PS5 AI upscaling and AMD FSR are related, but they are not the same feature. Sony’s Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is a new option for selected games on the standard PS5; PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a separate technology family that games can use on PC and other platforms. Sony says upgraded PSSR and FSR 4 grew out of work with AMD, but that relationship does not make them interchangeable or guarantee the same result in every game.
For players, the practical difference depends on the console or platform, the game and its version, and the graphics mode—not just the upscaler’s name.

What is different between PS5 upscaling and AMD FSR?
| Technology | Where players may encounter it | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Selected games on standard PS5 | Sony describes it as a streamlined neural-network upscaling tier designed around PS5 performance constraints. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles using the library. Sony’s QSSR announcement |
| PSSR | Supported games on PS5 Pro | Sony’s AI-upscaling library for PS5 Pro. Sony announced an upgraded version in February 2026, with Resident Evil Requiem as its first title at that time. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement |
| AMD FSR | Games on PC and other platforms, depending on each game | A distinct AMD technology family. IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses FSR 3.1.5 on platforms outside PS5 Pro, while the PS5 Pro version uses upgraded PSSR by default at launch. IO Interactive’s game-specific description |
The relationship between PSSR and FSR is collaboration, not identity. Sony says upgraded PSSR and AMD FSR 4 stem from Project Amethyst work with AMD. That establishes a shared development relationship; it does not establish that the products are the same, that all FSR versions are equivalent to PSSR, or that they produce identical images.
Does the regular PS5 have PSSR?
No. Sony distinguishes QSSR, announced for selected standard PS5 games, from PSSR, its upscaler for PS5 Pro. QSSR is not simply another name for PSSR, and neither label means every game on that console uses the feature. Sony’s announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles; support should be checked for the specific game and version.

Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined neural network tailored to the standard console. Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in the studio’s game context. That is a developer comment about its implementation, not an independent comparison against PSSR or FSR.
For PS5 Pro, Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel during upscaling. Sony’s 2025 technical teardown also explains that the Pro’s system-on-chip handles AI-enhanced resolution. The Pro and standard PS5 are distinct hardware models, but the presence of PSSR still depends on a supported game. Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown
What does upscaling change when you play?
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower resolution. Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU workload, which may give a game more room to target a higher frame rate or spend resources elsewhere. The trade-off is that reconstructed detail can look soft or unstable; fine edges and textures may shimmer or flicker, particularly in motion. Outcomes depend on the upscaler, the game’s implementation and the selected graphics mode.

Ubisoft’s explanation for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro illustrates the idea: its Technology Director Pierre Fortin described PSSR taking a lower-resolution image such as 1080p and upscaling it to 2160p, approximating three out of four pixels. This is an example from that game’s explanation, not a universal input and output resolution for QSSR, PSSR or FSR.
Some games use dynamic resolution scaling, changing the internal render resolution in response to GPU demand. This means a mode’s actual input resolution may vary rather than staying at one fixed figure. The output resolution shown on a display alone does not tell you the resolution at which the game rendered each frame.
How does support vary by game?
Support is title- and platform-specific. A game may use one upscaler on PS5 Pro and another on PC or other platforms, or offer different options across graphics modes. Announcements and developer descriptions provide examples, but they do not establish a complete compatibility list for every game.

- Standard PS5: Sony’s October 2026 QSSR announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first supported titles.
- PS5 Pro: Sony’s February 2026 announcement said Resident Evil Requiem was the first title for upgraded PSSR at that time. IO Interactive later said upgraded PSSR is the default upscaler on PS5 Pro for 007 First Light at launch.
- Other platforms: IO Interactive says players of 007 First Light on platforms outside PS5 Pro continue to benefit from FSR 3.1.5. This describes that game’s implementation, not a rule for every platform or title.
Before comparing screenshots or performance, check the game’s platform build, patch, and graphics option. If the developer publishes details, also look for internal render resolution, output resolution, dynamic-resolution behavior, and the target frame rate. A Quality, Balanced or Performance mode can change the comparison as much as the upscaler does.

Is QSSR, PSSR or FSR better?
There is no established universal winner in the cited announcements and developer commentary. The available examples describe different games, hardware and implementations, rather than testing all three technologies side by side under matching conditions.
Ubisoft said that in its evaluation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, PSSR was more stable overall than TAA, and explained how resolution scaling supports the game’s performance and image-quality choices. IO Interactive reports that upgraded PSSR in 007 First Light gives cleaner detail, less shimmer and flicker, and better temporal stability in its implementation. Those are useful developer observations, but neither demonstrates that PSSR is better than FSR or QSSR across games.
For an informed player comparison, prioritize evidence from the exact game and mode you intend to use. Look for comparable captures or testing on the same platform build, with matching settings and frame-rate targets. Without those controls, a sharper-looking image or smoother frame rate may reflect a different resolution or graphics mode rather than a general advantage of one upscaler.
Quick Recap
What should players check before choosing a graphics mode?
- Confirm the platform and game support. Check the game’s official feature details or patch notes for QSSR, PSSR or the specific FSR version. Console ownership alone does not guarantee that every title offers a particular upscaler.
- Identify the graphics mode. Note whether you are comparing Quality, Balanced or Performance, and whether the game exposes a separate resolution or frame-rate option.
- Check what resolution figures mean. Distinguish internal render resolution from output resolution, and see whether dynamic resolution scaling can change the input from scene to scene.
- Judge motion as well as still images. Inspect fine detail, edges and moving foliage or textures for shimmer, flicker and instability, alongside clarity and frame-rate behavior.
- Keep comparisons like-for-like. Match the game version, platform, graphics settings and target frame rate before treating a visual or performance difference as evidence about the upscaler.
