The game’s internal render resolution, any upscaling it applies, and the console’s video output setting describe different stages of the image pipeline. That distinction also helps explain Sony’s PSSR and newly announced QSSR technologies.
What is the difference between native resolution, game resolution and output resolution?
Think of a game image as passing through stages before it reaches the screen:

- Internal render resolution: The resolution at which the game initially draws its image. A game may render at 2160p, at a lower resolution, or at a resolution that changes during play.
- Upscaling: If the initial image is below the target resolution, an upscaler reconstructs or enlarges it to produce a higher-resolution image. This can be integrated into a game’s rendering pipeline.
- Console output resolution: The resolution of the video signal sent from the PS5 to the display. Sony lists output up to 2160p (4K UHD) for PS5; choosing 2160p does not prove that a game rendered internally at 2160p. Sony’s 4K setup guidance covers the output setting and display requirements.
“Native 4K” is best reserved for a game that actually renders at 2160p, rather than one that renders below 2160p and upscales to a 2160p output. A TV receiving a 4K signal tells you the output resolution, not necessarily the game’s internal resolution.

Does PS5 upscale games to 4K?
It depends on the game and its graphics settings. A game can render below 2160p and use game-level upscaling before the console sends a 2160p signal to the TV. Another game or mode may render at a different internal resolution. The output setting and the game’s rendering choices are separate.

Dynamic resolution scaling (DRS) adds another variable: a game can raise or lower its internal render resolution in response to performance demands. It may then upscale the image to a consistent output resolution. Ubisoft explains that DRS can reduce the pre-upscale resolution in demanding scenes to help balance frame rate and visual fidelity in its technical account of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
What is game-level upscaling?
Game-level upscaling is reconstruction or enlargement built into a game’s rendering pipeline. Developers choose and integrate the technique, sometimes using platform-provided technology. As a result, the method and image quality can differ from one title or graphics mode to another.

In its Assassin’s Creed Shadows explanation, Ubisoft describes PSSR as an AI-driven upscaler and contrasts it with TAAU, an older approach. Ubisoft says its PSSR implementation worked alongside system-software changes. These details describe that game’s PS5 Pro implementation; they should not be treated as a universal comparison for every title. Ubisoft’s technical article also uses 1080p-to-2160p as an explanatory example, not as a claim that all games use that input resolution.
What are PSSR and QSSR?
PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony’s support documentation describes an Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting for CFI-7000 model-group consoles in certain compatible games. It is not a setting that applies to every PS5 model or every game. Check Sony’s PS5 Pro support page for the documented setting and compatibility scope.

QSSR on standard PS5
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a streamlined AI-upscaling tier for standard PS5. Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option through announced patches. Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but that does not mean every game supports it. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes its claims about detail and image stability qualitatively; it does not provide a universal, independently measured performance gain.
QSSR and PSSR are related Sony technologies, but they are not interchangeable labels for a feature available in every game or on every PS5. The console model, game, patch and selected graphics option all matter.

What are the trade-offs of upscaling?
Rendering below the target resolution can give a game more performance headroom, but reconstruction may affect fine detail or introduce artifacts. Results depend on the technique, scene and implementation, so an upscaler’s name alone does not guarantee a better-looking or faster game.

It reports that its PSSR implementation was more stable than TAA overall in its testing for that game, with notably less shimmering. That assessment belongs to Ubisoft’s specific implementation and should not be generalized to other games. Ubisoft’s account explains how DRS and upscaling can work together rather than requiring the game to render for its most demanding moments at all times.

Sony describes QSSR as improving detail and image stability compared with conventional approaches, but its announcement does not quantify a universal benefit. Frame rate, consistency and image quality depend on the particular game’s implementation and graphics mode.
Is 2160p the same as native 4K?
No. 2160p describes a 4K-resolution video output; native 4K describes the game’s internal rendering resolution. A game can render below 2160p, upscale its image and still be sent to the TV as a 2160p signal. To judge a game’s rendering, look for information about its internal resolution and whether it uses DRS or upscaling—not just the PS5 output setting.
How do you enable 4K output on PS5?
For the TV to display a 4K signal, Sony says you need a compatible 4K display and the PS5 set to 2160p output. The console supports output through 2160p and 4K/120Hz subject to display and connection support. Sony recommends using the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable generally. The display and cable carry the signal; neither performs a game’s upscaling. Follow Sony’s 4K resolution guidance for setup details.
