Common Myths About Moving Video Workflows to the Cloud

Moving video workflows to the cloud does not require an all-at-once migration. Understand proxies, latency, costs, collaboration, and when hybrid production makes sense.

Moving video work to the cloud does not mean moving every file, application, and production task at once. A team might start with archive storage, use proxies for remote editing, run editing workstations in the cloud, or combine cloud services with local equipment. The right design depends on the footage, the people working on it, and the stages of production that need to be remote.

What “moving to the cloud” can mean

Cloud video workflows are a set of choices, not a single architecture. Separate the production stages before deciding what to move:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Archive: Store footage in cloud storage, potentially as a first step toward broader remote access. Storage tier matters because retrieval speed and access frequency can affect both cost and workflow.
  • Proxy-based collaboration: Create smaller editing copies for remote work while retaining camera originals for finishing. This can reduce the media editors need to transfer or access, but requires a reliable plan to relink or conform the finished edit to originals.
  • Cloud-hosted editing: Run editing applications on remote workstations and access them over a network. This avoids requiring every editor to keep all media locally, but depends on workstation performance, storage, and the connection between the editor and workstation.
  • Cloud-connected production: Combine cloud services with local production systems, storage, or live-video equipment. Some components may remain on premises.
  • Hybrid workflow: Keep selected media, processing, or infrastructure local while using cloud services for other stages. Hybrid is a valid design, not necessarily an incomplete migration.

AWS describes archive as a possible foundation for further remote workflows rather than a mandate to move everything in one step. Its guidance and case studies are vendor material, so examples show what particular deployments can do—not universal guarantees.

Myth: Everything has to move at once

Reality: Archive, proxy collaboration, and cloud workstations can be adopted separately. A team can put selected footage in cloud storage while keeping editing local, or test remote proxy editing before changing its finishing workflow. Staging the transition lets the team evaluate retrieval, collaboration, and costs using its actual projects before expanding the design.

Myth: Every editor needs the full-resolution camera originals in the cloud

Reality: Editors can often work from proxies—smaller, easier-to-access versions of camera media—then relink or conform the project to the originals for finishing. Adobe’s proxy workflow depicts that distinction: editorial work can use proxies, while the final work still needs a sound relationship to the camera files.

Plan the handoff from proxy to original

Before a project starts, decide how proxies will be created, named, and associated with originals. Preserve the metadata and folder or identifier conventions needed to reconnect the edit, and test a round trip: create a proxy, edit with it, then verify that the project can relink to the correct original. A proxy workflow reduces the media that must be available during remote editorial work; it does not remove the finishing and conforming step.

Myth: Cloud editing always requires proxies

Reality: Proxies are useful, but not mandatory in every deployment. AWS documents a feature-film workflow using cloud workstations to edit Blackmagic RAW 4K and 6K originals with high-performance SSD storage and no proxy creation. That case establishes that direct-original editing is possible in a particular setup. It does not establish that every codec, project, workstation, storage design, or network connection can do the same.

  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Choose based on the footage and workload: codec and resolution, how many clips must be accessed at once, storage performance, and the experience from each editor’s location. Test representative footage and applications before deciding to skip proxies.

Myth: Cloud editing feels the same from anywhere

Reality: Location and latency still matter. Editing involves frequent interaction with the workstation, so a technically powerful remote machine can still feel poor to use if the connection or distance adds noticeable delay. AWS describes low-latency workstation options and discusses placing latency-sensitive applications nearer users; its cited film workflow used an AWS Local Zone.

Test the actual working conditions

Run a representative project with the editors, locations, applications, and remote-display method the team expects to use. Evaluate responsiveness while scrubbing, playing, and performing ordinary editing tasks—not only whether a workstation launches or a file transfers. A successful test in one location is not proof that the same experience will hold for another.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Myth: Cloud is automatically cheaper

Reality: There is no universal savings figure supported for cloud video production. AWS identifies workstation runtime, transferred data, other service costs, and archive access-speed trade-offs as factors. A workstation that runs only during editing has a different cost pattern from one left running continuously; footage that is frequently retrieved has a different archive profile from material rarely accessed.

Build a workload-based comparison

Compare the full workflow rather than a storage rate alone. Include:

  • Storage volume, storage tier, and expected retrieval frequency.
  • Workstation capacity and how many hours each workstation will run.
  • Data transfer into and out of the cloud, including proxies, originals, exports, and review copies.
  • Other required services, application licensing, support, and operational effort.
  • The cost and impact of retaining any local infrastructure.

Estimate using a real project’s media volume, active editing schedule, number of users, and retrieval needs. Vendor savings claims are not a substitute for a comparison based on your own usage.

Myth: The cloud eliminates local infrastructure

Reality: Some production needs can remain local. AWS notes that baseband live-video processing or integration with local storage may require on-premises components. A hybrid design can keep latency-sensitive or existing production systems in place while moving archive or editorial workloads to cloud services.

Identify dependencies such as live SDI processing, local storage integrations, or equipment that must interact with the production floor. Decide deliberately which systems stay local and how they connect to the cloud workflow.

Myth: Shared cloud storage alone solves collaboration

Reality: Collaboration also needs project coordination, media management, access controls, and a clear proxy-to-original process. AWS describes proxy workflows that include bin-locking, auditing, and media asset management (MAM) features. Blackmagic Design describes collaborative Resolve projects and local, network, and cloud storage options. Shared files alone do not settle who can change a project, how conflicts are handled, or which media version is authoritative.

Define the collaboration rules

  • Agree who owns project organization and how concurrent edits are coordinated.
  • Set permissions and decide how changes and access are audited.
  • Establish naming, metadata, and version conventions for media and proxies.
  • Document who handles relinking, conforming, and final exports.

How to choose an approach for a project

Use the workflow requirements—not the label “cloud”—to compare options. Resolve these questions before committing to an architecture:

  1. What media is involved? Record resolution, codec, and format, and identify whether direct-original editing is a requirement or a proxy workflow is acceptable.
  2. How much must be accessible at once? Estimate simultaneous media access by editors and stages of work, not just total archive size.
  3. How will proxies and originals stay connected? Specify proxy creation, naming, metadata, relinking, and conform procedures.
  4. Where are users and workstations? Test latency from the locations editors will actually use, including the intended remote-display approach.
  5. What are the storage and retrieval patterns? Choose tiers based on access frequency and speed requirements, and account for data movement.
  6. What do the applications and collaboration features require? Check licensing, project coordination, media management, permissions, and auditing.
  7. What must remain local? Identify live SDI, local-storage, and other production dependencies that affect a hybrid design.
  8. What is the total cost and operating responsibility? Include storage, compute runtime, transfer, other services, licensing, support, and the work of running the system.
