Season of Discovery experiments inside the Vanilla framework, expansion-era Classic moves the setting forward, and Blizzard’s announced World of Warcraft: Forever aims to add a large amount of new content without abandoning the original game’s pace or social design.
Classic Era preserves Vanilla; it does not expand it
Blizzard Support describes Classic Era as the original World of Warcraft experience. Its rules, zones, progression and content are intended to remain a fixed snapshot of original Azeroth. That stability is the attraction: leveling is deliberate, the world matters, and players rely heavily on local communities and group cooperation. It also explains why a veteran can feel that the game needs a new direction without wanting modern conveniences or a faster endgame.

Season of Discovery occupies a different position. Blizzard describes it as the original experience with new content added, making it an experiment within a Classic framework rather than a preservation project. New abilities and discoveries can change how classes and encounters work, so it is better suited to players who want Vanilla atmosphere with ongoing surprises.
Blizzard’s current mode overview distinguishes these experiences from expansion-era progression. The differences matter because characters, rules and progression paths should not be assumed to carry between versions. See the official mode and version guide for Blizzard’s current classifications.

Why Forever is the clearest answer to the request for more Vanilla
Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft: Forever as a long-term project that continues exploring and expanding original Azeroth. It is not described as another seasonal reset or as an expansion that replaces the old world. Because launch is still in the future, the following are announced plans rather than released features.
- More than 1,000 new quests spread across the level 1–60 journey.
- Nine new dungeons.
- Two planned raids: Hyjal Summit and the Barrow Deeps.
- One 15-versus-15 battleground, the Darkspear Islands.
- New and reimagined regions and a playable Skyborne race.
- Class and ability updates, plus Legacy progression for leveling and alternate characters.
- Player campsite crafting and optional transmog.
- Classic and modern visual presets, HD and SD character models, and official gamepad support.
Blizzard also says Forever will retain no flying mounts and no level scaling. Those limits are significant: they keep travel, exploration and character growth closer to the original rhythm instead of compressing the world around the player.

The design test is the journey
Blizzard’s stated principles are “approachable and familiar,” “the world as the main character,” “the journey before the destination,” and protecting and nurturing social experiences. Its panel recap puts the intended trade-off plainly: “That means leveling remains just as important as endgame, effort continues to matter, and rewards come from playing the game: leveling up, running dungeons, making friends, exploring the world, and taking on new challenges together.” Read the full Forever panel recap for the announced feature set and rationale.
In an October 8, 2026 interview, Blizzard told TechRadar Gaming: “The philosophy is largely to take the original ‘vanilla’ WoW world and building on top of it in a way that stays true to the core design, pacing, and tone of the original game.” The grammatical roughness is part of the published quotation; the substance is the important point. Forever is being framed as additions layered onto Vanilla’s foundation, not a wholesale modernization. The interview is available at TechRadar Gaming.
How the announced content could address Classic Era’s limits
A longer leveling game
More than 1,000 quests, new regions and nine dungeons would give players reasons to keep exploring after they have exhausted familiar leveling routes. The important qualification is that these are publisher-announced counts, not an independent measure of quality or replay value.
More endgame without abandoning the world
Hyjal Summit, the Barrow Deeps and the Darkspear Islands add raid and battleground goals while remaining tied to the original continents. That could provide fresh group objectives for established characters without requiring a move to an entirely different expansion setting.
Rank #4
- Enter a world divided
- Recruit Allied races
- Plunder Uncharted islands
- Storm the warfronts
- Includes level 110 character Boost
Modern options with deliberate boundaries
Gamepad support, visual presets, updated models, optional transmog and campsite crafting address convenience and customization. No flying mounts and no level scaling are equally deliberate refusals: players would still need to travel through the world and outgrow challenges through progression.
Which path fits your reason for leaving Classic Era?
Choose Classic Era if preservation is the point
Stay with Classic Era when you value the original quest routes, class limits and social pace more than novelty. Its lack of new systems is a feature for players who want a stable reference version of Vanilla.
Best Value
- Master the Path of the Monk - Learn the mystic powers of the Monk, World of Warcraft's newest playable class. Destroy foes with the Windwalker's devastating attacks, replenish allies with the Mistweaver's spiritual energies, and shrug off enormous damage with the Brewmaster's unyielding strength.
- Battle to level 90 - Ascend to new heights of power as you explore the verdant reaches of the Jade Forest, war with the terrible Yaungol on Kun-Lai Summit, and unlock the secrets of the Mogu'shan Vaults.
- Unleash the Mighty Pandaren - Set out as a member of the enigmatic Pandaren -- World of Warcraft's first neutral race -- and join the ranks of either the Horde or Alliance as you enter the conflict brewing on Pandaria's shores.
- Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.
Choose Season of Discovery if experimentation matters most
Season of Discovery is the middle ground: it keeps the original setting while changing what classes and activities can do. Expect a more experimental experience than Classic Era, not a permanent replacement for it.
Choose an expansion progression realm for a different era
Mists of Pandaria Classic and Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary offer later expansion settings and progression structures. They answer “I want more World of Warcraft” rather than specifically “I want more Vanilla.” Remember that the Burning Crusade Anniversary transfer window to Classic Era has already closed.
Wait for Forever if you want new Vanilla-era content
Forever is the option most directly aligned with the argument that Classic’s foundation is worth keeping but its content should grow. Its announced launch is November 4, 2026, with beta beginning September 17. Until it releases, feature counts and design promises remain plans, not hands-on evidence.

What Blizzard’s development comments reveal
PC Gamer reports that associate production director Clay Stone said the project grew from an initial internal pitch of four dungeons to six and then nine. He also described Season of Discovery as a learning opportunity for making content in the Vanilla-era space. This is interview context rather than a formal specification, but it indicates that Blizzard is treating Classic-inspired development as an iterative design problem. The report appears at PC Gamer.
The verdict
Classic Era does not need to become faster, larger or more convenient to remain valuable. It needs a clearly separate place for players who want the same world’s values with new journeys. Season of Discovery supplies experimentation, expansion-era Classic supplies a different historical chapter, and Forever is Blizzard’s announced attempt to build outward from Vanilla itself. That makes Forever the most relevant answer to “something new,” while Classic Era remains the right choice for anyone whose priority is preservation rather than change.
