You can inspect a suspicious link without visiting its destination. On a computer, hover over the link and read the URL preview, compare the real hostname with the organization you expected, and treat any mismatch as a warning. If the request is unexpected or urgent, verify it through a phone number, bookmark, or web address you already trust. Keep browser Safe Browsing enabled and never bypass a dangerous-site warning.
The safe procedure at a glance
A link’s visible wording, logo, or button text does not prove where it leads. The destination is the URL your browser reveals when you preview the link. Use this sequence before opening an unfamiliar link:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Preview the destination without following it. On a computer, place the pointer over the link and read the URL preview shown by the browser. Do not click merely to inspect it.
- Identify the actual hostname. Compare the domain in the preview with the organization or site you expected. Do not judge the link by its display text alone.
- Consider the message context. Unexpected urgency, requests for personal information, or an unfamiliar sender are reasons to stop and verify.
- Verify through an independent channel. Use a bookmark, type a known web address yourself, or contact the organization using a phone number or address you already know to be genuine.
- Respect browser warnings. If the browser displays a full-page red Safe Browsing warning, do not continue and do not enter personal information.
This method separates inspection from visitation: you examine the address first, then decide whether opening the destination is justified.

1. Preview the URL without opening the page
On a computer
Move the pointer over the hyperlink without pressing the mouse button. Most desktop browsers show the destination in a status area or small preview. Read the complete address that appears, including the hostname and any visible path. This is the check recommended in phishing guidance from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Do not click a link just to reveal its address. A click can load a phishing page, trigger a download, or begin a sign-in flow before you have evaluated the destination.
On a phone or tablet
Mobile interfaces vary by operating system, browser, and app. A long-press may display a link preview or offer a “copy link” action, but the exact controls are not universal. Use the preview or copy-link option if your device provides one, and avoid opening the destination simply to inspect it. If the message app gives you no safe way to examine the address, verify the request independently instead of tapping.
When you copy a link for inspection, do not paste it into the address bar and press go. Pasting is useful only if you can read the text without navigating to it. You can also paste it into a plain text note for comparison with the organization’s known address, then discard it if the request remains uncertain.

2. Read the real destination, not the link label
Why displayed text is insufficient
Messages can show reassuring words such as an organization’s name while linking somewhere else. A familiar logo or branded button is also not proof of authenticity. CISA advises being wary of hyperlinks and checking whether the link revealed on hover matches the text presented in the message. A mismatch can indicate that the link has been spoofed.
Compare the hostname with what you expected
Focus on the actual hostname in the preview. Ask whether it belongs to the organization named in the message and whether the spelling is exactly what you recognize. A destination that does not match the stated organization is a warning sign, especially when the message was unexpected.
Do not let the rest of the address distract you from the hostname. Long paths, tracking-looking sections, or familiar words elsewhere in the URL cannot make an unrelated hostname trustworthy. If you cannot confidently identify the expected site, stop and use an independent verification route.
Visible wording versus destination
| What you see in the message | What you should evaluate | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| A company name, logo, or “view account” button | The URL shown when you hover or preview the link | Do not rely on the label; compare the actual hostname |
| An urgent request to sign in or confirm information | Whether the request was expected and whether the destination belongs to the claimed organization | Verify through a known bookmark, address, or contact method |
| A link whose wording and destination do not match | The mismatch itself | Treat it as a phishing warning and do not open it |
Illustrative examples
Suppose a message says “Review your account at your bank,” but the preview shows a hostname you do not associate with that bank. The reassuring words do not change the destination; the mismatch is the reason to stop. Conversely, a message that displays a familiar organization name and shows a hostname you recognize still is not automatically trustworthy. You must ask whether you were expecting the message and whether the request is asking for sensitive information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe same principle applies to links labeled “invoice,” “delivery update,” “shared document,” or “security alert.” Those labels describe what the sender wants you to believe. Only the previewed destination tells you which site the click would request. Treat the label as a claim to verify, not as evidence that the destination is genuine.

