PocketBook Verse Pro vs Kindle: Formats, Libby Access, and Reading Features

The Verse Pro offers broad format support and direct Libby access on firmware 6.10 or later. Kindle suits Amazon-centered reading, with Libby delivery in the U.S. only.

Choose the PocketBook Verse Pro if you want broad support for books from different sources and direct Libby access on the reader; its firmware update added PocketBook x Libby in March 2026. Choose a Kindle if you mainly buy books through Amazon or want to send personal documents through Amazon’s delivery service. Kindle’s Libby delivery is available in the United States only. Because “Kindle” covers multiple models, screen, storage, waterproofing, and audio comparisons depend on the exact Kindle you have in mind.

At a glance: which reader fits your books?

What matters most PocketBook Verse Pro Amazon Kindle
EPUB and mixed-format files Lists EPUB, PDF, AZW/AZW3, MOBI, comics, and other formats, including some DRM-protected formats. Protected titles may require account authorization. EPUB and several other file types can be sent as personal documents through Send to Kindle. This is a transfer workflow, not the same as buying a Kindle Store book.
Public-library borrowing PocketBook x Libby is available on Verse Pro with firmware 6.10 or higher; library participation and card eligibility still apply. Libby can deliver most eligible loans to Kindle ereaders in the United States. Availability outside the U.S. is not established by Libby’s Kindle guidance.
Audio and accessibility PocketBook lists audiobook playback, Bluetooth, text-to-speech, and firmware-added screen reader and display settings. Features vary by Kindle model, file type, and content source; verify the specific model and Amazon’s feature documentation.
Hardware baseline The named Verse Pro has a 6-inch, 300-dpi grayscale screen, 16 GB storage, and IPX8 water protection, according to PocketBook. There is no single Kindle hardware specification; compare against the exact model.

Formats and getting books onto the device

PocketBook: broad listed file support

PocketBook lists the Verse Pro as opening ACSM, AZW, AZW3, CBR, CBZ, CHM, DJVU, DOC, DOCX, EPUB, FB2, FB2.ZIP, HTML and related web formats, MOBI, PDF, PRC, RTF, and TXT. EPUB and PDF are listed with and without DRM. PocketBook documents transfer by USB or PocketBook Cloud. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every protected title will open without authorization.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For hard-DRM books, PocketBook says Adobe Digital Editions and an Adobe ID may be required. The account or authorization attached to a book can therefore matter as much as its file extension. See PocketBook’s ebook and audiobook FAQ for its transfer and DRM guidance.

Kindle: distinguish Send to Kindle from Kindle Store books

Amazon lists EPUB, PDF, DOC/DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM/HTML, and several image types for Send to Kindle. An EPUB sent this way is handled as a personal document for delivery; that does not establish that it behaves exactly like a Kindle Store purchase in every reading, annotation, or library-management feature. Amazon’s USB transfer instructions can differ by device generation.

Amazon’s personal-document guidance also shows that notes and highlights support depends on file type and device. File acceptance alone does not mean feature parity with a Kindle-format book. Check Amazon’s Send to Kindle file guidance and its personal-document notes and highlights help for the applicable workflow.

Library access: Verse Pro now has direct Libby support

PocketBook Verse Pro

PocketBook firmware 6.10.3425, dated March 24, 2026, adds the PocketBook x Libby app to the Verse Pro. PocketBook’s release notes describe searching for libraries, signing in with a library card, borrowing, placing holds, managing or returning loans, and reading borrowed ebooks offline in the built-in reader. Library audiobooks can be listened to online. OverDrive says PocketBook x Libby works on PocketBooks running firmware 6.10 or later.

Check that the library you use appears in Libby and that your card can access its catalog. Direct integration does not override a library’s membership, lending, or title-availability rules. See PocketBook’s firmware 6.10 release notes and OverDrive’s PocketBook support page.

Kindle

Libby says, “You can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader (available in the U.S. only).” In the U.S. flow, select “Read With…” and Kindle in Libby, then complete the loan through Amazon. This geographic restriction matters: do not assume that a library outside the United States can send Libby loans to a Kindle. Confirm the steps and availability with your library and Libby’s Kindle help.

Annotations and notes

PocketBook’s FAQ describes highlighting, underlining, comments, and handwritten notes for EPUB and PDF, with synchronization through PocketBook Cloud. Amazon documents notes and highlights support by personal-document file type and device, so compare the specific formats and Kindle model you plan to use rather than assuming one platform handles every imported book alike.

How to decide

  • Choose Verse Pro if your collection includes EPUB and varied file formats, you want to transfer books by USB or PocketBook Cloud, or direct Libby access on the reader matters to you.
  • Choose Kindle if your reading is centered on Amazon purchases and account delivery, or if Send to Kindle suits your personal-document workflow.
  • For library borrowing, check your library’s catalog, card eligibility, and geography: Verse Pro needs firmware 6.10 or higher for PocketBook x Libby, while Libby’s Kindle delivery guidance is U.S.-only.
  • For hardware, audio, or accessibility comparisons, identify the exact Kindle model and compare its documented features with the Verse Pro rather than treating all Kindles as one device.
