If your PS5 controller moves or aims when you are not touching the stick, first check whether it happens in one game or across the PS5 interface and other games. For a standard DualSense, Sony’s documented steps are to reset the controller, reconnect it by USB, update PS5 system software, then contact PlayStation Repairs if the issue persists. A game’s dead-zone setting may mask small inputs, but it does not repair a worn stick. DualSense Edge owners have additional dead-zone controls and a separately sold replacement stick module.
What stick drift is—and what a dead zone changes
Stick drift is unwanted analog input while a controller’s stick is untouched. In a game, that can look like a character walking, a camera turning, or an aim reticle moving on its own.

A dead zone is the range of stick movement a game or controller ignores before registering input. Increasing it can make small unintended inputs less noticeable, but it changes how input is interpreted; it does not establish that a faulty or worn stick sensor has been repaired. Dead-zone controls are game-specific on many titles, so the available setting and its name depend on the game.
Check whether the problem is limited to one game
- Try the controller in another game and in the PS5 interface.
- If drift appears only in one game, open that game’s controller or input settings and look for a dead-zone or stick-sensitivity option. Adjust it in small increments and check whether normal aiming or movement still feels responsive.
- If the unwanted input appears across games or in the console interface, treat it as a controller-level problem and follow Sony’s troubleshooting steps.
This comparison is a practical way to narrow down where the symptom appears, not a definitive diagnostic test published by Sony.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Reset a standard DualSense controller
Sony’s reset procedure for the standard DualSense is:
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the controller from the official USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller, beside the Sony logo. Use a pin or similar tool to press the button inside for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the included official USB cable, then press the PS button.

Update the PS5 system software if drift remains
If resetting does not resolve the problem and the console is operable, install the latest available PS5 system software. Sony recommends this after the reset step when controller problems continue. If the stick still registers unwanted movement, use the analog-stick issue option in PlayStation support or go to PlayStation Repairs.

Set a profile’s dead zone or stick sensitivity
DualSense Edge custom profiles support stick sensitivity and dead-zone settings. These controls affect how the controller responds; Sony does not describe them as a repair for underlying stick hardware. The feature is specific to Edge profiles and is not a documented calibration menu for the standard DualSense. Sony’s DualSense Edge personalization instructions explain the profile controls.

Replace an Edge stick module
Sony documents a replaceable stick-module option for DualSense Edge: the module is sold separately, and the left and right modules are interchangeable. This is an Edge-specific replacement path, not evidence that an Edge module fits a standard DualSense. The Edge manual advises discharging static by touching a grounded metal object and avoiding contact with the module and controller connectors while handling the module. Consult the DualSense Edge instruction manual before replacing one.
When to seek repair or consider replacement
- For a standard DualSense: If drift persists after reset and the system-software update, use PlayStation Repairs or contact PlayStation support. Sony’s standard-controller guidance does not document a user-replaceable stick module.
- For a DualSense Edge: If settings do not address the symptom, the separately sold Edge stick module is an official hardware replacement option.
- Before paying for service or buying another controller: Check warranty eligibility for your controller’s version and your country, then compare the available service cost with replacement cost. No universal repair price or cost comparison is established here.
Warranty terms vary by region and product version. The cited CFI-ZCT2W manual states a one-year limited warranty for the original purchaser in the United States and Canada for defects in material or workmanship, subject to proof of purchase and other terms. Check the warranty documentation that applies to your controller and country rather than assuming that period applies worldwide.

What not to assume
Sony’s cited standard DualSense troubleshooting guidance does not document a general calibration menu, and its Edge dead-zone settings are not presented as a hardware fix. The official material cited here also does not establish that compressed air, contact cleaner, opening the controller, or a third-party calibration tool will fix drift. Avoid treating any of those approaches as a guaranteed repair.
