Recommended Free Tools
prompts.chat is a free platform for browsing, sharing, and collecting AI prompts, built around the open-source collection formerly known as Awesome ChatGPT Prompts. Its tools extend beyond the website: project materials describe downloadable prompt data, a command-line interface, an MCP server, and a self-hosting option. The title’s 167,000-star figure should be treated as a snapshot, not a verified current count: the official homepage displayed 172k stars when accessed on October 7, 2026.
What is prompts.chat?
prompts.chat is the current web and repository experience associated with the Awesome ChatGPT Prompts collection. The official homepage presents it as a social platform for discovering and sharing prompts, while the repository documents ways to browse and reuse the collection in developer workflows. The project says the repository began on December 5, 2022, as a personal effort to organize prompts, and describes it as free and open source from the start. The project’s About page provides that history.

The title retains 167,000 stars, but that number is not independently verified as current. The official homepage displayed 172k GitHub stars when accessed on October 7, 2026; GitHub star totals can change, so either figure is best understood as a dated snapshot rather than a stable measure of quality or activity. The official homepage is the relevant place to check the live display.
How can you use prompts.chat prompts?
You can use the website to find prompts, or access the collection in formats and integrations intended for reuse. The repository README documents these options; availability and setup details can change with project updates. The official repository is the source for current instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Browse online: Find prompts on the hosted platform and collect or share them.
- Download data: The project lists
prompts.csvandPROMPTS.mdas reusable formats, and also points to a Hugging Face dataset. - Use developer integrations: The repository describes a CLI and an MCP server, with remote and local MCP setup examples for compatible tools.
- Deploy your own instance: Self-hosting gives you a private deployment, but means configuring and operating the application and its database.
An exported prompt is content to adapt, not a guarantee of a particular result. Check each prompt’s assumptions and instructions before using it with an AI tool, especially if you will share its output or rely on it for consequential decisions.
Hosted platform or self-hosted instance?
The practical choice is between using the hosted service with minimal setup or taking on deployment to gain more control over your instance. The project promotes self-hosting for private use, but its documentation does not establish that self-hosting is inherently more secure, more reliable, or less expensive.

What does self-hosting require?
The project’s self-hosting guide lists Node.js 24.x and PostgreSQL as prerequisites and recommends Neon as a hosted PostgreSQL option. Deployment also involves configuration, including authentication and environment variables; having the prerequisites alone does not complete setup. Follow the project’s current guide rather than relying on an old command or configuration example. Read the official self-hosting guide for the latest requirements and steps.

The repository distinguishes between the software and site-authored content, which it says use the MIT License, and prompt content and data, which it says use CC0 1.0 Universal. Those are different grants: check the applicable license for the specific code, file, or material you plan to reuse rather than assuming one license covers everything. The repository README identifies the project’s license split.
