But you cannot treat it as a Sling-free setup: AirTV’s setup guide uses the Sling app and directs people without an account to create a free one. In other words, the paid TV package is optional; the app and free account are part of AirTV Anywhere’s documented setup and viewing experience.
What “without Sling” means for AirTV Anywhere
AirTV says a Sling subscription is not required and that AirTV Anywhere has no monthly AirTV costs. Its FAQ puts the distinction plainly: “While Sling enhances your AirTV Anywhere experience, a Sling subscription is not required.” AirTV’s FAQ describes Sling as an enhancement, while its setup instructions still use the Sling app.

So if you mean “Can I avoid paying for Sling TV?” the answer is yes. If you mean “Can I set up and use AirTV Anywhere without the Sling app or a Sling account?” AirTV’s documented workflow does not support that interpretation: it tells users to sign in to the app and offers a free-account option for people who do not already have one.

AirTV lists four basic setup requirements: a mobile phone or tablet, broadband internet, an over-the-air (OTA) antenna, and power. Internet is necessary because AirTV Anywhere streams local channels to devices over the home network; it is not an internet-free way to watch those channels on connected devices. AirTV’s FAQ explains the requirements.

- Antenna: AirTV says any OTA antenna with a coax connection is compatible. Compatibility does not guarantee that a particular antenna location will receive every station you want.
- Broadband: Needed to stream local channels through the home network.
- Phone or tablet: Used for the documented setup process.
- Power: The AirTV Anywhere unit needs to be connected to power.
How to set up AirTV Anywhere without a paid Sling plan
- Install the Sling app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet.
- Sign in to a Sling account. If you do not have one, AirTV’s quick-start guide says you can create a free account.
- Connect AirTV Anywhere to power, broadband, and your coax-connected OTA antenna.
- In the Sling app, open Settings → Locals → Set Up AirTV, then follow the on-screen instructions. These are the steps in AirTV’s AirTV Anywhere Quick Start Guide.
The setup does not require subscribing to Sling’s paid TV package, but it does rely on the Sling app. AirTV lists Sling app support for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android mobile and TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. Check current app compatibility before relying on a particular device, since support can change. AirTV’s product page lists supported platforms.
What the built-in DVR can do
AirTV Anywhere includes a built-in 1 TB DVR and four OTA tuners, according to AirTV’s product specifications. AirTV says it can record up to four shows at once, or let you watch one live program while recording three others. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. AirTV documents recording and playback through the Sling app on compatible devices; a paid Sling subscription is not required for those local-channel DVR functions. AirTV support says the device must first be set up in the Sling app and that local-channel DVR use requires a compatible device. AirTV Support provides its support information.

Will it receive your local channels?
That depends on your location, antenna, and antenna placement. AirTV says local-channel availability varies by geography, and its general compatibility statement for coax-connected antennas does not establish which stations are receivable at a particular address. Check likely reception for your location before buying if you depend on specific channels; avoid assuming AirTV Anywhere will deliver a particular station simply because it has a tuner.

AirTV describes AirTV Anywhere as streaming local channels to compatible TVs and mobile devices over Wi-Fi. That network feature and the four tuners do not change the basic reception requirement: the antenna must be able to pick up the stations you want at your home. AirTV’s product page describes the device and its specifications.

If your goal is to avoid another monthly TV subscription while using an antenna for local channels, AirTV Anywhere fits AirTV’s stated model: the paid Sling plan is optional, and the unit has its own built-in DVR storage. If your requirement is to avoid the Sling app and account entirely, AirTV’s setup and viewing instructions do not establish a supported way to do that. The practical choice is therefore between accepting the free Sling app workflow or choosing a different OTA setup whose documented use does not depend on Sling.
