How to Livestream on YouTube: A Step-by-Step Guide

Check YouTube's live-streaming eligibility, choose mobile, webcam, encoder, or console, then create, test, and start your broadcast.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To livestream on YouTube, first confirm your channel is eligible, then choose the method that fits your broadcast: mobile for a quick phone update, webcam for a simple computer stream, encoder for gameplay or screen sharing, or a supported console for direct console streaming. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream, check the preview, and go live. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before your event.

1. Check whether your channel can livestream

YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance says the streamer must be at least 16, the channel must be verified, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions for your account before you plan a broadcast.

Mobile streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported phone or tablet. A channel that cannot stream from mobile may still be able to use another method if it meets the relevant requirements.

2. Choose how you want to stream

Method Best suited to What you need to know
Mobile Quick updates or vlogs from a phone or tablet Requires at least 50 subscribers and the other mobile eligibility conditions.
Webcam A straightforward computer broadcast using a camera You need a computer with a webcam. YouTube describes this as a direct way to go live from a computer.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video equipment Use streaming software or hardware and connect it to YouTube with the stream URL and key.
Console Streaming gameplay directly from a supported modern console Controls depend on the console; follow the console maker’s instructions.

You do not need to buy a webcam or microphone if your chosen method does not require one or you already have suitable equipment. YouTube says beginners can start with what they have rather than buying expensive equipment. For an encoder stream, external audio or video gear can be useful, but the right setup depends on what you are broadcasting.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

3. Create or schedule the livestream

  1. Sign in to YouTube and open YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Create, then Go live to open the Live Control Room.
  3. For an encoder broadcast, use the Stream tab to create a stream now, or open Manage to schedule one. A scheduled stream can have a shareable URL and let viewers set reminders.
  4. Set the title, audience, privacy, and other stream details. Review them before broadcasting. YouTube’s documented default privacy is private for creators aged 13–17 and public for adults; you can change the setting.

Mobile and webcam workflows use their respective options in the Live Control Room. The precise interface can vary by account or device, so use the current on-screen prompts if a label differs.

4. Connect an encoder (if you chose that method)

  1. In the Live Control Room, open the stream details and copy the stream URL and stream key.
  2. In your streaming encoder, paste the URL into its server or stream URL field, and the key into its stream key field. Field names vary by encoder.
  3. Start sending the feed from the encoder. Return to the Live Control Room and wait for the preview to appear.
  4. Check the preview and stream details. When you are ready to broadcast, select Go live in YouTube Studio.

The stream key is a credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room; update the encoder with the new key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection flow.

5. Test before the event and monitor the broadcast

YouTube recommends testing with an unlisted or public stream before an important event. For an encoder broadcast, configure everything in advance, start the encoder early, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check the stream page on your channel or watch page and on a mobile device, then make sure the audio and video look and sound right.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm viewers can open the stream page and that the title and privacy are correct.
  • Listen for clear audio and check the picture in the preview before going live.
  • While broadcasting, keep an eye on audio and video quality so you can respond if something changes.
  • Choose latency with the audience in mind: lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube warns it may increase playback buffering. For a presentation with little audience interaction, low latency may matter less.

6. End the stream and know what happens to the archive

When you have finished, select End Stream in YouTube Studio and stop sending the feed from your encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in the Studio Live tab. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Troubleshooting common livestream problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
Live streaming is not available yet First-time activation may still be processing, or the channel does not meet eligibility requirements. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check verification, age, and any restrictions in the previous 90 days.
Mobile streaming is unavailable The channel may not meet the 50-subscriber minimum or another mobile requirement. Check the mobile eligibility conditions. If eligible, try another supported method, such as webcam or encoder.
The encoder feed does not appear in the preview The encoder may not be sending a feed, or the stream URL or key may be incorrect. Confirm the encoder is running and that the URL and key match the values shown in the Live Control Room.
The stream key may have been exposed Someone else could use the credential to send a feed. Have an authorized channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, then replace it in the encoder.
Viewers experience buffering Lower latency can increase playback buffering, according to YouTube. If immediate audience interaction is not essential, consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits the broadcast.

Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Streams that violate them may be removed or restricted. Requirements and interface details can change; YouTube’s current help pages are the best place to check account-specific eligibility before a scheduled event.
