than one known-good test is more concerning.

- Controller: Do inputs respond consistently, sticks return to center, and wireless connection and charging work?
- Drive, if included: Does it read and eject more than one supported, known-good disc normally?
- Stability: Can the console run a game without a temperature warning, abrupt shutdown, or repeated instability during the inspection?
- Condition and terms: Are the exterior and airflow areas in reasonable condition, and will the seller allow enough time to test or offer a return option if a fault appears?
A short in-person test only tells you what the console did during that test. Do not treat a working demonstration as a guarantee of future reliability. Avoid factory reset or system reinstallation as casual inspection steps: Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes console information.