3. Treat the message context as evidence
Unexpected messages deserve extra suspicion
An unsolicited message that asks you to click, sign in, pay, or provide personal information should not be evaluated by the link alone. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that phishing messages try to trick recipients into clicking links or opening attachments. An unexpected request is therefore evidence about the message’s trustworthiness, not merely background detail.
Urgency is a pressure tactic
Messages that demand immediate action, threaten account closure, or promise a reward are designed to reduce the time you spend checking. Slow the process down. Preview the destination, compare the hostname, and verify the request through a channel that did not come from the message.
Do not use the message to authenticate itself
A phone number, reply address, or web link inside a suspicious message may be controlled by the sender. Do not call the number provided in the message or use its link as your verification route. Find contact details from a known source instead.
Separate familiarity from expectation
A sender name can look familiar while the timing is wrong. Ask whether you recently opened the account, placed the order, requested the document, or expected the alert. If the answer is no, the request needs independent confirmation even when the branding looks polished. If the answer is yes, still inspect the destination before taking the requested action.
4. Verify independently before you visit
Use a known bookmark or type a known address
If the message claims to concern an account, open the browser using a bookmark you saved previously or enter the organization’s known web address yourself. Sign in or check notifications only after reaching the site through that independent route. This avoids giving the suspicious message control over the destination you visit.
Contact the organization through trusted details
For a payment request, account alert, delivery notice, or other consequential action, contact the organization using a phone number or web address you already know to be genuine. Do not use details supplied by the suspicious message. Ask whether the request is real and whether any action is required.
Choose the channel before you need it
A practical habit is to keep important organizations’ official addresses and contact details in a bookmark, account statement, or other record you obtained independently. Then a suspicious message cannot force you to search for support through its own link or phone number. The trusted route should come from a source you already had, not from the message you are testing.

5. Take browser Safe Browsing warnings seriously
What a red warning means in Chrome
Chrome describes a full-page red Safe Browsing warning as an indication that the site has been flagged as unsafe. The guidance is not to enter personal information. Do not click through the warning merely to see what is behind it.
A warning is a decision point: stop navigating, close the page, and use an independent route to reach the organization if you still need to perform a legitimate task. A page that looks professional after a warning is still not a safe place to submit information.
Do not bypass a dangerous-site warning
Browser warnings are part of the protection you are relying on when you inspect a link. Choosing an option to continue can expose you to the very site the browser identified as dangerous. The safer choice is to abandon the destination and verify the request elsewhere.
A warning is not the only reason to stop
The absence of a warning does not certify a page or a message. Safe Browsing checks are one protective signal; the hostname comparison, message context, and independent verification still matter. Stop for an unresolved mismatch or an unusual request even if the browser does not display a red page.
6. Understand Chrome’s Safe Browsing protection choices
Chrome’s guidance describes two relevant protection levels. They differ in both the breadth of checks and the information sent for those checks. These descriptions apply to Google’s Chrome product and may not describe every browser.
| Setting | Protection scope | Information Google says may be sent | Decision trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard protection | Checks for known dangers | Obfuscated portions of URLs are checked through privacy servers. When suspicious behavior is detected, Google says fuller URLs and page content may be sent. | Provides baseline protection with more limited routine sharing, while allowing additional data when suspicious behavior is detected. |
| Enhanced protection | Checks for known dangers and potential new dangers | Google says URLs and small samples of page content are sent for checks involving potential dangers. | Offers broader checking, including emerging threats, in exchange for sending more URL and page data for analysis. |
Google can change product behavior and setting descriptions. Review the current Safe Browsing documentation and the wording shown in your own Chrome settings before making a privacy or protection decision. The important distinction is that Enhanced protection covers potential new dangers and involves more data being sent for checks, while Standard protection focuses on known dangers and uses a different data-handling pattern.
How to make the setting choice
There is no single setting that removes the need to inspect a suspicious link. If you choose Enhanced protection, understand that Google says more URL and page data can be sent for checks. If you choose Standard protection, understand that its stated scope is narrower and centers on known dangers, with fuller data sent when suspicious behavior is detected. Read the current explanation in Chrome rather than relying on an old description or a setting name alone.

