There is no universal PS5 upgrade price. PlayStation makes the decision game by game: an eligible PS4 title may offer a free digital PS5 upgrade, a paid upgrade, or a promotion available only for a limited time. Open the game hub or PlayStation Store listing for the exact title and read the offer shown there before assuming you can upgrade.
Your ownership type and console also matter. A physical PS4 disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive and the original disc inserted every time you play. An eligible digital PS4 purchase can be upgraded on either PS5 model. PS4 games claimed through PlayStation Plus are generally excluded unless that game’s terms explicitly say otherwise.

The short answer: do you have to pay?
Sometimes. PlayStation’s official wording is: “Depending on the game, this upgrade may occur at no additional cost, may require a purchase, and may be available for a limited time.” That means the upgrade policy belongs to the individual game, not to the PS4-to-PS5 transition as a whole. The price and deadline displayed on the title’s game hub are the authoritative terms.

An upgrade normally gives you the digital PS5 version. It is not a way to turn a PS4 disc into a permanently usable PS5 disc, and it does not make every PS4 game automatically compatible with every PS5 edition. Check the offer while signed in to the account that owns the game, because eligibility is tied to that entitlement and, for discs, to the disc’s region.

Which upgrade path applies to your copy?
Start by identifying how you obtained the PS4 game. The following table separates the rules that are easy to confuse.

These rules come from PlayStation’s support guidance and apply only where the title has an active eligible offer. A game’s store page can change its price, end a promotion or remove an offer.
Physical disc upgrades: the disc-drive requirement
Why a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use this path
A PS4 disc is the ownership check for a disc-based upgrade. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot read the disc to validate the license. You therefore need a PS5 model with a disc drive to claim and play a disc-based digital PS5 upgrade. The disc does not become optional after installation.
The region rule
PlayStation states that the PS4 disc must be for the same country or region as the account used on the console. A disc imported from another market may fail to show the expected offer even when the game has an upgrade program. If the account and disc regions do not match, contact the retailer or publisher for region-specific guidance rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
What you receive
The upgrade is a digital PS5 entitlement. You still insert the original PS4 disc each time you play, including after restarting the console or switching users. Keep the disc available until you finish using the PS5 version; deleting the PS4 installation does not remove the disc check.
Digital PS4 upgrades: the two-console path
An eligible digital PS4 purchase can be upgraded on either PS5 hardware configuration. The PS5 with a disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition follow the same account-based entitlement check because no physical media is involved. The key question is whether that exact digital game has an active PS5 offer and what terms it displays.

Do not assume that owning a PS4 digital license guarantees a free PS5 copy. Open the PS5 version’s game hub while signed in to the purchasing account. If the listing shows a price, that is the amount required for the upgrade; if it shows a free claim, follow the on-screen redemption flow. A limited-time offer can disappear even though you continue to own the PS4 version.
How to claim an upgrade from a PS4 disc
Use this sequence for a physical copy:
- Sign in on a disc-drive PS5. Use the PlayStation account that should receive the upgrade.
- Insert the PS4 game disc. Leave it in the drive while checking the offer.
- Open the game hub. Highlight the game on the home screen or find it in Game Library.
- Select the upgrade offer. Read whether it is free, paid or limited-time, and check any edition or content restrictions.
- Confirm the displayed terms. If a price is shown, purchase at that price; do not rely on an old promotion or a price quoted elsewhere.
- Download the digital PS5 version. Wait for the installation to complete before launching it.
- Keep the disc inserted for play. The console uses it to verify your license every time you start the digital PS5 game.
If no offer appears, verify the disc’s country or region against the account, confirm that the title is one of the eligible editions, and check the current PlayStation Store listing. A PS4 disc that was borrowed, rented or obtained for a different account cannot supply your account with an upgrade entitlement.
How to claim an upgrade from a digital PS4 purchase
- Sign in to the purchasing account on either PS5 model.
- Find the PS5 version. Use Search or open PlayStation Store, then select the title’s PS5 game hub.
- Review the offer panel. Confirm that the listing refers to the PS5 version and note whether the upgrade is free, paid or time-limited.
- Claim or purchase the upgrade. Follow the displayed checkout or free-download instructions.
- Download the PS5 version. Choose the PS5 edition when the console presents multiple versions.
Because this path is digital, no disc is required during play. The entitlement remains associated with the account that owns or claims it, so changing accounts will not transfer the upgrade.
How to choose the PS4 or PS5 version when both are installed
Cross-generation games can leave both versions visible, and launching the wrong one can make it seem as though the upgrade did not work. PlayStation’s Game Library controls let you select deliberately:

- Open the game’s options menu.
- Select the PS4 or PS5 version.
The PS4 edition is labeled “PS4” next to the title. The PS5 edition displays the title without that label. Check this label before downloading and again before launching if both versions are present. Saves, add-ons and performance features can differ by edition, so use the PS5 build when you want the upgraded version’s features.
Free, paid and time-limited offers: how to read the fine print
Free does not mean universal
A free offer applies only to the specific title, edition and account conditions shown on its listing. It does not establish a platform-wide policy. A publisher can provide a free upgrade for one game while charging for another in the same series.

