Choose PC if you already own suitable hardware and value adjustable graphics, ultrawide displays, unlocked frame rates, or flexible input mapping. Neither platform is the universal winner: your best choice depends on the specific horror games you plan to play, the hardware you already have, and the features you care about.
The short answer: match the platform to your setup and your game list
A PS5 gives every player the same core hardware, a straightforward installation path, and game-specific console features such as DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and SSD-enabled scene transitions in supported titles. You spend less time checking component compatibility and more time playing.

A PC gives you more control. A compatible system can expose graphics presets, ray tracing controls, upscaling options, ultrawide aspect ratios, unlocked frame rates, keyboard-and-mouse support, and remappable controls. That flexibility also means checking each game’s requirements, updating drivers, selecting settings, and accepting that performance depends on your components.

What the two platforms offer at a glance
| Decision area | PS5 | PC |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | One defined hardware target; install the console edition and play without component matching. | Requirements and settings differ by game; you may need to configure graphics, drivers, display modes, and controls. |
| Graphics | Developers tune a fixed console configuration. In Until Dawn, Sony describes ray-traced lighting and shadows. | Potentially broader settings. Until Dawn documents ray tracing on supported hardware, DLSS and FSR options, and adjustable output. |
| Frame rate and displays | Uses the modes and output targets provided by the console version. | Until Dawn supports unlocked frame rates and ultrawide aspect ratios, subject to your hardware and monitor. |
| Controls | DualSense features are integrated when a game supports them. | Mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense, and other controllers are supported across PlayStation Studios PC games, but feature parity varies by title. |
| Audio and immersion | Until Dawn lists Tempest 3D AudioTech and DualSense effects on PS5. | Headphones, speakers, and controller effects depend on the game, operating system, connection method, and hardware. |
| Library decision | Check the current PlayStation Store listing for your region and edition. | Check the individual PC store page, system requirements, launcher, and account requirements. Sony’s PC catalog is a selection, not a complete list of PC horror games. |
| Ownership | The PS5 edition is a separate product from the PC edition for PlayStation Studios releases. | A PC purchase does not automatically grant the console edition, and saves do not currently transfer between the two platforms. |
These are platform tendencies, not guarantees for every horror release. A particular game can omit a feature, use a different performance target, or require an account on one platform but not the other.
Until Dawn is the clearest apples-to-apples example
Sony’s official pages list Until Dawn on both PS5 and PC, making it a useful implementation case rather than evidence that every horror game behaves the same way.
What the PS5 version documents
- Ray-traced visuals, including lighting and shadows.
- DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
- Tempest 3D AudioTech support when used with compatible audio equipment.
- SSD-enabled scene transitions that take advantage of the console’s storage architecture.
Those features are presented on the official PS5 game page. They are relevant if tactile feedback, trigger resistance, and spatial audio are part of what makes a horror game effective for you. They do not imply that every PS5 horror title includes all four features.

What the PC version documents
- Unlocked frame rates rather than a single fixed console target.
- Ultrawide aspect-ratio support for compatible monitors.
- Ray tracing on hardware that supports it.
- DLSS and FSR options to trade image reconstruction against performance, where supported.
- Input remapping and support for multiple control methods.
The official PC page describes these options. “Unlocked” does not mean a guaranteed frame rate: the result depends on your processor, graphics card, memory, storage, resolution, settings, and background workload. Ray tracing and upscaling options likewise depend on supported hardware and the selected quality target.
Until Dawn PC requirements, with the targets attached
Sony’s published specifications are for Until Dawn and should not be treated as a minimum standard for the entire horror genre. The figures below retain the resolution, frame-rate, quality, and hardware context supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2024.
| Specification tier | Published target | Graphics hardware | Memory and storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Average 30 frames per second at 720p on Low settings | GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 470 class GPU; at least 6 GB VRAM | 8 GB RAM; 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended | Average 60 frames per second at 1080p on Medium settings | GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 6600 XT class GPU | 16 GB RAM; 70 GB SSD |
“Average” in these published targets is not a promise that every scene will remain at that rate. You should also confirm the current listing for operating-system requirements, driver guidance, patches, and any changes made after the 2024 specification post.
How to choose if you already own equipment
Choose PS5 when your current setup is minimal or inconsistent
- You do not already have a PC that meets the particular game’s requirements.
- You want one supported hardware target instead of troubleshooting component combinations.
- You play from a television or living-room display and prefer a controller-first experience.
- The PS5 edition of a game specifically advertises features you want, such as DualSense effects or Tempest 3D AudioTech.
A console is not automatically the cheaper route. Its purchase price varies by model, region, retailer, and current offers, while a PC owner may already have most of the necessary hardware. Compare what you would need to buy now, not an abstract platform price.
Choose PC when you already have capable hardware
- Your graphics card, processor, RAM, and SSD meet the specific game’s recommended or minimum tier.
- You use an ultrawide monitor, a high-refresh display, or a resolution not offered by the console version.
- You want to adjust individual settings, use DLSS or FSR where available, or target an unlocked frame rate.
- You prefer keyboard and mouse, remapped controls, or a choice of several controllers.
If your computer falls below a game’s minimum, buying the PC version does not create performance headroom. You may need to reduce resolution and quality, upgrade components, or select the console edition instead.
Graphics, frame rate, and display flexibility
Why PS5 can be the simpler visual choice
Console developers tune a known hardware configuration. You generally select from the modes exposed by the game rather than balancing dozens of settings. That can make a horror game easier to start and easier to support when you move between rooms or displays. The trade-off is that you cannot add a faster graphics card, change internal rendering settings beyond the game’s menus, or assume support for every monitor format.