The preview does not match
Do not open the link. Treat the mismatch as a likely spoofing or phishing signal. Navigate through a known bookmark or contact the organization using trusted details if the request might be legitimate.
You cannot preview the link safely
Do not tap it just to find out where it goes. Use a known address, bookmark, or independent contact method. If none is available, leave the link unopened.
The browser shows a red warning
Stop. Do not enter personal information and do not bypass the warning. Close the destination and verify any claimed account or transaction through a trusted route.
The message asks only for a harmless-looking action
Do not lower your standards because the request appears routine. “View,” “confirm,” or “download” can still take you to an untrusted destination. Apply the same preview, hostname, context, and independent-verification steps before deciding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Common mistakes that make URL checks unsafe
- Trusting the visible link text: The label can differ from the actual destination.
- Clicking to inspect: Loading the page defeats the purpose of a pre-opening check.
- Checking only the logo: Graphics and familiar wording can be copied.
- Using the message’s phone number: A scammer can provide a fake support route.
- Reacting to urgency: Pressure encourages action before verification.
- Continuing past a warning: A red Safe Browsing page is a signal to stop, not a challenge to override.
- Assuming a matching label proves safety: Even a plausible-looking destination must be considered alongside the message context.
- Searching from the suspicious message: Using a supplied link or contact detail means the message still controls your verification path.
- Stopping after one positive clue: A familiar hostname does not cancel an unexpected request or an unusually urgent demand.
- Trying several clicks “just to see”: Repeated testing increases exposure instead of improving certainty. One unresolved warning is enough to stop.
9. A reusable pre-click checklist
- Have I previewed the destination without clicking?
- What is the actual hostname?
- Does that hostname match the organization I expected, exactly enough to recognize it?
- Does the link wording match the destination shown by the browser?
- Was this message expected?
- Is it creating urgency or asking for personal information?
- Can I verify the request through a bookmark, a known web address, or trusted contact details?
- Has the browser displayed a Safe Browsing warning?
- If there is a warning or unresolved mismatch, have I stopped instead of continuing?
A short version to remember
Preview, compare, verify, stop when warned. Preview the address without following it. Compare the actual hostname with the organization you expected. Verify the request through a route you already trust. Stop if the browser warns you, the destination does not match, or you cannot confirm the request.
10. What this method can and cannot establish
Previewing a URL can reveal where a link is directed and expose a mismatch between the displayed wording and the destination. It cannot, by itself, prove that a site is safe or that a message is genuine. A destination that appears to match the expected organization still needs to be judged in context, particularly when the message is unexpected or requests sensitive information.
Likewise, Safe Browsing is a protective signal, not a replacement for judgment. Chrome’s settings have different coverage and data-handling behavior, and browser interfaces can change. Keep the protection feature enabled, read the current setting descriptions, and use independent verification whenever a request feels unusual.

11. The safest default
When a link is unexpected, mismatched, impossible to preview safely, or blocked by a browser warning, do not open it. Reach the alleged organization through a route you already trust. The few extra seconds spent checking the real destination and confirming the request are safer than allowing a suspicious message to choose the site, contact details, and next action for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I click a suspicious link just to see where it goes?
No. Clicking loads the destination before you have evaluated it and may begin a sign-in flow or another action. Hover over it on a computer, or use a device’s link-preview or copy-link option if available.
What if the link text and the previewed URL do not match?
Treat the mismatch as a phishing warning and do not open the link. If the request might be legitimate, reach the organization through a bookmark, a web address you type yourself, or contact details you already know are genuine.
Is a matching hostname proof that a message is safe?
No. A matching hostname removes one warning sign but does not prove that the message is genuine. Consider whether the message was expected, whether it creates urgency, and whether it asks for personal information.
How can I check a link on a phone?
Mobile controls differ by device, browser, and app. A long-press may show a preview or a copy-link option. Use those controls without opening the destination; if none is available, verify the request independently instead of tapping.
What should I do if Chrome shows a full-page red Safe Browsing warning?
Stop navigating. Do not enter personal information and do not choose an option to continue. Close the page and verify any legitimate account or transaction through a trusted route.
Should I call the phone number included in a suspicious message?
No. The number may be controlled by the sender. Find the organization’s phone number or web address from a source you already trust and use that independent channel.
What is the difference between Chrome Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing?
Google describes Standard protection as checking for known dangers, using obfuscated URL portions through privacy servers and sending fuller data when suspicious behavior is detected. Enhanced protection also checks for potential new dangers and sends URLs and small samples of page content for relevant checks. Review Chrome’s current settings explanation because product behavior can change.
What if I cannot confirm the request independently?
Leave the link unopened. You do not need to prove that it is malicious before refusing to follow it; unresolved uncertainty is enough reason to stop.
The Bottom Line
Preview the link without opening it, read the actual hostname, compare it with the organization you expected, and treat mismatches or urgent requests as warnings. Verify through a bookmark or contact route you already trust, and never bypass a browser’s dangerous-site warning.
