If your PS5 won’t read a disc, won’t accept one, or holds a disc it won’t release, work through the checks in order: disc orientation and a second known-good disc first, then cleaning, then the official software steps. Only a fault that survives those checks points to hardware. A stuck disc needs its own careful procedure, because forcing it out is the wrong move.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
“Won’t read,” “won’t take a disc,” and “won’t eject” can have different causes, so start by identifying which one you have.

Check orientation and whether a disc is already inside
When the console stands vertically, PlayStation’s guidance is that the disc label faces left as the disc is inserted. Check how your console is standing, because a disc inserted the wrong way round will not seat correctly. Also confirm that no disc is already sitting in the drive, since a disc left inside will block a new one.
Test with a different disc
The fastest way to separate a disc problem from a console problem is to try a disc you know works.

- Use a clean, commercially pressed PS5 or PS4 game disc, a Blu-ray, or a DVD.
- Do not use a burned disc or an audio CD. PS5 consoles do not play either, so a failure with one of them tells you nothing about the drive.
- If a known-good disc reads normally, the original disc is the problem. Move to cleaning it.
- If every supported disc fails, the cause is more likely in the console, so move on to the software checks and then to repair.
Clean the disc properly
Fingerprints, dust, and smudges can stop a disc from reading. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the centre toward the edge rather than in circles, and avoid touching the reflective surface with your fingers. Then test the disc again.
Run the official software steps when discs insert but won’t read
If discs go in but the console still can’t read them, PlayStation’s official PS5 disc troubleshooting guide points to Safe Mode and a database rebuild. Clearing the cache and rebuilding the database does not remove your games or saved data, but it is still worth backing up saves to cloud storage or USB before you start.

- Start Safe Mode by pressing and holding the power button until you hear the second beep, then release it. Confirm the steps on PlayStation’s page if your console behaves differently.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database and let the process finish without interrupting it.
- Restart the console normally, then insert your known-good test disc again.
If the disc still isn’t read, PlayStation’s guide lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as the next step. This is a last software escalation. It deletes all information on the console, so back up anything you need before you run it, and only use it after the earlier steps have failed.
Handle a stuck disc without forcing it
Do not pull a stuck disc out by hand. PlayStation’s page states directly: “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” Use the manual removal procedure instead.

- Turn the console off, unplug it, and disconnect the cables and devices attached to it.
- Follow PlayStation’s screw-based manual removal directions, which call for a #1 Phillips screwdriver. Work only from those official steps.
- Do not turn the console on or play on it while its cover is off.
What may be causing the fault
iFixit’s PS5 disc drive troubleshooting page, last updated April 25, 2024, lists these possible causes:
- Incorrect insertion of the disc
- A disc already present in the drive
- A software glitch
- A dirty or damaged disc
- Debris inside the drive
- A malfunctioning ejection mechanism
This is a list of possibilities, not a diagnosis of your specific console. The checks above rule out most of these causes before you consider the drive itself.

Repair prices, warranty terms, and turnaround times vary by country and were not verified for this article, so check the official repair flow for your location before you send the console away.

iFixit publishes a PS5 Slim disc drive replacement guide. It covers replacing the drive in a PS5 Slim, including fitting a drive into a Slim console that has none, along with a matching console cover. The guide states that an internet connection is required to set up and pair the new drive.

That guide does not establish compatibility for the original PS5 or the PS5 Pro, so do not apply it to those models. Confirm both the console model and the part’s compatibility before you buy a drive, and do not assume a generic drive will work across systems.
