“Remote control” in this 2018 molecular-machine demonstration meant chemical signalling, not a robot operated from a distance. Adding zinc(II) set off a sequence that transferred copper(I) ions between components, assembled a molecular rotor and switched on its catalytic activity. Removing zinc(II) reversed the sequence and switched the activity off.
What “remote control” means at the molecular scale
The system reported by Michael Schmittel and colleagues at the University of Siegen was an eight-component chemical network. Its components communicated through chemical changes in their surroundings: zinc(II) acted as the trigger, while copper(I) ions moved between molecular partners. No external mechanical control was involved.

The design joined two copper-loaded nanoswitches with a weakly coordinated precursor and a rotator molecule bearing two pyridyl terminals. The aim was to use the network’s chemical signals to assemble a functional molecular machine rather than operate a single, isolated device.

How zinc(II) assembles the catalytic rotor
-
Add zinc(II). The added ions trigger the nanoswitches to transfer copper(I) to the precursor.

-
Complete the rotor. Two copper(I) ions coordinate at phenanthroline sites on the precursor. This completes the catalytically active three-component nanorotor.
-
Allow rotor motion. A free end of the rotator can coordinate weakly at the copper sites and exchange between them, producing motion within the assembled structure.

Observe catalytic activity. In a model click reaction, the report found that copper ions catalysed the reaction only after the nanorotor had assembled.

How the system switches back off
In the reverse sequence, hexcyclen removes zinc(II). Copper(I) then returns to the nanoswitches as the rotor disassembles into a catalytically inactive ensemble. The reported sequence therefore links the chemical signal to both the machine’s assembly state and its catalytic function.

| State | Copper(I) arrangement | Reported click-reaction behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Assembled | Two copper(I) ions coordinate at the precursor’s phenanthroline sites. | The assembled rotor catalyses the model reaction. |
| Disassembled | Copper(I) returns to the nanoswitches. | The resulting ensemble is catalytically inactive. |
What the demonstration establishes—and what it does not
The model click reaction was evidence that catalytic activity depended on assembly. The Chemistry World report does not give a numerical reaction rate, yield or quantified cycle time, so the demonstration should not be read as a measured performance benchmark. It also does not establish a practical application or a commercial nanomachine.
Schmittel described the broader ambition as moving beyond isolated devices: “The time has come to soar above stand-alone molecular devices and to realise functions not in defined molecules but in complex networks, as ingeniously demonstrated in biological systems.”

Why building a chemical network was difficult
The components had to transfer ions selectively without interfering with one another. Schmittel summarized the communication challenge: “The larger the number of components, the more difficult interference-free communication is within the network,”. He also said the team had to harmonize ion-transfer timing with the catalytic reaction rate, and optimize the substrates and solvent mixture.
That complexity is central to the result: the rotor’s behavior depended on controlled interactions among multiple components, not simply on attaching a catalyst to a moving part.

Possible directions, not demonstrated applications
Matthieu Raynal, a supramolecular chemist at Sorbonne University, said: “This work nicely illustrates how self-assembly enables the formation of intricate, yet well-defined, functional molecular systems,”. He suggested that this kind of work could inform switchable catalysts or interconnected catalysts for cascade reactions. Those are prospective directions, not applications demonstrated by this report.
