AI coding agents can assist across the software development lifecycle—not only while code is being written. They can help shape tasks, make changes, run tests, prepare pull requests, support security work, and propose follow-up fixes after release. Their usefulness depends on the tools and permissions they receive; their output still needs verification and human review.
Where coding agents can contribute
An agent’s role is best understood as a set of bounded tasks within an existing engineering process, rather than as a replacement for the process itself. GitHub’s documentation on coding agents describes work spanning repository issues and pull requests, while its lifecycle guidance illustrates how agents can be used at several stages.

Planning and task definition
An agent can help explore an idea, gather relevant repository context, or work on a backlog issue. The quality of its contribution depends on how clearly the task is scoped and what context it can access. A proposed plan or issue response is a starting point for evaluation, not an approved specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesImplementation
For an assigned change, an agent may edit multiple files, refactor code, or apply repository instructions such as linting conventions. It might work locally or in a hosted environment, depending on the product. Actions such as installing dependencies or running commands can require developer authorization. Before delegating, define the intended change and the boundaries of what the agent may read, modify, or execute.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Testing
Testing can be part of the agent workflow. GitHub’s lifecycle example shows an agent connected to Playwright for browser testing, with the developer authorizing browser actions and reviewing the result. GitHub also documents Agentic Workflows for repository automation that checks whether changes have adequate tests; the documentation labels that feature public preview.
A passing test is evidence about the behavior the test exercised. It does not establish that untested cases work or that a change is correct in every relevant environment. Review test scope and results alongside the code.

Pull requests and review
An agent can prepare a pull request or provide an initial review. GitHub’s example includes a colleague reviewing and approving the change before merge. OpenAI’s engineering guidance similarly describes delegating initial review while leaving final review and the merge decision to engineers. The reviewer needs to understand the change’s implications, not merely accept an agent’s summary.
Security work
Teams can add security review or scanning to the workflow and use agents to help investigate or remediate vulnerabilities. These checks are additional safeguards, not proof that every defect will be found. Protect secrets, limit access, and keep review practices appropriate to the code and environment. The cited material does not establish that agents can replace a comprehensive security program.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
After release
A post-release issue can be assigned to an agent to propose an improvement and open a pull request. That gives teams another point at which to use an agent, while preserving the normal review and merge process.
What determines an agent’s role
Two coding agents with similar capabilities may behave differently in practice because of their execution environment, permissions, integrations, and oversight. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance notes that agent experiences can differ in execution environment and data flows. OpenAI describes technical boundaries, approvals for higher-risk actions, and telemetry as controls for deployment.

- Execution location and isolation: Establish whether the agent runs locally, in the cloud, or in a repository-hosted environment, and what code or data that environment can reach.
- Tool and command access: Decide what it can read, edit, run, or connect to, and which actions require approval.
- Workflow integration: Consider how it receives issues, creates branches and pull requests, interacts with continuous integration, and uses browser testing or security scanning.
- Verification and visibility: Check which tests and checks can run, how results are exposed, and where a human reviewer makes decisions.
- Governance: Look for policy controls, audit records, and telemetry that help the team understand agent actions.
These are practical comparison criteria, not a ranking of products. The cited vendor documentation describes particular workflows but does not provide a complete, independent product-by-product market comparison.

- Define a bounded task. State the desired outcome, relevant files or context, and limits on what the agent should change.
- Set permissions before execution. Restrict access to the tools, data, and commands needed for the task; require approval for higher-risk actions.
- Inspect the proposed changes. Review the diff and the agent’s explanation rather than treating a completed task or successful command as proof of correctness.
- Run and assess relevant checks. Examine test and security-check results, including what they cover and what remains untested.
- Keep a human decision point. Follow the team’s review and merge process, with a reviewer accountable for understanding the change.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available examples come mainly from official product documentation and vendor-authored engineering accounts. They show ways to integrate agents into development workflows, but they do not establish an independent, cross-industry estimate of effects on delivery speed, software quality, or total development cost.
Best Value
One OpenAI guide says developers spend 2–5 hours per week conducting code reviews. That is a figure reported by OpenAI’s guide, whose publication year is not established in the available source; it should not be read as a universal industry average. The number also does not demonstrate how much time agents save.
Feature availability can change. GitHub’s documentation labels Agentic Workflows and the cited third-party coding-agent feature public preview; check the relevant documentation for current status and eligibility before relying on either in a production workflow.
