Protractor reached end of life in August 2023. Its project recommends that existing users migrate and discourages new adoption. Angular CLI currently documents Cypress, Nightwatch, WebdriverIO, Playwright, and Puppeteer as E2E integration options; the right choice depends on your migration needs, waiting model, and project-specific browser and CI requirements—not on a proven universal performance winner.
Why Angular teams are moving on from Protractor
The Protractor project states that it reached end of life in August 2023 and recommends migration. That means it is not a sensible choice for new Angular E2E suites, and existing teams should plan a supported replacement rather than treating it as an actively maintained long-term option. Angular’s maintainers described two connected problems in their deprecation discussion: Protractor’s Control Flow had become increasingly mismatched with JavaScript’s async/await, and maintaining a runner coupled to Angular carried ongoing costs. Protractor’s waitForAngular behavior—waiting for Angular application stability—could be useful, but it also tied the tool to that framework. The maintainers favored migration toward framework-agnostic platforms. Angular’s Protractor deprecation discussion
Which alternatives does Angular CLI document?
Angular CLI’s E2E page currently documents setup paths for five integrations. The commands below add the corresponding package or schematic; they do not mean that Angular CLI itself is a built-in E2E runner. Angular CLI: End-to-End Testing
| Option | Angular CLI setup command | Protractor migration material |
|---|---|---|
| Cypress | ng add @cypress/schematic |
Dedicated guide: Cypress migration from Protractor |
| Nightwatch | ng add @nightwatch/schematics |
A Protractor-specific migration guide is not established by the cited Angular setup page. |
| WebdriverIO | ng add @wdio/schematics |

| Playwright | ng add playwright-ng-schematics |

| Puppeteer | ng add @puppeteer/ng-schematics |

Angular says a preferred runner can also be integrated manually if it is not listed. In this package-based setup, ng e2e invokes the project’s configured E2E target; it does not select one framework on its own. The Angular roadmap also names Puppeteer among alternatives. Angular roadmap
How to choose a replacement
Start with migration support
If a Protractor-specific migration guide will help your team translate an existing suite, Cypress and Playwright are the two choices here with dedicated official guides. Cypress’s guide includes a transition example and notes that Protractor stopped being included in new Angular projects starting with Angular 12. Treat either guide as a starting point, not a promise of drop-in compatibility: review the APIs and verify that the rewritten tests preserve the behavior your application needs.
Check how tests wait for the application
Inventory tests that rely on Protractor’s Angular stability waiting, especially around asynchronous UI changes. Playwright describes its Test auto-waiting as the closest conceptual counterpart to waitForAngular, but that does not guarantee identical behavior for every application. Validate the candidate against the way your app renders, loads data, and signals readiness. Playwright’s migration guide

Decide how much framework coupling you want
If the same E2E suite should test more than Angular applications, a framework-agnostic runner may fit your architecture better. That consideration aligns with the rationale Angular’s maintainers gave for moving away from a framework-coupled runner; it does not mean Angular-aware waiting is inherently undesirable.
Verify your actual browser and CI requirements
Before committing, check each tool’s current official documentation for the browsers, operating systems, CI environment, and workflows your project must support. Angular’s integration list establishes setup options, not a browser-coverage or performance ranking. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark that identifies one universally best replacement.
How to migrate without a drop-in assumption
- Record the current suite’s intent. List critical user journeys, selectors, setup and teardown behavior, and cases that depend on Angular stability waits.
- Select a candidate against those needs. Use Angular CLI’s documented integrations as a starting point, and inspect the Cypress or Playwright migration guide if either is under consideration.
- Add and configure the integration. Run its Angular CLI
ng addcommand where applicable, then confirm the project has the expected E2E target. For an unlisted tool, follow that tool’s current setup instructions and configure the target manually. - Port a representative test first. Include a test with asynchronous rendering and one important user flow. Compare what it asserts and when it considers the page ready; do not merely translate method names.
- Run the converted test in the project’s real CI context. Fix environment and timing assumptions before migrating the full suite, then port and review the remaining tests in groups.
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate need is to capture a page screenshot rather than run an interactive E2E suite, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server—not a Protractor replacement or a test runner. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI agents and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Angular CLI’s `ng e2e` run one specific testing framework by default?
No. It runs the E2E target configured for the project; the selected package supplies the integration.
Best Value
Is Playwright’s auto-waiting exactly the same as Protractor’s `waitForAngular`?
No. Playwright calls it the closest conceptual counterpart, not identical behavior across all applications.
