Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo make your WhatsApp account harder to take over, enable two-step verification and add a recovery email, check linked devices for unfamiliar sessions, and never share your registration code or verification credential. If someone has already taken control, re-register your phone number; these preventive settings do not remove an intruder from an account you can no longer access.
1. Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email
Two-step verification adds an authentication step after your phone number is registered. WhatsApp says this feature is optional and is upgrading the existing six-digit PIN experience to a password for users as the rollout proceeds. Labels and steps may vary during that change.

In WhatsApp, open Settings (or Menu on some Android versions), then Account and Two-step verification. Follow the prompts to enable it, set the credential shown in your app, and add and verify an email address you control. The email can help with recovery if you forget the credential. See WhatsApp’s account security tips for its current guidance.
Choose a credential others cannot guess, and do not share it. This setting protects future access attempts; it cannot by itself eject someone who has already taken over your account.

2. Review linked devices and remove unfamiliar sessions
A linked device can use your account without being the phone holding your SIM. Check the list periodically, especially if you used WhatsApp Web or linked a computer you no longer use.
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- On iPhone, tap Settings and then Linked Devices. On Android, tap the three-dot menu and choose Linked devices.
- Review the listed devices. Select any session you do not recognize or no longer need, then choose Log out.
WhatsApp’s instructions for checking linked devices cover logging out of a device you do not recognize. Use the official WhatsApp app and avoid unofficial clients or websites; WhatsApp warns that unofficial versions can create security risks.

3. Keep registration credentials private
The six-digit registration code sent by SMS or phone call is used to activate or re-register your number. Never give it to anyone—not a friend, a stranger, or someone claiming to be WhatsApp support. Keep your two-step verification credential private as well. A request for the code may be an attempt to register your number on another device; do not hand it over.
WhatsApp’s registration and two-step verification guidance explains the role of the code and the additional verification. If you receive an unexpected code, do not share it. If someone asks you for it, contact that person through another trusted channel before assuming the request is genuine.

If someone has already taken over your account
Re-register your phone number in WhatsApp using the six-digit code sent by SMS or phone call. WhatsApp says entering the code logs out other devices using the account. If the app then asks for a two-step verification credential you do not know, you may have to wait seven days before you can sign in without it. Follow the recovery prompts rather than sharing a code with anyone.
Tell your contacts through another channel that your account may have been compromised, so they can ignore suspicious requests sent in your name. WhatsApp says messages already delivered to your device remain there and cannot be read by someone merely re-registering your account on another device. Re-registering does not, by itself, restore chat history from a backup; backup availability is separate. See WhatsApp’s compromised-account recovery guidance.
