Public videos are available to anyone and may appear in YouTube search, recommendations, and subscriber feeds. Private videos are limited to you and people you specifically invite. Unlisted videos can be watched by anyone with the link, who can also share it with others; they generally do not appear in search or on your channel’s Videos tab.
Private vs. public vs. unlisted: the differences
| Setting | Who can watch | How people find it | Comments | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone on YouTube | Appears on your channel and may appear in search, related videos, recommendations, and subscriber feeds. | Available. | Broad access and discovery. |
| Private | You and people you select for sharing. | Does not appear in public search or on your channel’s Videos tab. A URL alone does not grant general access. | Unavailable. | Sharing with a specifically selected audience. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link; viewers can reshare it. | Generally absent from search and your channel’s Videos tab, unless someone adds it to a public playlist. | Available; anyone with the link can see comments. | Link-based access without ordinary public discovery. |
YouTube’s official privacy-setting guide says public and unlisted videos can be shared by URL and added to a channel section or public playlist. Public videos may also appear in search, related videos, and recommendations. YouTube systems and human reviewers may review videos in all three visibility settings for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention, so private does not mean invisible to YouTube.

Which visibility setting should you choose?
Choose Public for an audience you want to reach
Set a video to Public when anyone should be able to watch it and you want it eligible for normal channel and platform discovery. Public is the appropriate option for an ordinary channel upload intended for viewers, subscribers, or searchers.

Choose Private for named viewers
Set a video to Private when only you and selected people should have access. In YouTube Studio, use the private-sharing flow and enter the invitees’ email addresses. Do not treat sending someone the video URL as a substitute: the URL does not make a private video generally viewable.

Choose Unlisted for link-based viewing
Unlisted is useful when viewers should be able to watch through a link without needing a Google Account, but the video should not ordinarily show up in search or on your channel’s Videos tab. It is not restricted access: anyone who receives the link can pass it on. Choose Unlisted rather than Private if you want comments on a video that is not publicly discoverable.
For any choice, decide based on who should have access, whether the link can be reshared, whether comments matter, and whether the video should appear on your channel or in subscriber feeds.

How to change a video’s visibility
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the video.
- Open Visibility, then choose Public, Private, or Unlisted.
- Save the change.
YouTube and YouTube Studio Android apps also offer visibility controls in their video-editing flows. Labels and steps can change, so consult YouTube’s current help instructions if the menu differs.
YouTube’s current help page says the default upload visibility is Private for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators aged 18 or older; everyone can change the setting. Defaults can change, so check the visibility field before publishing.

What happened to some older unlisted videos?
YouTube says that, starting July 23, 2021, it made older unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 private unless the owner opted out. The change applied to videos meeting both date conditions, not to every unlisted video. For an affected video, the old link no longer lets people watch or share it, and an embed may stop working.
YouTube’s older unlisted content guidance describes options to keep the video private, return it to legacy unlisted status, make it public, or reupload it as a new unlisted video. Reuploading creates a new URL and does not carry over the original video’s views or comments.

Can private or unlisted videos still be reviewed?
Yes. YouTube says videos in all three visibility categories may be reviewed by its systems and human reviewers for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention. Choose Private or Unlisted to control ordinary viewer access or discovery—not to prevent platform review.
Stream a video live instead of choosing a visibility setting
Visibility controls who can watch an uploaded video; they do not make it into a 24/7 live stream. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera.
