A transistor state change is a change in how the device is biased and conducts current. In a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) used as a switch, the key transition is between cutoff, the off condition, and saturation, the on condition. The power for the switched load comes from the circuit’s supply, not from the transistor’s control input.
What changes when a BJT switches?
A BJT has a control path from base to emitter and a load-current path from collector to emitter. In a switching circuit, a signal supplies base current to control whether current can flow through the load path. The base signal controls the transistor; the circuit supply provides the energy that the load uses.

When the transistor is at cutoff, collector current is negligible in a practical circuit, so the load path is effectively off. When the transistor is driven into saturation, it conducts strongly and allows the load to draw current from its supply. These are operating conditions created by the circuit’s bias, not permanent settings inside the device.

What are cutoff, saturation, and active mode?

A switch is often described as moving between cutoff and saturation, but those are not the only possible BJT conditions. Active mode lies between them and is useful when a circuit needs the transistor to regulate current, as in amplification. Does a transistor’s state equal a digital 0 or 1?
Not by itself. A transistor’s operating region describes its electrical behavior; a digital circuit’s 0 or 1 is assigned to a voltage level at a particular point in the circuit. Transistor states can help produce those output levels, but the relationship depends on the circuit arrangement. The output may not have the same polarity or voltage as the input signal.
For example, a BJT switching stage can use cutoff and saturation to create output voltages that a downstream digital circuit interprets as binary values. The logic convention belongs to the surrounding circuit, not to the transistor’s state alone. Why isn’t “on” a universal voltage threshold?
A transistor does not switch on at one fixed base-emitter voltage in every circuit. Whether a BJT reaches cutoff, active mode, or saturation depends on its bias, the device, and the circuit’s operating conditions. Values such as an illustrative silicon base-emitter voltage or a particular saturation voltage describe examples, not universal definitions.

Does this definition apply to every transistor?
No. Cutoff, active mode, and saturation are the operating-region terms relevant to the BJT explanation here. Other transistor families have their own operating terminology and behavior, so these definitions should not be assumed to describe every transistor type.