Why PC can be the more adaptable choice
PC versions can let you choose resolution, texture quality, shadows, ray tracing, upscaling, field of view, frame-rate limits, and display aspect ratio. Until Dawn specifically lists ultrawide support, unlocked frame rates, ray tracing, DLSS, and FSR. Those options are valuable if your monitor or graphics card is unusual, but they require experimentation. An unlocked setting can expose frame-time spikes if the system cannot sustain the requested output, and aggressive upscaling can alter image clarity.
Use the game’s own requirement tiers as a starting point. If you want a resolution or ray-tracing mode beyond the published target, treat that as an additional performance demand rather than an entitlement.
Controls, haptics, and audio: the details horror players notice
PS5’s integrated controller path
On PS5, a supported game can use DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers without you assembling a compatibility chain. In Until Dawn, Sony describes those effects alongside Tempest 3D AudioTech. A compatible headset or speaker arrangement is still needed to hear spatial audio as intended, and the intensity of any effect remains a game-design decision.
PC’s wider input choice, with title-specific limits
PlayStation’s PC-games FAQ says PlayStation Studios PC games support many input options, including mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense, and other game controllers. It also warns that specific DualSense features and wireless support vary by title. For Until Dawn, the PC materials describe haptics and adaptive triggers, but you should check the game’s connection instructions before assuming those effects work wirelessly.
Keyboard and mouse can make menu navigation and aiming familiar to PC players, while a controller may better suit an interaction-heavy cinematic horror game. Remapping is useful for accessibility and for players who dislike a developer’s default layout; it does not guarantee that every input device exposes every console effect.
Game availability: build a shortlist before choosing hardware
Do not choose a platform from a vague belief that one has all the horror games or always receives them first. The official PlayStation Store horror category is a live US sample of listings, and Sony’s PC catalog highlights selected PlayStation titles. Neither page is a comprehensive, permanent count of every horror game on either platform.

For each game you care about, verify:
- Whether the game has a PS5 version, a PC version, or only a backward-compatible console release.
- Whether the listing applies to your country and storefront.
- Which edition is included and whether downloadable content is sold separately.
- The PC launcher, account requirement, controller support, and published specifications.
- Whether the game supports your preferred display, audio device, and accessibility settings.
Availability changes as publishers update stores, delist products, or release new ports. A current store page is more reliable for a purchase decision than a platform-wide library claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Purchase, account, and save-transfer considerations
For PlayStation Studios releases, the console and PC editions are separate products. PlayStation states that buying a game on one platform does not transfer entitlement to the other, and saves cannot currently transfer between them. If you might switch platforms later, assume you will need to purchase the other edition and begin a new save unless the individual game explicitly documents a cross-save program.
Some PC titles require a PlayStation account for particular modes or features. The requirement is title-specific, so read the account section of the current PC listing before buying. A PC storefront account may also be required independently of a PlayStation account.

Refund rights and timing depend on the store and the transaction. Read the applicable policy before purchase; Steam publishes its current guidance in its Common Refund Questions. Do not assume that a PC purchase, console purchase, or digital add-on follows another store’s rules.

- Write down your must-play games. Check the current PS5 and PC listing for every title instead of starting with a platform stereotype.
- Record your existing hardware. On PC, note the processor, graphics card, VRAM, system RAM, SSD free space, monitor resolution, refresh rate, and operating system.
- Compare against the game’s target. Use minimum requirements for basic compatibility and recommended requirements for the resolution and frame-rate target you actually want.
- Rank the features you will notice. Decide whether DualSense effects and a living-room setup matter more than ultrawide output, unlocked frame rates, or granular graphics settings.
- Check account and edition details. Confirm launcher, PlayStation account requirements, multiplayer or mode restrictions, and whether your preferred controller works as expected.
- Calculate incremental cost. Include only the hardware, storage, display, controller, and game purchases you must add to your current setup. Avoid declaring a universal cheaper platform.
- Buy the version that satisfies the shortlist. Recheck the store page immediately before purchase because availability, prices, editions, and requirements can change.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every PC version has the same features
PC is a platform family, not one fixed specification. One game may include ultrawide support and extensive remapping while another may not. Read the individual feature list.
Reading a minimum requirement as a quality guarantee
Until Dawn‘s minimum specification targets an average 30 fps at 720p on Low settings, while its recommended tier targets an average 60 fps at 1080p on Medium. Those are different experiences. Match the tier to your desired output rather than treating “minimum” as a promise of high settings.
Assuming a controller reproduces every console effect on PC
DualSense can be recognized on PC, but wireless operation and feature support vary by title. Confirm the game’s instructions and connection requirements before buying a controller specifically for haptics or adaptive triggers.
Using a live store category as a library statistic
Store pages change and are filtered by region, platform, and current listings. Use them to verify a game you intend to play, not to claim that one platform has a permanently larger horror catalog.
Forgetting the save and entitlement boundary
A console purchase does not automatically unlock the PC edition, and the documented PlayStation Studios policy does not currently provide general save transfer between PS5 and PC. Plan for separate purchases and saves unless the game’s own page says otherwise.
When the answer can change
Your recommendation should be revisited when your circumstances change. A new graphics card, monitor, or PC upgrade can make a previously unsuitable PC port attractive. Conversely, moving to a television, wanting a simpler setup, or prioritizing a game’s PS5-only controller implementation can shift the balance toward PS5. New ports and patches can also alter requirements and feature lists, so treat this comparison as a decision method rather than a permanent ranking.
Final recommendation
Pick PS5 for predictable setup, couch-friendly play, and the console-specific features a supported horror game advertises. Pick PC when you already meet the game’s requirements and want display, frame-rate, graphics, or input flexibility. Start with your actual horror shortlist—using Until Dawn‘s documented PS5 and PC implementations as a concrete example—then verify the current regional listing, requirements, account rules, and edition before paying.
