Short answer: A PS5 exploit is firmware-specific, not a permanent jailbreak switch. A technique reported for one system-software build can stop working after Sony changes a vulnerable component or adds a mitigation. As of September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that the Relapse jailbreak covered firmware 7.00 through 13.60, but that dated range is not a guarantee for every payload, homebrew application, game or newer firmware.
For most owners, installing Sony’s latest official update is the safer choice because it brings security fixes, current online and game compatibility, and normal support. Preserving an older firmware may appeal to people researching community exploits, but it can mean losing access to newer releases and services, and Sony does not promise a supported way to return to an older vulnerable state.

What a PS5 exploit actually depends on
A PS5 exploit is a chain of technical weaknesses that lets code run outside the console’s intended boundaries. The chain can involve an entry point, a userland bug, a kernel vulnerability, firmware-specific memory offsets, payloads and mitigations that differ between system-software releases. Breaking any one link can make the same public technique unusable.

A report must identify the exact firmware, the required entry point, the payload version and the limits of what the chain can do. Some chains provide research access without delivering a complete, persistent modification. Others may run only after a repeatable trigger and may not support every homebrew application. A userland-plus-kernel path is not automatically a full system compromise; the 2026 Hardwear.io security presentation describes continuing work on attack-surface reduction, exploit mitigations and stronger hardware-security barriers.

When Sony updates the system, it may patch the original bug, change memory layout, strengthen a mitigation or alter another dependency. A payload built around old offsets can then crash or simply fail. Compatibility claims therefore have a date attached to them and should never be treated as a promise for a different build.
What firmware range has been reported?
Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that the Relapse jailbreak supported PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60. This is a secondary technology-news report of a community project, not a standing guarantee from Sony, and it does not establish that every feature works across the entire range.

The reported range is best read as a dated snapshot. Even within 7.00–13.60, a particular payload may fail, require a specific trigger or lack support for a game or application. Conversely, a later firmware could eventually receive a different disclosure; there is no reliable rule that “older is always exploitable” or “newer is always safe.”

Should you update or preserve an older firmware?
The choice is a trade-off rather than a universal recommendation. Updating follows Sony’s supported path and reduces exposure to known security problems. Staying put can preserve a firmware state that community researchers are targeting, but it freezes the console’s software environment and may create practical restrictions.

Before deciding, check the exact version under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Record the full number, not just a major release, because exploit offsets and reported support can differ between closely related builds. Also list the games, online services and applications you need. A console kept offline for research has different priorities from a primary system used for multiplayer, purchases and new releases.
What Sony officially recommends
Sony Interactive Entertainment says: “SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” Its support guidance also says: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Those instructions address both security and the risk of corrupt or altered system software.

- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Enable automatic updates, or choose Update System Software when an update is offered.
- Keep the console powered and connected until the process finishes. Do not interrupt a restart or remove power while installation is in progress.
The wording of menu items can vary slightly by system-software release, but the path above is Sony’s documented workflow. Use only files obtained through Sony’s official support channel when the console requests a manual update.

How to reinstall official PS5 software from USB
A USB drive is a recovery accessory for Sony’s official reinstall process, not an exploit device. Reinstallation erases the console’s data, so back up saved data and understand the reset before proceeding.
- Download the official PS5 reinstallation file from Sony’s support page.
- Format a compatible USB drive as required by Sony’s instructions, then create a folder named
PS5and anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Save the downloaded file in the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not rename it with an extra extension. - Safely eject the drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
- Turn the console off completely. Start Safe Mode by holding the power button and releasing it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Follow the on-screen prompts and leave the console connected to power until the reinstall completes.
Sony warns against update data from another source or another method. A random PUP, modified package or “one-click jailbreak” download can be malicious, damaged or incompatible. It can also leave the console unable to boot normally. Do not treat a website that promises a free exploit as an authority for system files.
What happened with the October 2026 patch report?
PlayStation LifeStyle reported that Sony rolled out system software 26.06-14.10.00 on October 1, 2026 and that the revision appeared to address recent jailbreak activity. The available reporting did not include a Sony primary changelog confirming an exploit-specific fix. The careful conclusion is therefore limited: the update may have changed conditions relevant to the reported activity, but it has not been established that it patches every exploit or blocks every payload.

Can you go back to an older PS5 firmware?
Sony supports updating and, when necessary, reinstalling official system software through its documented procedures. It does not promise a consumer downgrade that restores an older vulnerable state. A reinstall is not a time machine: using the current official package does not recreate an earlier firmware environment.
Attempts to force a downgrade with altered files, hardware modifications or unverified tools can cause boot failures, data loss and service problems. They can also violate the conditions Sony uses to assess warranty or repair eligibility. Treat reversibility as one-way for planning purposes: once you update, assume you may not be able to return to the previous exploit-compatible build.
Warranty, service and security consequences of modification
Sony warns that unofficial update files and modified consoles may not operate correctly. It also warns that alteration can affect warranty coverage or eligibility for repair services. That risk is separate from whether a community chain technically runs: a successful exploit does not make an altered console a supported product.

- Security: Unofficial payloads can include hidden code, persistence mechanisms or data-stealing components.
- Stability: A mismatched offset or corrupted package can cause crashes, boot loops or loss of saved data.
- Online access: Software or account changes can interfere with online services and may require returning to an officially supported state.
- Support: Service technicians may require official software before troubleshooting, and modification can affect eligibility.
- Game compatibility: New releases and patches can require a later firmware than the one preserved for research.
A safe decision checklist for owners
- Record the full system-software version in Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Decide whether your primary requirement is security and compatibility or research into a specific community report.
- Check the exact game, patch and online-service requirements you rely on before delaying an update.
- If you update, use only the built-in Settings path or Sony’s official USB-reinstall instructions.
- Never run a random PUP, modified update package or browser “one-click jailbreak.”
- Back up saved data before any reinstall and assume that reinstalling will erase local content.
- If an update fails, stop experimenting with unofficial files and use Sony’s Safe Mode recovery steps or contact PlayStation Support.
Do not publish or follow bypass instructions from an unverified source simply because it claims support for your firmware. Compatibility lists become stale, and a download that combines an exploit with an unknown payload creates a security decision in addition to a firmware decision.

What to do when an official update fails
The update will not download
Confirm the console has a stable network connection, restart it and retry from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If the service is temporarily unavailable, wait and use Sony’s support status information rather than downloading a package from a third-party mirror.
The update stops or reports corrupted data
Delete the failed download if the console offers that option, restart, and retry. For a manual recovery, use the official file, the exact PS5/UPDATE folder structure and the filename PS5UPDATE.PUP, then enter Safe Mode and select the appropriate update or reinstall option.
The console will not start normally
Power it off, hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode, connect the controller by USB and follow Sony’s recovery menu. Choose reinstall only when you understand that it resets the console. If the official procedure does not resolve the problem, contact PlayStation Support instead of trying modified firmware.
How vulnerability reporting fits into the picture
Sony operates a product-security process that includes coordinated vulnerability reporting and a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. These programs are intended to let security researchers report flaws responsibly so they can be investigated and fixed. A public exploit report can therefore be followed by mitigations or a system update, but the existence of a bug-bounty program does not tell owners whether a particular console is exploitable.
For owners, the practical rule is simple: identify the exact firmware, treat community compatibility as dated and conditional, and use official software when reliability, security, online access or support matters more than preserving a research target.
