For better privacy, audit app permissions and review location, account activity, lock-screen notifications, and diagnostics separately. These changes involve trade-offs—such as delayed notifications or fewer location-based features—and Google does not give a universal runtime gain for any one setting. Menu names and availability vary by Pixel model and Android version; if a path differs, search for the setting in the Settings app.
Which battery settings should you change first?
Start with settings that limit unnecessary background or display use while preserving the phone’s core functions. Google says Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are on by default and recommends keeping them enabled. Adaptive Battery learns from recent app use and restricts less-used apps when they are not in use. This can reduce background activity, but Google notes that extending battery life may reduce performance or delay notifications. Check an app’s battery use before restricting it
For an app that appears to be draining power, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → App battery usage and review its background use and optimization. Turning optimization off can let an app run more in the background and use more battery, so avoid doing this broadly. If a notification-dependent app seems delayed, check its individual battery setting rather than disabling optimization for every app.
Reduce screen power use
Lower brightness, use Dark theme if you prefer it, turn off Always-on Display or live wallpapers if you do not need them, and shorten screen timeout. Google gives 30 seconds as an example timeout. Adaptive brightness can adjust brightness automatically. On supported Pixel models, Smooth Display raises the refresh rate for some content and uses more battery; turning it off trades some motion smoothness for lower display demand. Turn off connectivity features you are not using
Turn off tethering or a hotspot when no device needs it. Google recommends Adaptive Connectivity on Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Fold; some US carriers may limit its availability. Battery Saver can help when charge is low, but it turns off most location uses and most automatic syncing, so features may stop working as expected or information may refresh less often. Manually turning off location or account syncing can also degrade features that rely on them. Google’s Battery Saver guidance describes these trade-offs.
How should you investigate unexpected battery drain?
Check battery use by app before switching off broad system features. Some extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If unusual drain continues beyond a few days, investigate the apps and settings involved; Google documents battery diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later. Which privacy settings are worth reviewing?
Audit permissions app by app
Privacy Dashboard shows which apps recently accessed permissions, while Permission Manager lets you review access by permission type. A common route is Settings → Privacy → Privacy dashboard or Settings → Privacy → Permission manager; use Settings search if the labels or paths differ. For location, camera, and microphone, choose the access level an app needs—options documented by Google can include all the time, while using the app, ask every time, or no access. On Android 11 and later, unused-app settings can pause app activity and permissions. Review Google’s app-permission instructions and Pixel security and privacy settings.
Choose location and location history separately
Device Location controls whether apps and services with permission can access the phone’s location. Turning it off can disable location-dependent features, and Google notes some local results and ads may still use your IP address. Location Accuracy can combine wireless signals and sensors to estimate location more accurately. These controls are distinct from Google Account Activity controls and Timeline, so review each according to the features you use. Google says Timeline is off by default; when enabled, precise device location may be regularly saved to the device even when Google apps are not in use. See Google’s Pixel location settings guidance.

Check what appears on the lock screen and what is shared with Google
Pixel privacy settings also include camera and microphone access controls, lock-screen notification visibility, clipboard-access notices, and Ads and advertising ID controls. Decide whether notification content should be visible while the phone is locked, and review advertising controls separately from app permissions. Usage & diagnostics is intended to provide Google with information to improve products and services; turning it off does not affect information that apps themselves may collect. That switch is not a control over third-party app data collection. Google explains it in Usage & diagnostics settings.
