Choose based on whether your PDF is part of an application journey or a file you want to compare; do not assume every Eyes SDK exposes the same PDF API.
Choose the PDF testing route that fits your workflow
Visual regression testing compares a current capture with an approved baseline. It helps identify visual changes in documents such as invoices, statements, contracts, and reports. Applitools describes PDF checks as useful for examining details such as dense tables, footnotes, and wrapped legal text, where a layout shift may matter. These are product-described use cases, not a guarantee that every document issue will be detected.

| Route | Best fit | What it supports, according to Applitools |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes PDF batch job | Teams checking PDF files against visual baselines in a batch workflow. | PDF batch checks in Eyes. Confirm the current setup and API for your selected SDK; a universal SDK-specific PDF code sample is not established in the cited materials. Applitools PDF testing |
| Autonomous custom flow | PDFs that are part of a test flow, or tests needing document-oriented actions as well as visual comparison. | Open a PDF as the flow’s start URL or navigate to one mid-flow; use page navigation and text assertions. Applitools also describes fillable-form support and uploaded PDFs referenced from a test step. PDF testing capabilities and Applitools’ July 27, 2026 announcement. |
| ImageTester CLI | Collections of standalone PDFs or other document files that you want to process outside an application test flow. | The Applitools-maintained repository describes a command-line tool for images, PDFs, Office files, and more, including single-file and directory-tree use. Follow the repository for current installation and command syntax. ImageTester repository |
For a feature that must be tested through a user journey—such as generating a PDF after completing a form—start by checking whether Autonomous custom flows suit that journey. For standalone documents, consider the Eyes batch route or ImageTester. If you are writing code against an Eyes SDK, use its current documentation rather than assuming that the PDF workflow shown for another route is available in your framework. The SDK selector lists a PDFs/Images category but does not establish one shared PDF API across SDKs.
How the Eyes baseline cycle works
In the general Eyes visual-testing workflow, a test captures checkpoints and compares them with stored baselines. The first run can establish a baseline; later runs report visual differences for review. The test system includes the test suite, Eyes SDK, application driver, Eyes server, and Test Manager; the server performs the comparison and the Test Manager is where results and baselines are reviewed. See Applitools’ system overview and visual testing overview.

- Comments for each day of the week
- Log Book Dimensions L=4.25" x W=3.12" x H=0.12"
- Contains 5 book
- Run the test to establish or capture a checkpoint. Treat an initial result as a candidate reference, not proof that the document is correct.
- Review later comparisons. Inspect the changed page and region, then decide whether the difference is an intended document update or a regression.
- Approve only expected changes. Save the updated baseline when the new appearance is correct. Keep the previous baseline when the change is a defect and fix the document generator or application instead.
This describes the general Eyes baseline lifecycle. The precise commands and setup for a PDF depend on the route and SDK you use.
Make PDF comparisons meaningful
- Stabilize inputs where possible. Use consistent test data and generation settings so that the comparison focuses on meaningful document changes.
- Identify dynamic content. Dates, account details, transaction values, and other variable fields can create expected differences. Decide how your workflow should handle them before approving a changed result.
- Inspect the exact page and region. Check whether a difference affects reading order, table alignment, footnotes, or text wrapping, rather than approving a result based only on a summary.
- Separate data changes from layout changes. A new balance may be expected while an overlapping label is not. Review the content and its visual presentation as distinct concerns.
- Keep baseline approval deliberate. A broad batch of changes should not be accepted without examining the documents that changed.
Use the current instructions for your SDK or CLI
Applitools’ SDK chooser is the starting point for finding documentation for a specific Eyes integration. Its Java Selenium quickstart covers a web-test setup; it is not a universal prerequisite list or a PDF-specific implementation guide.

For standalone files, use the current instructions in the ImageTester repository. An older Applitools PDF tutorial can provide background, but confirm its commands and dependencies against the maintained tool or current SDK documentation before adopting them.
Common problems and how to address them
- You cannot find a PDF API in your SDK. PDF handling is not shown as one identical API across all Eyes SDKs. Check the docs for the exact framework and version, or use an explicitly documented Autonomous or ImageTester workflow.
- A comparison flags content that changes on every run. Make test data deterministic if possible, and identify variable fields before reviewing differences. Do not approve changes automatically just to clear the result.
- A visual difference looks minor in a summary. Open the changed page and inspect the relevant region. Small shifts can affect dense tables, footnotes, or wrapped text.
- You need a PDF as part of an application journey. Check whether an Autonomous custom flow can open it at the start or navigate to it mid-flow, rather than treating the file as a standalone batch input.
- You need to process a directory of documents. Check the current ImageTester repository instructions for directory-tree usage; do not rely on command syntax copied from an older tutorial.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a PDF visual-testing or baseline-review replacement. It can be useful when your input is a web page that you need to capture as an image, for example before or alongside a document workflow. A single GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; the example below captures a web page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Does the Eyes Java Selenium quickstart show how to test a PDF?
No. It is a quickstart for a Java Selenium web test. Use the documentation for the specific PDF route and SDK you plan to use.
Rank #4
Can ScreenshotNeo replace Applitools Eyes for PDF regression testing?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages as images or PDFs; the described service does not provide Eyes-style visual baselines and review for PDF regression testing.