A paid upgrade is title-specific
If the game hub displays a purchase price, that is the current requirement for that account and region. The price can differ by edition or change after a promotion ends. There is no reliable single amount to quote for all PS4 games.
Limited-time offers can expire
Some upgrade rights are available only during a stated period. Claim the offer before the displayed deadline if you want it; owning the PS4 version does not guarantee that a temporary promotion will return. Always read the live terms rather than relying on a launch announcement.

A game redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not automatically treated like a purchased digital copy. PlayStation says PS4 games obtained through a Plus benefit are generally ineligible unless otherwise indicated for that title. Before spending time troubleshooting, open the game’s current listing and look for an explicit Plus upgrade entitlement. If none is shown, the subscription claim alone should not be expected to unlock the PS5 version.

In its November 9, 2020 “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ,” PlayStation said more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible with PS5. That was a launch-era statement, not a current compatibility census or a promise that every compatible game has a PS5-native upgrade. Compatibility can mean the PS4 version runs through backward compatibility; an upgrade is a separate, game-specific digital PS5 entitlement.
The same 2020 FAQ cited the PS4 versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure as examples whose PS5 digital upgrades were available at no additional cost at that time. Those examples document the policy in 2020, not a guarantee that the same offer, price or deadline remains active now. Check the current game hub before making a purchase decision.

Troubleshooting when the upgrade does not appear
The offer is missing for a disc
- Confirm that the console has a disc drive and that the PS4 disc is inserted.
- Check that the disc’s country or region matches the PlayStation account.
- Make sure you are viewing the correct game hub and edition.
- Connect the console to the internet so the Store can retrieve the current offer.
- Review the live listing for a deadline or an eligibility exclusion.
The Store shows the wrong version
- Open the title’s options in Game Library and select the version labeled without “PS4.”
- Check that the download page names the PS5 edition before confirming.
- If both versions are installed, launch from the PS5 entry rather than the PS4 entry.
A Plus copy is not recognized
Verify how the game entered your library. A Plus benefit is generally excluded unless the title says otherwise; do not assume that restoring licenses or reinstalling will convert it into a purchased entitlement.

Keep the same eligible disc inserted. The digital PS5 upgrade still requires the disc as the license check, and a different regional disc may not satisfy the account’s requirement.
A practical decision checklist before you pay
- Identify ownership: physical disc, purchased digital license or PlayStation Plus claim.
- Check hardware: a disc-drive PS5 is mandatory for a disc upgrade; either PS5 model works for an eligible digital purchase.
- Open the live game hub: verify the exact PS5 edition and offer shown today.
- Read conditions: price, deadline, edition restrictions, account region and any requirement to retain the disc.
- Confirm the version: choose the PS5 entry, which appears without the “PS4” label, before downloading.
- Keep proof of entitlement: retain the disc for physical upgrades and use the purchasing account for digital ones.
This checklist prevents the most common mistake: treating a historical free-upgrade example or another game’s policy as a promise for the title you own.
What the rules mean in common situations
You own a PS4 disc and a PS5 Digital Edition
You cannot use that disc-based upgrade path on the Digital Edition. You would need access to a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc would still be required for every play session.
You bought a PS4 game digitally and have a Digital Edition
You can use the digital upgrade path if the title is eligible. Open the PS5 game hub while signed in to the purchasing account and follow the displayed free or paid offer.
You claimed the game through Plus and see a PS5 listing
The listing alone does not prove eligibility. Check its specific terms; Plus-claimed PS4 games are generally excluded unless the title explicitly grants an upgrade.
You bought both editions
Use Game Library’s version selector. Choose the entry without the “PS4” label to download or launch the PS5 edition.
Bottom line for PS4 owners
Paying for a PS5 version is neither automatic nor universal. The decisive evidence is the current offer on the game’s PlayStation Store or game hub. Digital PS4 purchases can qualify on either PS5 model; physical-disc upgrades require a disc-drive PS5, a matching account region and the original disc inserted every time. PlayStation Plus claims need separate, title-specific confirmation. Treat 2020 examples and compatibility statistics as historical context, not as today’s entitlement terms.
