Prolog did not disappear, but logic programming never became a default choice for general-purpose software. Its rules-and-queries model remains valuable for some kinds of reasoning; broad adoption also depends on practical factors such as integration, compatibility, support, scalability and developer familiarity. So “Why did Prolog die?” is a misleading question: the more accurate one is why a distinctive language stayed specialized.
Why logic programming never went mainstream
Prolog asks programmers to describe relationships and rules, then pose queries whose answers follow from them. That can make programs for symbolic reasoning feel direct: rather than spelling out every step of a procedure, a programmer expresses what is true and lets the language search for solutions.

The same model is not automatically a better fit for every application. General-purpose software often has to coordinate many concerns at once: data structures, user interfaces, external services, existing code and operational requirements. A language’s elegance for expressing rules does not by itself settle how easily a team can integrate, maintain, scale and support the resulting system.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJan Wielemaker, the author of SWI-Prolog, put the measurement problem succinctly in a 2012 historical account for the Association for Logic Programming: “It is hard to measure success.” Downloads and installations do not reliably show whether software is used in real systems. His account also treats the factors behind adoption as partly subjective and difficult to substantiate, so they are best read as informed practitioner interpretation—not as a controlled study that identifies one cause.

Why did Prolog die? It did not
“Death” suggests that the language and its implementations stopped being used. That is not the picture supported by the available sources. SWI-Prolog describes itself as used in education and as an application-development environment. That establishes continued activity for this implementation, but it does not reveal how many companies deploy Prolog or how large its industry footprint is.
There is no reliable, current, portfolio-wide count here of Prolog users, deployments, market share or decline. Search interest, downloads, textbook use and community activity would not substitute for that kind of adoption measure. The scholarly overview Fifty Years of Prolog and Beyond provides historical context, but it is not a current census of use.

Where Prolog’s model fits—and where adoption gets harder
Problems naturally expressed as rules and relationships
Learn Prolog Now! presents Prolog’s logic orientation and identifies application areas including computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, expert systems, molecular biology and the semantic web. These examples show where rule-based or relational reasoning can be a plausible fit; they do not establish how common Prolog is in any of those fields.
Whole-system needs beyond the language model
Commercial software choices are shaped by more than how neatly a language expresses a problem. Wielemaker’s retrospective names robustness, performance, scalability, functionality, compatibility, support and familiarity as relevant considerations. Those concerns can matter especially when a specialized language must connect to a larger system or be maintained by a team with limited experience in it.

That is a trade-off, not a verdict that Prolog cannot scale or integrate. SWI-Prolog’s own positioning includes programming in the large, rapid prototyping, component integration, embedded rule systems and education. These are claims about SWI-Prolog and its maintainers’ aims, not guarantees shared by every Prolog implementation or application.
Why speed alone does not explain Prolog’s niche
Performance is important, but a benchmark is not a complete adoption explanation. SWI-Prolog’s system-selection documentation cautions that standard benchmark results may miss factors that matter in large applications. A benchmark may say something about a particular workload; it does not settle compatibility with existing code, the quality of available interfaces, support needs or whether a team can maintain the system.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
There is no universal performance ranking in the available evidence. If Prolog is a candidate for a real project, assess the implementation against representative tasks and the project’s other requirements rather than inferring overall suitability from a single benchmark.

- Workload fit: Does the problem benefit from expressing rules, relationships or queries directly?
- Performance and scale: Does the chosen implementation handle representative tasks at the project’s expected size?
- Interoperability: Can it connect to the components, services and data the application needs?
- Compatibility: Does it work with the Prolog code and dialect conventions the project already depends on?
- Robustness and tools: Are error handling, development tools and operational needs suitable for the application?
- Support and familiarity: Can the team get the expertise and ongoing support needed to build and maintain it?
The answers vary by implementation and application. SWI-Prolog’s documentation makes the same broader point: system choice depends on requirements, and no standard benchmark captures every consideration important to a large application.
How to start learning Prolog
Learn Prolog Now! is an official learning resource for exploring the language and its logic-centered approach. It is useful for understanding the model and seeing examples of application domains, not for estimating the size of the Prolog market.
For a book-length route, Ivan Bratko’s Prolog Programming for Artificial Intelligence, fourth edition, covers the Prolog language and AI techniques. Google Books identifies the fourth edition as a 2011 publication; that bibliographic detail does not establish current seller availability.

What Prolog’s history actually shows
SWI-Prolog’s official implementation history says its development began in 1986 to support recursive interaction between Prolog and C. That project-history detail points to a practical concern alongside the language’s logic-based identity: implementation and integration matter. It should not be read as an adoption statistic or as a complete explanation of Prolog’s position.
The best-supported account is therefore not that one flaw killed Prolog. The language remains active in education and specialized application contexts, while its broader adoption is difficult to quantify. Its logic-centered model can be a strong fit for some problems; whether it becomes a practical choice for a larger system depends on the workload and the surrounding requirements.
