Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to use PS5 or supported PS4 game discs, watch movie discs, or keep the option to use physical media. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you expect to download your games and do not need an optical drive. Sony lists 1TB of storage for the disc-equipped PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition; those are listed capacities, not measures of usable space or how many games each console holds.
What actually differs between the PS5 disc and Digital Edition?
The main difference is access to optical media. Sony says its disc-equipped PS5 plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. The Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and uses downloaded games from PlayStation Store. The disc model can still be used for digital purchases, so choosing it does not lock you into physical games.

Sony’s current US lineup lists the disc-equipped PS5 at 1TB and the Digital Edition at 825GB. These are the capacities Sony lists; they do not establish usable storage or a guaranteed number of installed games. Sony’s PS5 buying page has the current lineup details.

Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you use physical media
- You own PS5 or supported PS4 games on Blu-ray discs and want to play them.
- You prefer to buy or borrow games on disc.
- You want the option to watch movie discs, including Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, or DVD, using a compatible drive.
Sony confirms disc playback, but the cited product information does not establish resale value, lending rights, offline access in every situation, or guaranteed savings from buying physical games. Treat those as separate questions rather than automatic benefits of choosing a disc console.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Choose the Digital Edition if you are comfortable downloading games
If you do not need game or movie discs, the Digital Edition provides the download-based route Sony describes. Check the current local price and listed storage before deciding which console is better value; prices and bundles can vary, and the listed capacities alone do not determine how many games you can keep installed.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition later?
Sony sells a removable Disc Drive for specific slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro, but it is not a universal upgrade for every Digital Edition. The compatibility information identifies Digital Edition CFI-2000/CFI-2100 slim groups and PS5 Pro CFI-7000; Sony’s setup instructions describe CFI-2000/7000 groups. Check the exact model number printed on your console and consult Sony’s current compatibility information before purchasing.

The drive is a separate accessory. Sony lists support for PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. An internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. See Sony’s Disc Drive compatibility page and Disc Drive setup instructions.

PS5 Pro is a separate performance choice, not a disc-versus-digital answer. Sony lists it with 2TB of storage and enhanced visual features in supported games; those features vary by game. Its compatible removable disc drive is sold separately. Consider Pro if its supported-game visual enhancements or listed capacity matter to you, then decide separately whether you need disc playback.

A future change to new game releases
Sony’s current US buying page says newly released PlayStation games will be available digitally only from January 2028, and that discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is Sony’s stated future policy on its current page; it does not, by itself, establish further details about release formats or changes beyond that wording.
