PS5 Pro supports both horizontal and vertical placement when you use the appropriate support: attach the included horizontal feet for a horizontal setup, or use a compatible vertical stand when placing it upright. Sony’s published guidance does not show that either orientation cools better or collects less dust. Choose based on your space, then keep the vents clear and follow Sony’s ventilation guidance.

What is known about PS5 Pro airflow and dust
Sony’s teardown interview with PS5 Pro mechanical and electrical design leads describes three exterior blades that serve as airflow paths, with air taken in and exhausted from the rear and bottom surfaces. It also describes a redesigned fan intended to move air more efficiently and a carefully selected heat-sink layout. These are design details, not evidence that one orientation performs better than the other.
Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida says, “PS5 Pro is a high performing console, so it requires more air to cool it down.” He also says, “The vent (exhaust vent) surface is also larger compared to other PS5 models, and air is taken in and exhausted from the rear and bottom surfaces.” Sony notes a top-side dust catcher for cleaning purposes: “On the top side, just like in previous PS5 models, a dust catcher is provided for cleaning purposes.” The interview does not quantify dust accumulation by orientation or say that either position prevents buildup. How to place the console for ventilation
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side, as Sony recommends.
- Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed.
- Avoid long-fibre carpet and cramped locations.
- Do not operate PS5 Pro in a closed cabinet or another place where heat can build up.
Sony’s general PS5 ventilation guidance gives the clearance and vent recommendations. The PS5 Pro Safety Guide warns against enclosed spaces where heat may accumulate and gives the placement instructions for the feet and vertical stand.
Cleaning dust and responding to fan noise
Sony says fan noise can increase during some games because the fan is temporarily working faster to cool the system. A louder fan by itself does not establish that the console is overheating or that its orientation is wrong.

- Turn off the console and disconnect the AC power cable from the rear.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove accumulated dust around the air vents.
- Before using the console again, make sure the vents and surrounding space remain clear.
These are Sony’s stated cleaning steps; its guidance does not recommend a particular vacuum product.
Does vertical placement cause more dust or worse cooling?
The Sony sources cited here provide no controlled vertical-versus-horizontal temperature comparison, dust-accumulation measurement, or orientation-specific service-rate data. Claims that upright placement inherently overheats PS5 Pro or gathers more dust are therefore not established by this evidence. What is established is that both setups are supported with the right hardware and that ventilation and keeping vents clear matter in either position.
