Start by identifying which Google MCP implementation Claude Code is using. A remote Google API endpoint, Google’s local gcloud-mcp server, and a third-party Google-services server can have different transports and authentication flows. The right fix depends on which one you configured—and whether the failure occurs at startup, connection, tool discovery, or tool invocation.
Identify which Google MCP server you configured
Check the server’s name, the service it targets, its configuration scope, and whether its entry uses a remote URL or a local launch command. Those details determine which troubleshooting branch applies.

| Implementation | How it is configured | Authentication to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Google API MCP endpoint | A remote HTTP endpoint, such as a Cloud SQL MCP URL | For the endpoint pattern documented by GoogleCloudPlatform, check bearer-token authentication, Application Default Credentials (ADC), API scope, IAM permissions, and any required quota-project header. |
Google gcloud-mcp |
A local stdio server launched with a command; the Google repository documents an npx pattern using an @google-cloud package. |
Follow the local server’s setup and the Google Cloud credentials it requires. Do not assume a remote endpoint’s HTTP or OAuth behavior applies. |
| Third-party Google-services server | Depends on that project; it may run locally and use its own OAuth client. | Use that server’s instructions for redirect URIs, consent-screen settings, test users, and stored tokens. |
Google’s EvalBench documentation describes authentication for Google API MCP endpoints. The Google gcloud-mcp repository documents a separate local server. A third-party project’s setup is specific to that implementation; for example, see the robcerda Google MCP server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck where the failure happens
A server can start and connect, and Claude Code can discover its tools, without a later tool call being authorized. Identify the last successful stage before changing credentials or configuration.

- Startup failure: The local process may not launch. Check the command, package, and environment variables; errors such as
Failed to spawnbelong to this stage. - Connection or configuration failure: Check the configured URL or command, transport, headers, and server definition. Claude Code may report
Invalid MCP configurationfor a malformed setup. - Discovery succeeds but invocation fails: For the documented Google API endpoint pattern, treat tool listing and tool calls as separate authentication checks. A call may fail with
401 Unauthorizedeven after initialization and tool discovery succeed.
Inspect Claude Code’s MCP status and configuration
-
Run
/mcpin Claude Code orclaude mcp listin a terminal. Check whether the server loaded, whether it connected, and any status details or error text Claude Code reports. -
Review the server’s configuration: URL or launch command, transport, scope, environment variables, and headers. Confirm that values are present and free of accidental leading or trailing whitespace.

Check for missing environment variables, duplicate server names defined at different scopes, or a reserved server name that conflicts with Claude Code’s configuration.

If the status includes an HTTP code or server error, use it to locate the failing stage. A server-reported HTTP error during a tool call points to a different problem than a process that cannot start.

Configuration and status behavior can change between Claude Code versions. Consult the Claude Code MCP documentation for the version you use.
For a Google API endpoint, verify the tool-call credentials
Apply this branch only if you configured a remote Google API MCP endpoint with the bearer-token pattern described in GoogleCloudPlatform’s EvalBench documentation. A successful initialization or tools/list response does not establish that the identity can invoke a tool.

- ADC is available to the process. Check that the environment running Claude Code has valid Application Default Credentials, rather than assuming credentials available in another shell or application are also available there.
- The token has the required Google API scope. A valid credential without the endpoint’s required scope may still fail authorization.
- The principal has the endpoint’s required IAM permissions. Determine the service-specific role or permissions for the API and project. A Cloud SQL role mentioned in endpoint documentation is an example, not a universal requirement for all Google MCP endpoints.
- The quota project is supplied when required. Some endpoints need an
X-Goog-User-Projectheader. Whether it is required and which project value to use depend on the service and project setup.
Google’s EvalBench guidance describes these checks for its documented endpoints. Do not transfer its authentication assumptions to a local server or a third-party implementation without checking that server’s own requirements.
Understand the dynamic-client-registration error
If Claude Code displays Incompatible auth server: does not support dynamic client registration, that message may be a downstream symptom rather than the original cause. In the Google API endpoint scenario documented by GoogleCloudPlatform, a missing, invalid, expired, or wrong-kind bearer token can cause a tool call to return 401 Unauthorized. Claude Code may then attempt an OAuth registration flow that the endpoint does not support.

For that specific endpoint pattern, investigate the bearer token, ADC, scope, IAM permissions, and quota-project header before treating client registration as the root problem. The documented static bearer-token approach does not establish the correct authentication method for every Google MCP server.
Use OAuth remedies only for servers that use OAuth
If the server you identified uses an OAuth client, follow that project’s setup rather than applying the Google API endpoint checklist. Check that the configured redirect URI matches the OAuth client, the consent screen is configured for the account, any required test user is listed, and stored-token instructions have been followed.
These checks are implementation-specific. The robcerda server’s documentation describes OAuth and local process troubleshooting for that project only. Anthropic’s Claude Code plugin guide discusses general OAuth issues such as redirect URLs, scopes, token refresh, and authentication loops; it does not mean that a given Google API endpoint supports Claude Code’s interactive OAuth flow.
