PS5 Graphics Settings to Check When Using QSSR Upscaling

QSSR is a game-specific graphics option on standard PS5. Find it in a supported game’s menu, then check resolution, VRR, 120 Hz, and HDR separately in PS5 Video Output.

To use Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), look for the option in a supported game’s graphics or display menu—not in the PS5’s system-level video output settings. Then check the console’s output signal and display features separately. QSSR is title-specific, and its visual and performance effects vary by game and graphics mode.

Where to find the QSSR setting on PS5

Open the graphics or display options in a game that supports QSSR and look for its QSSR option. Sony describes it as an additional in-game graphics choice; menu labels and available modes can differ by title. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games being patched to offer QSSR on PS5. Its announcement does not provide a complete compatibility list or a schedule for other games, so check your installed game version and its menu rather than assuming QSSR is available everywhere. QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling option for standard PS5, developed from Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. Sony describes it as a streamlined neural-network implementation designed for PS5; PSSR remains Sony’s higher-end upscaling offering on PS5 Pro. Neither QSSR nor PSSR should be confused with the console’s output-resolution setting.

Which PS5 Video Output settings should you check?

These settings control the signal sent to the connected screen. Sony’s guide does not describe them as QSSR controls.

  1. Open the output menu: On PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. You can view the current signal and change output settings there. The console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution, according to Sony’s PS5 resolution guide.
  2. Start with Resolution set to Automatic: Sony says this selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. If you are troubleshooting, check the current signal and make sure the selected resolution is supported by your display. Changing this setting does not enable QSSR.
  3. Use 120 Hz output and VRR only when appropriate: Enable these features when the game and display support them and you want to use them. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV and game. If applying VRR to unsupported games causes unexpected behavior, Sony advises turning off Apply to Unsupported Games.
  4. Choose HDR output deliberately: On When Supported keeps non-HDR games and apps in SDR. Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output. HDR is a display-output choice, not a QSSR control.

Is “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” the QSSR toggle?

No. Sony documents Enhance PSSR Image Quality for certain PSSR-compatible games, and says it is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. It is not documented as the QSSR switch for standard PS5. For QSSR, check the supported game’s graphics or display menu.

What to compare with QSSR on and off

To judge the option in your own game, keep the graphics mode and scene the same, then switch QSSR on and off. Look at both image quality and how the game runs:

  • Stability in motion: Watch moving edges and detailed areas as the camera moves for changes in clarity or distracting artifacts.
  • Frame pacing and performance: Notice whether movement feels consistent in the mode you are using. Do not assume QSSR guarantees a higher frame rate or a fixed performance cost.

Sony says QSSR is intended to improve image detail and stability. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said it adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environmental detail with temporal stability. These are developer descriptions, not independent measurements. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announcement

Reporting by TechRadar on Digital Foundry hands-on testing described a stronger image-quality improvement in Marvel’s Wolverine than in Ghost of Yōtei, with performance costs depending on mode and test conditions. That variation is why a result from one game or scene should not be treated as a general QSSR benchmark.

If 4K or 120 Hz output is not working

Troubleshoot the signal path separately from QSSR. Sony advises checking that the display supports the feature, using an appropriate HDMI 2.1 port where applicable, updating the display firmware, and checking the cable. For this output troubleshooting, Sony recommends the cable included with PS5 or an Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable. The included cable may already be suitable; a different cable is not a requirement for QSSR and does not enable or improve its processing. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide
