That initial price difference does not tell the whole system-cost story: the Technics includes a phono stage, while the other two do not.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the Rega for musical insight and precision
The Planar 3 RS Edition took the comparison’s winning vote for the sheer pleasure and insight of playing records. What Hi-Fi? highlights its dynamic nuance, rhythmic precision and ability to convey a recording’s character. The Technics is described as having more powerful bass, while the Rega sounds more articulate and precise to the reviewers.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the high-fidelity audio of vinyl
- Fully automatic belt-drive turntable operation with two speeds: 33-1/3, 45 RPM
- Anti-resonance, die-cast aluminum platter
- Redesigned tonearm base and headshell for improved tracking and reduced resonance
- Integral Dual Magnet phono cartridge with replaceable diamond stylus (ATN3600LC)
Its listed UK price is £1,099, and its package includes the external Neo Mk2 power supply. The Rega has no built-in phono stage, so you will need a separate phono stage or an amplifier with a suitable phono input.
Choose the Pro-Ject for the lower listed price and a spacious presentation
At £999 in the comparison, the Debut Reference 10 is the least expensive of these three at the listed UK prices. What Hi-Fi?’s reviewers describe it as clear, organised, authoritative and open, with good stability and musical energy, though relatively relaxed in character.

Its 10-inch carbon-fibre tonearm, acrylic platter, balanced-output option and support for 78 rpm are notable features. To play 78 rpm records, its individual review says the belt must be moved to a different position. Like the Rega, it has no built-in phono stage.
Choose the Technics for direct drive and convenient connections
The SL-1500CS combines direct drive and semi-automatic operation with a built-in phono stage. What Hi-Fi? characterises its sound as more powerful and muscular than the Rega’s, and its individual review awards it five stars for sound, build and features. The built-in stage can simplify connecting the turntable, but whether it suits your system depends on the rest of your audio equipment.

Check the rest of your system before buying
Compare the turntables by total system cost and compatibility, not just the price of the deck. In particular, establish how you will connect the turntable to your amplifier or speakers. The Technics has a built-in phono stage; the Pro-Ject and Rega require an external one or an amplifier with a suitable phono input. A built-in stage does not, by itself, mean the turntable can connect directly to every audio setup.
