What each PS Plus tier gives you
Essential: multiplayer and monthly games
Essential is the core paid membership. It includes online multiplayer for games that require PS Plus, monthly games, member discounts, Share Play, cloud storage and exclusive content. Sony says you can add monthly games to your library and play them while your membership is active. Sony’s plan details Sony’s PS Plus overview
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Extra: Essential benefits plus a changing game library
Extra includes everything in Essential, along with the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Sony describes the Game Catalog as a collection of hundreds of games, but it is access to a service library—not ownership of every included title. Games can leave the catalog, so check availability and any removal date before planning around a particular game. Sony’s plan details Sony’s PS Plus overview
Sony says that starting in January 2026, PS4 games will be added to the service only intermittently. Don’t choose Extra on the assumption that new PS4 catalog additions will arrive on a steady schedule. Sony’s US plan details
Premium: classics, trials and streaming
Premium includes the lower tiers’ benefits, then adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Sony’s US plan page also lists the Sony Pictures Catalog. These are the reasons to consider Premium over Extra; if you only want the Game Catalog, Extra already includes it. Sony’s US plan comparison
Rank #2
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Is PS Plus Extra worth the extra cost?
Extra costs $55 more per year than Essential at the US annual prices Sony displayed on October 5, 2026. To judge whether that premium is worthwhile, compare it with the cost of games you would otherwise buy—and with how much time you realistically have to play catalog titles.
- List the specific Game Catalog games you expect to play, rather than counting the full catalog as value by itself.
- Estimate what you would actually spend on those games without the subscription.
- Check whether the games are currently included and whether Sony shows a removal date.
- Consider how many you can finish while subscribed. A title leaving the catalog may no longer be playable through the service.
Extra makes the most sense when you are actively choosing and playing multiple included games. It is not automatically a saving: the $55 annual premium only pays off against purchases you would genuinely have made.
What does Premium add over Extra?
At the US annual prices shown by Sony on October 5, 2026, Premium costs $25 more per year than Extra. That price difference buys access to benefits Extra does not include: the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and, on Sony’s US page, the Sony Pictures Catalog. Sony’s US plan comparison
Rank #3
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Choose Premium if one or more of those features has a concrete use for you. If your priority is simply playing the Game Catalog, Extra already provides it; don’t pay the added $25 just for the Premium label.

Monthly games and catalog games work differently. Sony says monthly games can be added to your library and played while your membership is active. Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles are available only through the corresponding plan, and some have end dates when they leave the service. If a catalog game leaves—or your membership ends—you lose access to that game through PS Plus. Associated DLC and add-ons also become unavailable until you resubscribe or buy the game. Sony’s PS Plus FAQ
Sony says most catalog titles can be downloaded, but classic PS3 games are streaming-only. Check a game’s listing for its access method and availability rather than assuming every title can be downloaded. Sony’s PS Plus FAQ

Is Premium cloud streaming right for you?
Sony lists cloud streaming for PS4, PS5 and PC, and says select games can stream to PS5 or PlayStation Portal. It does not mean every catalog game is streamable on every device. Sony’s plan details specify a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p; the FAQ also says high-speed internet of at least 5 Mbps is required and notes that some games may not be streamable. Classic PS3 games are streaming-only. Sony’s cloud-streaming details and FAQ
- Confirm cloud streaming is available in your region; Sony’s US page excludes overseas territories from this benefit.
- Check Sony’s eligible-game finder for the specific game and device you want to use.
- Make sure your connection meets the stated minimums; actual streaming suitability also depends on your connection and the supported game and device.
- Do not treat PlayStation Portal as a requirement for Premium. It is an optional device, and Sony says only select games can stream to it.
Can you change PS Plus tiers later?
Sony says an upgrade to a higher tier can start immediately, with a prorated payment for the remaining paid period. A downgrade takes effect after your next payment date. Review the amount and timing shown in your account before confirming a change. Sony’s PS Plus FAQ
Which PS Plus tier should you choose?
- Choose Essential if online multiplayer, monthly games and member benefits cover what you need, and you prefer to buy games separately.
- Choose Extra if you plan to play specific Game Catalog titles and expect their value to justify the higher subscription cost, while allowing for games to leave.
- Choose Premium if you will use its Classics Catalog, trials or cloud streaming enough to justify the additional cost over Extra.
