Progressive Web Apps vs. Native Apps: Which Should You Build in 2026?

A PWA can deliver web reach, installation, and offline features; native apps offer platform-specific integration. Choose by testing the capabilities your product requires.

Choose a progressive web app (PWA) when people should reach your product through a web link and its required features work reliably in their browsers. Choose a native app when the experience depends on platform-specific capabilities that the web cannot provide consistently. Neither option wins in every case: compare the actual tasks and features your product needs on the devices your audience uses.

What is the difference between a PWA and a native app?

A PWA is a web application enhanced with capabilities such as installation and offline operation. It remains a web app: installing it can add a launcher icon and open it in a standalone window, but does not turn it into software built specifically for an operating system. A native app is built for a particular platform or device class, typically using that platform’s SDK. MDN explains the distinction; web.dev describes PWAs as combining web reach with app capabilities, saying, “A Progressive Web App includes features from both worlds.”

The labels alone do not settle questions such as offline use, notifications, or distribution. Those depend on implementation and platform support. A PWA can also be distributed through selected app-store routes, so choosing a PWA does not necessarily mean giving up every store listing.

How do PWAs and native apps compare?

Decision area PWA Native app
How users reach it A web URL is a natural entry point; people can follow a link or find the product through the web. Typically built for a particular operating system or device class.
Installation and discovery Installability and experience vary by browser and operating system. Some store distribution routes are possible. Commonly distributed through the platform vendor’s app store.
Offline use Possible when the app is designed to cache the necessary assets and handle needed data offline. Depends on implementation; the approach alone does not guarantee offline behavior.
Notifications and background behavior Depends on browser and operating-system support. Apple documents web push for eligible Home Screen web apps on iOS 16.4 or later. Platform SDKs can provide native notification options and broader system integration.
Platform integration Uses web APIs, whose availability and behavior vary by browser and operating system. Can use platform SDKs for operating-system-specific features.
Development and operations A shared web delivery path can serve multiple platforms, but browser differences still need testing and feature adaptation. Development targets platform SDKs. The sources do not establish a general cost or staffing advantage for either approach.

These are architectural tendencies, not guarantees. Confirm that each must-have feature works on the specific browser and operating-system versions your audience uses.

When should you build a PWA?

A PWA is a strong fit when link-based access and web reach are central to the product, and its essential tasks can be delivered consistently in supported browsers. It can be especially suitable when a user should be able to open the product from a URL before deciding whether to install it.

  • Users should be able to arrive through a link or web search.
  • The primary experience works in the target browsers without relying on unavailable platform features.
  • Installation is useful, but a platform-specific app is not essential to the product’s core task.
  • Offline access is needed for specific tasks that you can support with deliberate caching and data handling.

Installation is not identical everywhere. Supporting browsers commonly use a Web App Manifest and related metadata, but criteria and the resulting experience vary by browser and operating system. web.dev’s installation guidance details this browser-dependent behavior.

Plan offline behavior rather than assuming it

A PWA does not automatically work offline. Identify the screens, assets, and data users need without a connection; implement suitable caching and local data handling; and decide how changes will synchronize after connectivity returns. Service workers can support offline and background operation, but the app’s design determines what remains usable. See MDN’s guide to offline and background operation.

When should you build a native app?

Choose native when a core task depends on platform SDK features or deeper operating-system integration that target browsers cannot provide consistently. Start with a concrete capability list rather than assuming that every app-like feature requires native development.

  • The product needs a particular platform-specific capability or system extension.
  • Its core experience depends on native widgets or a specific form of notification behavior.
  • Testing shows that the browser-based implementation cannot meet a required feature or user need.

For example, Apple’s iOS overview describes native capabilities including widgets and notification options. That establishes examples of platform integration, not a blanket claim that every native app is better suited to every task.

Can a PWA replace a native app?

Sometimes, if the PWA supports the product’s essential tasks on the browsers and operating systems its users actually use. Treat replacement as a feature-by-feature decision: list required capabilities, test them on target platforms, and identify any gaps that would block the main experience. A launcher icon or standalone window alone does not demonstrate that a PWA has native-app capabilities.

Web push on Apple devices

Older blanket claims that iOS PWAs cannot send push notifications are no longer accurate. Apple documents web push for Home Screen web apps on iOS 16.4 or later, and for Safari webpages on macOS 13 or later. Implementation requires a user permission gesture, a server-side subscription, and a service worker to receive and display notifications. Apple also says Safari does not support invisible push notifications: the site should present a notification after receiving a push. These requirements enable web push; they do not make it identical to native notification APIs. See Apple’s web push documentation.

What about using both?

A mixed approach can start with a web or PWA experience for the primary task, then add native apps where a specific platform or capability justifies them. This treats distribution and architecture as separate decisions: the web can remain an entry point even if some users also need a native app. Base the added work on demonstrated user needs and capability gaps, not on an assumed cost or speed advantage; the available documentation does not establish a general comparison of development costs or timelines.

How to make the decision

  1. List the essential tasks. Separate must-have user actions from conveniences such as an install icon.
  2. Map required capabilities. Note offline needs, notification behavior, widgets, system extensions, and any other platform integration the core experience requires.
  3. Check target platforms. Verify feature support and installation behavior in the browsers and operating-system versions your audience uses.
  4. Prototype and test the critical path. Test the main task, offline scenarios if applicable, and any required notification or system integration.
  5. Choose the simplest architecture that meets the requirements. Use a PWA when web reach and supported browser capabilities are sufficient; add or choose native apps when a demonstrated requirement calls for platform-specific access.

Primary platform documentation describes capabilities, not a controlled PWA-versus-native comparison. It does not establish universal differences in cost, performance, adoption, retention, conversion, or development time. Avoid choosing on the basis of a general savings or speed claim without evidence for the specific product and audience.
