Yes—an experimental project called PS5X has demonstrated several PlayStation 5 game builds booting on Xbox Series X hardware. The test used Xbox Developer Mode and a port of the open-source KytyPS5 emulator. It does not show that Xbox owners can broadly play PS5 games, nor that a stable public release is available.
What PS5X is—and what was demonstrated
VideoCardz reported on September 21, 2026, that developer Devran Cosmo Uenal ported KytyPS5 to Microsoft’s console under the name PS5X. The demonstration ran on an Xbox Series X in Developer Mode, rather than the normal retail Xbox environment.

The developer’s own project description likewise presents PS5X as an experimental Xbox port of KytyPS5 for running PS5 homebrew and game backups. That wording describes a research project, not a consumer product or an officially supported Xbox feature.

All four reportedly recognized Xbox controller input. Some also produced working audio. The clearest performance example was Quake II, which the report described as running at approximately 25–45 frames per second. That range comes from the cited footage and reporting; it is not an independent benchmark.

Reported results by game
| PS5 build | Booted in the demonstration | Controller input | Audio | Performance observation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GEX Trilogy | Yes, according to VideoCardz | Xbox controller input recognized | Some titles had working audio; the report does not identify a title-specific result | No title-specific frame-rate figure reported |
| Hellboy: Web of Wyrd | Yes, according to VideoCardz | Xbox controller input recognized | Some titles had working audio; the report does not identify a title-specific result | No title-specific frame-rate figure reported |
| Marvel Cosmic Invasion | Yes, according to VideoCardz | Xbox controller input recognized | Some titles had working audio; the report does not identify a title-specific result | No title-specific frame-rate figure reported |
| Quake II | Yes, according to VideoCardz | Xbox controller input recognized | Audio status not separately quantified in the report | Approximately 25–45 FPS in the reported footage |
“Booted” is the important limitation: it means the named builds were shown starting and running to some extent. It does not establish that each game is completeable, stable for long sessions, graphically accurate, or representative of other PS5 software.
Why this does not turn Xbox into a PS5
KytyPS5’s repository describes the emulator as early-stage and warns that compatibility is limited and behavior may change substantially between builds. An emulator that can launch four selected builds is therefore very different from a compatibility layer covering the PS5 library.
- Small sample: only four named game builds are covered by the report.
- Unclear stability: the demonstration does not establish consistent playability, save support, frame pacing or completion.
- Unverified release status: the available reporting does not establish a public Xbox build, ordinary installation procedure or maintained compatibility list.
- Special environment: the tests used Xbox Developer Mode, not a standard retail-console workflow.
- No independent testing: the 25–45 FPS figure and other observations come from the cited report and footage, not a separate laboratory test.
Consequently, the accurate conclusion is that PS5 software has been experimentally demonstrated on Xbox Series X—not that Xbox owners now have a practical replacement for a PlayStation 5.

Developer Mode and availability
Developer Mode is central to the demonstration. The project was not described as running through the ordinary Xbox dashboard or as an approved Microsoft feature. Activating or using that environment can involve separate Microsoft requirements and restrictions, but the cited material does not provide a PS5X installation guide or confirm that a downloadable public package exists.
Readers should not infer that owning an Xbox Series X alone grants access to PS5X. No supported consumer setup, store listing, subscription, controller accessory or storage recommendation was established for this experiment. Availability may change as the developer publishes updates, so any claim that a stable build can be downloaded should be tied to a later primary-source announcement.

The KytyPS5 project says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software and tells users to use game files obtained legally. That is a project policy, not a universal legal ruling. Rules covering emulation, backups, firmware and copyrighted game data differ by jurisdiction and by how files were obtained.

Anyone investigating the project should verify the law where they live, use only files they are entitled to possess, and avoid downloads that redistribute commercial games or proprietary system software. The demonstration itself does not change those obligations.
What to watch for next
The most meaningful future evidence would be a primary-source Xbox build, documented setup steps, repeatable testing across multiple versions and a maintained compatibility list. Those details would show whether PS5X has moved beyond a research demonstration. Until then, the September 2026 footage is best understood as a technical proof of possibility: an Xbox Series X can boot selected PS5 builds through a modified KytyPS5 emulator, but the project remains experimental and narrowly demonstrated.
